Sorry you're having troubles with your room. I wish I could have offered more help but I'm not actually much of a tech wizard. I'm afraid that most of my skills are only considered marginal at best. I do wish that the Paltalk folks could invest more energy into creating better sound transmission capabilities. There is another service kind of like Paltalk that a friend from the East coast tried to get me involved with but once I established a connection I couldn't seem to stay connected. It would cut me off after only about a minute. That service had incredible sound! I was very excited to have found out about it after hearing how clear and clean the sound was, but as I said it had connectivitry issues.

Frank - how about a schedule or at least advanced warning, so we do not need to be on mudcat at the time you open it to know about it?

Paltalk is a chat site where you can register, log in and have live discussions using the same methods here or you may choose to hook up your mike and chat. It's broken down into various genres so you should be able to find what you're looking for. Some of our more industrious Catters have taken it a step farther by having folk sessions in the past. Frank, being one of those. Give it a go.
I found it a little to intimidating, myself but I'm a bit of a prude, sad to say.
Cheers!

Be warned ... Paltalk does have a tendency to try to take over your computer but, having said that, its a fascinating site.

We used to have a great "online folk club" on paltalk at one time but I think there were a few problems with some peoples computers and nutty is right, it does tend to want to take over your 'puter.

I'd go for it. But not organize. I much enjoyed the old sessions. Does Paltalk remain the best site?

I'd love to get back into it again. My last computer didn't like Paltalk for some reason. I'll try it out on the new one and see what happens.

Bugsy, last night, Night Owl and I were just talking about the old HearMe days and how much she appreciated you and Jon staying up with her into the wee hours (Mudcat time)singing to her, etc. It was such a wonderful time; and, later on Paltalk, though by then she wasn't able to get on.

She's about to get a new computer, so I know of at least two of us who'd be up for it, again. We used to start on Sunday afternoons (Rocky Mountain time) and that seemed a good time slot for most, though I don't know if that would be true today.

I checked to see if HearMe might've been resurrected. It looks as though it has been but only for business video-conferencing. Nothing like what we knew.

You're only an hour ahead of me but I'm really, really shy!
Could I just listen?

Subject: RE: Palltalk Room is Open for acoustic music
From: Susan of DT

Jim Lad - of course you can listen. I am shy also and I found that Hearme/Paltalk worked really well for me - when I cannot see the people listening it is much less intimidating. I would sing something there and then be ready to take it to a "live" audience at a song circle.

Linux was not happy with Platalk a while ago - and they wanted you to go WinXP - and those with Win98 SE are left out,

Actually Yahoo messenger has the ability to do the same thing - we even set up a Yahoo Group for those interested to talk directly - mentioned in some threads or other round here... about the time this thread was active in 2005.

28 May 07 - 11:43 PM (#2062807)
Subject: RE: Palltalk Room is Open for acoustic music
From: The Fooles Troupe

The Paltalk download page now shows that they have been hit by people who won't upgrade from Win98SE - they keep a link to version 9.1 for SE users - but I hope they have also fixed the 'inane download' problem - I got told that I needed a new version to connect - so it was downloaded & installed - then found that it would not work on 98E - so I said "#@&*##$"...

Still no obvious way to get there form Linux - which is this PC at a friend's place, as well as the one I am building up to take over from the Win98SE...

At least things like Yahoo Messenger and compatible systems work on Linux...

i hosted a "room" there for many months/several years.
this was usually on thursday nights..sometimes we would
be on their for so many hours that the sun would rise and
set in several time zones while we were there.
Frank from Toledo (francy) showed me how to do this
and many of us have spent countless hours singing and
playing to each other from all around the globe.

It was not compatible with MAC computers last time i checked.

i had a room called mudcat live acoustic jam.

the live rooms are the best, but beware you may find lots of
people on there just playing thier c.d's for each other...
or doing karioki (sp?)_ sing-alongs

you can use cameras on there to send a video image
but i never activated this feature in my rooms, as
the music that we hear is the main reason to join the room

and people often abuse the camera aspect for distracting activities.

I've noticed each time we decide to try it again we have to download a newer version. We used to use it with WIN98!:-)

I'd be interested in the yahoo thing, too, if it means easier access, etc. for more people.

Jim, you shy? With that voice?!:-)

More's the pity, my current computer problems make Paltalk impossible for me right now.

I got on yesterday, typed "hiya" at a couple of people, and in about a minute was unceremoniously dumped back on the Desktop. Tried it again, and there was the Desktop again.

I hope to get things straightened (make that fervently hope) out in a few days, because the glitches and bobbles are driving me crazy(er).

I'm hoping to hear a lot of you there within the next week or so.

I just downloaded paltalk and discovered that my original registration was still active, must be years since I was in there and not on this computer.

