19 Apr 05 - 07:40 AM (#1465173) Subject: May Day BH Upton Anyone going? From: RobbieWilson I have seen one or two mention Upton in other threads and been surprised not to see more mention of it so close to a fairly popular festival. I have been thinking about coming back after a couple of years absence although Girvan is a big temptation despite the distance. Any thoughts |

Apart from me and Pat Spoons, Llantrisant are bringing Mick & Olly, Jeff Hankin, Malcolm Over-By-There, the wonderful Gwyn (he does Robert Service monologues like no other), and Mike Greenwood. I'm sure I've forgotten someone. Splott Man |

25 Apr 05 - 03:37 AM (#1469891) Subject: RE: Upton Anyone going? From: Splott Man Don't blame Ronnie, Leadfingers, that's all the Upton site has. Sorry Andy and Carole, and Tori, I knew there was someone else. And of corse Miskin Man will be there in his own right. The rest of you should watch out for Crane Drivers own songs about the Maritime life of the Swansea/Gower area, and Tori is a great young Cornish singer who we've adopted. |

See that thread for my plea for people who are crazy enough to sing and dance in the May at dawn (5.36am) on the Sunday under/on the bridge. Or who want to join in with some border morris at a more sensible hour (every eve at 6) Anyone welcome As EmmaB says - lots of stuff in the pubs (singing and music). If you don't like what's in one - just move onto another. Great. |

03 May 05 - 02:40 PM (#1477214) Subject: RE: Upton Anyone going? From: Crane Driver So - did we have fun? We certainly did. The combined Llantrisant and Maidenhead Folkclubs put on a wonderful afternoon in the Star, and there were some great song sessions in the Lion - and an impressive thunderstorm one night! And we survived our first caravan trip. Andrew & Carole |
03 May 05 - 03:02 PM (#1477234) Subject: RE: Upton Anyone going? From: Leadfingers Agreed Andrew - Llantrissant were nearly as good as US !! Lovely town , lovely people , AND some good beer !! I still dont think i owe Bob an apology though !! |
03 May 05 - 04:23 PM (#1477312) Subject: RE: Upton Anyone going? From: Herga Kitty And half-price lemonade for Catters (thanks, Sal)! I enjoyed the folk club and the Lion too. The thunder, lightning and torrential rain were in the small hours of May morning and contributed to my decision not to watch the dancing at dawn.... apologies to Sue the Borderer. I did watch the procession at noon though. Kitty |
03 May 05 - 04:28 PM (#1477316) Subject: RE: Upton Anyone going? From: Sue the Borderer You're forgiven Kitty! The dawn dancing was great, though I think we owe some people apologies for just how noisy the drum was. Great weekend. |

03 May 05 - 04:36 PM (#1477323) Subject: RE: Upton Anyone going? From: vectis Maidenhead and Llantrissant were nearly as good as Travelling Folk, Maghull and Wooden Horse. Dodging quickly away from the Admiral's right hook. :-))) Seriously though I enjoyed some really good sings over the weekend and quite a few cracking concerts. The procession was bigger than the past few years and excellent as always. Den was disappointed that the belly dancers weren't there though. I got up to greet the dawn on Mayday, said "hello" and promptly returned to bed. Like many I sat up watching that spectacular lightning over the hills until the wee small hours and couldn't wake up enough to go and watch the dancing - sorry Sue. Here's to next year... |
03 May 05 - 05:24 PM (#1477348) Subject: RE: Upton Anyone going? From: Emma B My apologies too Sue - In bed for 3.30 and set the alarm for 5am. Managed to switch it off before falling to sleep again but it went off at the same time the following morning too, must have been some kind of retribution! A great weekend; some amazing singing from all in the Gospel session |
03 May 05 - 05:51 PM (#1477372) Subject: RE: Upton Anyone going? From: the lemonade lady Well that was a good w/e. Congratulations to all concerned. Some of us have to go to work the next day. Hmmmph wish I didn't have to, I had no brain today. Have I never mentioned that Shellbacks and Mudcaters get half price lemonade? Well I'm mentioning it now. What were the best bits for me? The folk club on Friday night. MandoTim (wow tim what a gaf!) and Webfolk providing catering for me and my wonderful assistants, Rosie and Estie. Robin Laing of course (unfortunately I've caught your cold if you're reading this mate!) and the thunder storm. Thanks to everyone for keeping my daughter's phone topped up!!! No actually she does that, but somehow she has no money when it comes to the little things! Sal |
04 May 05 - 03:25 AM (#1477615) Subject: RE: Upton Anyone going? From: COINWOLF Many thanks to all the people who helped make the Upton Folk Festival a success this year. We appreciated very much all the people who volunteered to help our rather small committee to put on the event. (The perception is that we organise it all, in practice the volunteers are the ones who are special, and put their efforts and time in to ensure the event is successful. The biggest stars of the festival are our helpers! The campsite was left spotless, so a big thank you also to all the campers, we do need that field next year. No festival is incident free, but I have to say that this year had the lowest amount of incidents for us to worry about. Positive comments are welcome for next year. There are always things that we can do to improve the quality of what is on offer and provided. Many thanks for the lemonade Sal, it kept me going all weekend. Regards, Festival Cat |
04 May 05 - 10:40 AM (#1477861) Subject: RE: Upton Anyone going? From: JudeL Speaking of incidents has there been any more news on what is happening as regards that idiot who damaged the gate? |
04 May 05 - 03:45 PM (#1478108) Subject: RE: Upton Anyone going? From: COINWOLF I would take it as a great favour to the festival if the less was said about the gate the better. We would like to remember the festival by the incredible atmosphere generated by all our friends, and would not want to remember it by a minor "unlikely to re-occur" event. The dancing and singing were superb, the procession a riot of colour and magic. There was so much to savour, and become tantalised with the prospect of it all happening again next year. Regards, Festival Cat |
