03 May 05 - 05:14 PM (#1477341) Subject: RE: Happy 86th Birthday, Pete Seeger From: Deckman One of the telling experiences of the "lasting" Pete Seeger is an e-mail I received not two weeks ago. It's from a fella named Doug. I gave him guitar lessons when he was 14. He's now in his late 40's. He was very excited to send me a print out of the singing Pete did to the HUAC back in the early 50's. Time marches on, yet it's so good to realize that some profound benchmarks, such as Pete Seeger, are not lost today. I owe Pete a lot, and I've had the honor of telling him so to his face. 03 May 05 - 05:46 PM (#1477370) Subject: RE: Happy 86th Birthday, Pete Seeger From: open mike We should all take a lesson from Pete and make sure to include sing-alongs in all our performances. Audience involvement is great! And educational! He often teaches Spanish songs, and i always have come away from a Pete concert enriched and empowered!! I got an album last month from a fellow whose c.d. cover has a sign that says: "This Machine Kills Fascists" Is that a quote from Pete? or maybe Woody? |

He was a legend and I think I was able to stammer some words to him. I have NO idea what those words were. I have always admired him for his courage, honesty and dedication. He is a remarkable man, and music is so much the better for him being part of it. |

03 May 05 - 08:49 PM (#1477513) Subject: RE: Happy 86th Birthday, Pete Seeger From: open mike ands such a better sentiment to say "This Machine Surrounds Hate And Forces It To Surrender" than to say this: "This Machine Kills Fascists" I thought it was a mis-quote.. as one d.j. in this area used to say: send golden bombs of light and love!! |

03 May 05 - 10:31 PM (#1477559) Subject: RE: Happy 86th Birthday, Pete Seeger From: georgeward Pete's birthday, our good fortune. Frank is right. Each of us - whether we know it or not - owes him something. And the beauty of it is that each of us doesn't owe him the same thing. He sowed, and continues to sow, so many appleseeds. Modest guy, mostly. Uncomfortable with tributes often. But if you sow appleseeds, you'd best enjoy the eventual cider. Seeger cider (I'm still waiting for the Seeger Congress). Happy 86th, Pete. - George |
04 May 05 - 02:04 AM (#1477605) Subject: RE: Happy 86th Birthday, Pete Seeger From: Pauline L Years ago, I attended a concert given by Pete Seeger and friends in a predominantly African-American church in downtown Washington DC. He started by ambling onto the stage playing Ode to Joy on his banjo. He shared the stage with a woman who sang Gospel music and a small orchestra (about 20 musicians) who played Appalachian Spring in its original version, which Martha Graham had choreographed. His very last song was We Shall Overcome, the most moving performance of this song that I have ever heard. As he sang and the audience sang along, the musicians, one by one, put their instruments down and sang along, while tears ran down their faces. At the end of the song, I noticed something that had happened during the singing -- the people in the audience had stood up, joined hands, and lifted our linked hands overhead in the traditional gesture of solidarity. Happy birthday, Pete. I learned so much from you. Can someone give me a cite where I can find what Pete said or sang to HUAC? |

I've since replaced all my old scratchy tapes with bright new shiny CDs & bought a lot more, too. I've done the same with my Weavers & Woody Guthrie tapes, and have also acquired the Original Folkways Leadbelly/Pete/Woody CD, & some Pete & Arlo CDs, & the double CD'Where have all the flowers gone' happy birthday to a wonderful songwriter & all round great man. sandra |