Good to see a lot of old friends up above here. We had some grand times then.

Must say the sound seems very good now, but then, yes, it was a while ago.

I hope I catch some of you in there again soon.

Oh, what the heck. I'll go in tonight and see how I go about getting my own room.... "Jim Lad Folk".
If I get it done, I'll need some help/advice with sound levels etc. since I have a new system that's never been tested.
The format... I'll play some albums or practice when it's open. We can chat like this or raise your hand if you want to sing or take over.
I'll get back to yous when I'm done.

If anyone else has a better idea or wants to go ahead with your own room, use this thread or start one to let us know when you're in.
Cheers!

From: Susan of DT

What time/time zone tonite Jim? Last I knew, they charged for commercial rooms with large capacity, but small rooms were free with a capacity of 12 or so people.

Jacko - good to hear from you again. I think it was the Hearme days when you would come and sing.

Whenever I go to Paltalk (rarely the last few years) it want me to download a new version and then I have to remember again how to get it out of my startup menu.

As was asked earlier - are there better sites than Paltalk now?

Do people want the thread title changed to "Paltalk Discussion" or something similar so we don't think the room is open anytime we see it? And then a new thread can be started when the room is open.

Sorry guys, I have to get Paltalk off this computer before it starts telling me what to do.
As for the mike problems.... too much fancy equipment that I don't know how to use. The Dollar Store mike works just fine.

"As for the mike problems.... too much fancy equipment that I don't know how to use"

All you need is a good sound feed... ooooo there's a song in that...

You can use those cheapie desktop PC mimost noise any greater distance than the head so you won't get instrument pickup very well.

You CAN use any complex system of mic and preamps to feed any mixed sound in - I have heard entire groups 'live' on paltalk - you just have to get the correct technical matching on the input.

You're right. I'm off to get an adapter for my good mikes. Skype is looking good though. Even if you don't use it for this, the overseas call rates are really cheap. We can probably save $30/month on our phone bill.

All those rooms we ever had are still there. There are 8 rooms with mudcat in the title: Mudcat Snug Bar, Mudcat Live, etc. They aren't open. One can become a membewr of these groups. What does that mean? Should we all join all these rooms?

yes i keep thnking that there IS a room open now/
i second that suggestion tha twe change the name of the thread
to "discussion" unless there IS and actual ROOM open..'

i did not kno wthere were 8 of them!
i jult thought there was "my" mudcat live acoustic jam
and francy's folkfolks.

i do not have time to open a room now, but if i do i will
put up a thread announcing it or maybe even plan a head a
few days and put out the call.

i can show you how to do it
or give you the code to the
room i started.

open mike - don't post the code here otherwise you'll get all sorts of "Gobshites" shanghaing the room. PM it to half a dozen Catters you trust and who have the time and commitment to run the room for a few hours each.

www.paltalk.com

download new version - go for advanced installation - the only question it asked was whether I wanted it to automatically open whenever you turn on the computer, so I said no. This eliminates its most annoying feature

do you remember your singon and password? and then it asked for a 4 digit code that I never remembered getting. But I corrected the email and asked them to resend it and have been able to get on.

finding the rooms is less than straight forward

you need to enable adult content to see some of the mudcat rooms. unless we get there at the right time they are all closed.

I just got back on after about a 3 year hiatus. Went very smoothly with this fairly new computer. I'd forgotten how much fun it was. It accepted my old sign-on of bigchuck3. I suppose the concert room I established still exists, but I have totally forgotten the log-on. I'll look for any mudcat rooms.

I used to open up the mudcat live acoustic jam every thursday night...
for hours and hours...I have not found much live music there lately..
lots of karioki....but look for music rooms that specialize in LIVE music and have some fun! I have not done this for a couple of years, but for several years i did this and loved the chance to interact with folkies from all over the world. If you see a thread announcing a room, go there and enjoy...and for those who open a room, if you can announce it a day ahead of time so folks can plan to join, you will get better attendance. I have had 15-25 people there at a time. if you "raise your hand" you can have a chance to play and sing....sometimes there is a magic combination of folks there and it is a joyful experience! I have been known to send my radio show over paltalk before we had streaming at the station...now that we no longer stream, perhaps i will experiment with this again..stay tuned for details...my next show will be celtic and irish music for st. pat's day...showtime Sunday, March 9, 2008

There is almost always a live room open 24x7.   Activate "adult" (rooms are rated R, G, etc...you need to enable "adult" to see the R rooms). Then expand "Live Music."

Some excellent players to look for: Blind Boink, Shooter Ciao, and others.

Paltalk is simple and fun. For the best sound, though, go to Second Life - but not for the technically squeamish...lol
