One degree of separation from Pete for most there! I knew most of the songs, but had not heard Bring Me a Rose before - very nice song. We went to the song circle on Saturday and they sang it over the phone to the recuperating song circle leader - very nice people in Portland. Does anyone have a source for the music? They may be such a songbook in this very room from which I type, or in my library upstairs. But I can't find the damn thing. He wrote the words for "Baby, The Rain Must Fall" with Elmer Bernstein and for some reason, Glen Yarborough, who made a hit of the song refused to perform it live. (Folk snobbery?) Ernie was one of the original members of People's Artists in New York along with Leon Bibb and Betty Sanders. Ernie is an important member of the folksong community. His progressive values interfered with his early career as was the case of Jay Gorney with Yip Harburg (Brother Can You Spare a Dime), so Lieberman became Sheldon. The controversial singers caught hell during the McCarthy era. (And McCarthy is back!) Ernie and I wrote a couple of songs for the market. I owe him a debt of gratitude for the placement of these minor hits with Peggy Lee and also the Drifters. I couldn't have done it without him. Ernie was on the cutting edge of pop music during the Seventies. Most of his material found it's way into the movies. You can Google him for details. Through Ernie, I had the privilege of working as a side man with Gerry Fried and Jerry Goldsmith. At the time, I was the resident "folkie". I hope Ernie is still writing even though the market has changed (dumbed down). "Bring Me A Rose" is a lovely song and I've encountered it through the years with various people who have loved it. I met Ernie through left-wing circles when I was a kid. He is always supportive, kind, intelligent and although we haven't spoken for many years, I think of him as a good friend fondly.
