I have been collecting different recordings of the bothy song, 'The Scranky Black Farmer'and at the moment have six versions - does anyone know of any other available recorded versions of this particular song. the six i have already found are:
1 ewan maccoll
2 ian manuel
3 the gaugers
4 clives own band
5 ian f benzie
6 jock duncan
I would be overjoyed if anyone can help me futher with this one.
thank you,
rabbitblyth

Well, I don't know any others but can highly recommend No 4. This is on COB's 1970 album Spirit of Love which was remastered and issued on CD in 2001 (BGOCD534)

Thanks for this - I cannot seem to find any other versions either. Perhaps this answers my question in itself. by the way, COB's version of the Scranky Black Farmer is utterly astounding, I quite agree. In fact, it was Clive which got me onto this in the first place.
thanks.

I learned the song from the singing of the scots folk group "The Gaugers" who in my humble opinion sang the definitive version

Now, that's what's nice about the mudcat.

You never quite know who'll turn up

I like this song a lot - as my brother lived for a couple of years at Kennethmont (Kinethmont - as it sometimes appears in the lyrics) - which is just along the road from Leith hall.   I had half-known the song for years, and then when I went to visit my brother, and was driving through all these places named in the song, somehow it came vividly to life.

The Garioch, Clatt, and Rhynie, an a'

Regards

Steven

Hi there, I have been learning this song for the last while to the Ian Manuel tune which I suspect is a traditional one from Aberdeenshire, as many of his tunes are. I'll trawl through my copy of the Peter Hall Collection and see if I can find it..
I am also pretty sure that Jock Duncan sings it one of his CDs..

But a great song..

Andy

Hey Steven, how are you? Haven't seen you for ages..

Words and music are in "Ord's bothy songs and ballads of Aberdeen Banff & Moray, Angus and the Mearns" first printed 1930 and reprinted 10 years ago with a new introduction by Sandy Fenton.

True; but that isn't a recording, which is what was asked for.

Mind you, "rabbitblyth" (oh how I hate those stupid "internet handles"; why are people ashamed to use their real names?) would do well to look at printed sources as well, if he or she is genuinely interested in the song.

Digging this one up to check on the pronunciation of GARIOCH in the context of Scranky Black Farmer, having just been offered a glass of Glen Garioch and relealising that what I sing might be a bit off the mark...

So Garioch or Gee-ree??
