Pete is alive and well and full of ideas and ......well, still Pete.
Everybody in the field of folk music owes him something.

There's a sweet little piece with that title by Studs Terkel in the current issue of The Nation—it's on the Web here.

Sorry Frank—I would have replied to your message rather than start a new thread, but you posted it while I was writing mine.    —BK
Duplicate threads combined. Somehow, one message from the "Pete Seeger is 86" thread got lost in the process, because there were six, and now there are five. Sorry about that. It has been retrieved and posted below.

One of the telling experiences of the "lasting" Pete Seeger is an e-mail I received not two weeks ago. It's from a fella named Doug. I gave him guitar lessons when he was 14. He's now in his late 40's. He was very excited to send me a print out of the singing Pete did to the HUAC back in the early 50's.

Time marches on, yet it's so good to realize that some profound benchmarks, such as Pete Seeger, are not lost today.

I owe Pete a lot, and I've had the honor of telling him so to his face.

We should all take a lesson from Pete and make sure to include sing-alongs in all our performances. Audience involvement is great!
And educational! He often teaches Spanish songs, and i always
have come away from a Pete concert enriched and empowered!!

I got an album last month from a fellow whose c.d. cover has a
sign that says: "This Machine Kills Fascists" Is that a quote from Pete? or maybe Woody?

Woody had that written on his guitar.

Whereas Pete had (or has) printed around the head of his banjo: This Machine Surrounds Hate And Forces It To Surrender.

I met Pete once in my life at the Newport Folk Festival in 1967. He was a legend and I think I was able to stammer some words to him. I have NO idea what those words were.

I have always admired him for his courage, honesty and dedication. He is a remarkable man, and music is so much the better for him being part of it.

ands such a better sentiment to say
"This Machine Surrounds Hate And Forces It To Surrender"
than to say this: "This Machine Kills Fascists"
I thought it was a mis-quote..

as one d.j. in this area used to say:

send golden bombs of light and love!!

If you haven't, listen to Mr. Seeger's testimony before Congress during the McCarthy years. Courage, humor and a glowing example of greatness.
Happy Birthday.

Happy Birthday Pete, one of my long time heroes. I know Mr.Seeger posts here now and again, I just wanted to ask him what his opinions were on the state of America today, re - Dubya's reign (and I use the word advisedly) as President?

Pete's birthday, our good fortune.

Frank is right. Each of us - whether we know it or not - owes him something. And the beauty of it is that each of us doesn't owe him the same thing. He sowed, and continues to sow, so many appleseeds.

Modest guy, mostly. Uncomfortable with tributes often. But if you sow appleseeds, you'd best enjoy the eventual cider.

Seeger cider (I'm still waiting for the Seeger Congress).

Happy 86th, Pete.

Years ago, I attended a concert given by Pete Seeger and friends in a predominantly African-American church in downtown Washington DC. He started by ambling onto the stage playing Ode to Joy on his banjo. He shared the stage with a woman who sang Gospel music and a small orchestra (about 20 musicians) who played Appalachian Spring in its original version, which Martha Graham had choreographed. His very last song was We Shall Overcome, the most moving performance of this song that I have ever heard. As he sang and the audience sang along, the musicians, one by one, put their instruments down and sang along, while tears ran down their faces. At the end of the song, I noticed something that had happened during the singing -- the people in the audience had stood up, joined hands, and lifted our linked hands overhead in the traditional gesture of solidarity. Happy birthday, Pete. I learned so much from you.

Can someone give me a cite where I can find what Pete said or sang to HUAC?

Happy Birthday Pete!
As a Canadian viewing American politics from a safe distance, I have always been puzzled by the term "un American activities". What a wonderful gesture it would be if your president were to invite Pete to the White House to apologize for past injustice. Perhaps the time has come..............

Pete Seeger was one of the artists I listened to in the years between folk being Top 40 & discovering live folk in 1996. I've since replaced all my old scratchy tapes with bright new shiny CDs & bought a lot more, too.

I've done the same with my Weavers & Woody Guthrie tapes, and have also acquired the Original Folkways Leadbelly/Pete/Woody CD, & some Pete & Arlo CDs, & the double CD'Where have all the flowers gone'

happy birthday to a wonderful songwriter & all round great man.

Just like everyone else involved in the folk revival I owe a huge debt to Pete Seeger. Reading through these threads I find myself in complete agreement with Frankham and George Ward, and Guest Obie - you make a good point too. Burl.

President Clinton honored Pete Seeger a few years ago at a nationally televised ceremony that included folks like Arlo Guthrie and Bruce Springsteen saluting him.

I saw Pete last June at the Clearwater Revival. As he sang, on a beautiful summer afternoon, the audience as usual joined in. In the background, sailing up the river, was the Hudson River Sloop Clearwter. An awe inspiring moment.
Happy Birthday, Pete.

To Pete! ... In hopes that you are reading this thread. I don't know if you'll remember, but you wrote the last verse to "Oh Had I A Golden Thread" at our family house when you were in Seattle for a concert at the Moore theater. I'm guessing the year was 1957, or so. Sonny Terry and JC Burris were with you.

CHEERS and best wishes wishes for many continuing gatherings! Bob Nelson

Sorry to drift this thread, but it just seems that if not it would be a great birthday present.
