Just confirmed!

Fifth Annual Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash
Round Robin Songfest

Sunday • July 10, 2005 • 7 to 9 PM
CB's 313 Gallery
313 Bowery
at the foot of Bleecker Street
New York City

Featuring...
MacDougal Street Rent Party: Joel Landy • Eric Levine • Anne Price • Steve Suffet • Gina Tlamsa

Plus... Jessica Feinbloom • Ethan Miller

Accompanied on bass by Carlos Vazquez

$5 cover lets you stay all night and hear other acts as well. What a bargain!

For information, please call (212) 677-0455.

Sad note: Punk palace CBGB's/Omfug and its acoustic/folk twin CB's 313 Gallery have lost their lease. Unless some miracle happens, they will have to vacate at the end of August. So this may be the very last time we appear at this venue.

Be there! You may not have another chance.

I can't believe CBGB's could be closing down! One of the most important spots in rock 'n' roll history (although the name, as I understand it, is an acronym for Country/BlueGrass/Blues)...

I was never there in its heyday, but I have visited a couple of times in recent years to see my young friends (i.e., friends of my kids) The Witnesses.

Yes, CB's had a number of "heydays" & did start with country. There have been number of generations who enjoyed its venues... It's very sad it won't be there much longer.
The Woody Guthrie concert has enjoyed it own popular longevity and I'm sure this last will be the best.

The Bottom Line was a Village bastion for music, but NYU owns the space and money was more important than music. So it closed.

Same thing with CBGBs. Follow the money.

BUT.... you can still follow the music July 10. It promises to be a great show. Last year I played Rod McDonald's "For the Good of America" into Woody's "Slipknot-Hangknot" and it rocked! This year... I'm working on something creative, I can't tell you what it is now.

One of these days I will memorize and perform Woody's "Mean Talking Blues". Lots of words!

See you at the show!

Folk City is long gone as well. Speakeasy is no more. Many of these legendary venues have been sold or closed.    I look at it as a church, it isn't the building that is important, it is the congregation.

By the way, I went to CBGB's a number of time in the mid-70's when groups like Talking Heads and Blondie were just local bands. It was a great spot filled with interesting people. It was perfect for the time.

Greetings:

CBGB's and CB's 313 Gallery are under the same ownership and are located side by side in the same building. Just look for the large throng of cool looking young people with tattoos and body piercings waiting to get in. That's CBGB's. We're next door!

Being that I playes at Both CBGB"S and CBGB"S Gallery I want to say that when Clubs go things are not the same.

But like Woody Guthrie the music keeps going on. This years Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash is a perfect example. It takes a certain kind of fanatisism to keep alive an old scraggly musician like Woody Guthrie or Ludwig Von Beetovin. But a bunch of (us) fanatics do do it. Then they call it 'culture'.

Greetings:

So who is the anonymous guest who refreshed this thread? I really don't know who you are, but thank you just the same!

Our new comer this year is Ethan Miller from the State of Maine. Ethan is one of about seven or eight young people who are part of an independent recording collective called Riot-Folk. The say their mission is "to make folk music a threat once again." From what I have seen and heard they are off to a good start!

Among our returning performers are Jessica Feinbloom, for whom this will be her first New York gig in a year. We will also have our intrepid bassist Carlos Vazquez back with us. Carlos is a hardcore rock-&-roller, but we've been able to lure him away into our folkie netherworld for this gig.

Remember the date and time: Sunday, July 10, 2005, 7 to 9 PM. Let's hope that the owners of CBGB's/Omfug and CB's 313 Gallery are able to cut a deal with the landlord. Otherwise this could be the last go-around.

Folkdoctor is right. This could be our last go around at CB's 313 Gallery, the acoustic twin of the famed CBGB's/Omfug punk rock palace. The lease is up at the end of August 2005, and the Bowery Residential Center, the not-for-profit homeless shelter which owns the property, wants a substantial rent increase in addition to some huge amount of back rent it claims CBGB's management owes.

If you haven't been to one of the Woody Guthrie Birthday Bashes before, try to make it to this one.

Many wonderful places filled with musical history have gone. It's so sad that CBGB's and CB's joins this list. Let's enjoy what we can. This concert in memory of Woody and a bit of those he most influenced has been a winner 4 years running. I think there will be a special energy and meaning for everyone who experiences this 5th and last tribute to Woody Guthrie at CB's. This night will rock! Not to be missed.

Hey Steve,

The Woody Guthrie Archives website has a listing of Woody Guthrie birthday events.

http://www.woodyguthrie.org/news.htm

Why don't you send them your info?

Dear Guest,

Thanks, but we already took care of that. Anna Canoni, Woody's granddaughter, added the Birthday Bash to that website soon after receiving our e-mail press release.

Heard a truly wonderful singer and guitar player at folk music weekend event. His name is Ethan Miller and he will be the special guest singer at Woody Guthrie Birday Bash. He's coming from Maine to do this show and he's really worth hearing. A new, young talent, I'm sure Ethan will be very much in demand. Probably is now.

As a 19-year-old guitarist, banjo-picker and singer, I say we need more folk clubs in New York.

Also: For those of you who have read both, whose biography of WG do you prefer, Ed Cray's or Joe Klein's?

Both Joe Klein's Woody Guthrie: a Life and Ed Cray's Rambling Man are important biographies, and anyone interested in Woody should read both. If you want to know where Woody was and what he was doing on a particular date, then Klein is the better source. If you want to know how Woody related to other people and you want to understand what made him tick, I suggest you read Cray.

I agree that reading both is a good idea. I read the Klein last summer and I'm about to finish the Cray. While I was reading it, I thought I would enjoy the Woody Guthrie: A Life better, Ed Cray seems to have a better handle, stylistically, on telling the later point of WG's life than the earlier days.

Hmmm, yall look to me like a bunch of bored executives out for a nights celebration over ripping off Joe Public with some stock scam!

Woody Guthrie may have in his weakest last days laid down and gotten walked on by the likes of Bob The Dollar Dillon, but ya know what, nobody today cares a sh1t about Bob while they still love the Woody thing, for example the kids in my local school sing 'This Land Belongs To You And Me' ever couple of days.

If you can't kick the right where it hurts most, then to make a buck you should not be using the good name of those who did/do.

It's hard to imagine ripping off Joe Public with a $5 cover charge. CB's 313 Gallery is one of the Big Apple's great bargains. I really hope that it doesn't close.

Hey this is for anyone interested. I wrote some new verses to old songs and so did Steve. That is because we are not just doing nostalgia here but updating some of these old songs.

That is the idea , dig up something out of the grave if need be and revive it. But I'm not a preacher I am a political activist and I am going to take aim at a number of things, including the White House this weekend at the the 5th annual Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash.

Also we are honering Frieda Zames the great disability rights activist who died recently. Her Husband Mr. Michael Imperiale will sing with us and we have a verse to a Woody song for Frieda. You'll see when you come!

Also there are lots of songs by Woody you never heard before, as well as old chesnuts you will delight in singing along with. Also some songs by Woodys friends.

To all who came last night...

THANK YOU!

The house was packed to capacity, and it appeared that everyone had a wonderful time, audience and performers alike.

And now some really hopeful news. It looks like there is a deal in the works that will allow CBGB's/Omfug and CB's 313 Gallery to stay in business. It's not finalized yet, and not details have been made public, but the odds of it happening are better than fifty-fifty.

In any event, the Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash will likely continue. We have scouted out an alternative venue in the same general vicinity of downtown New York, and if need be it should be available. But right now it looks like we'll be back at good old CB's 313 Gallery in 2006.

Let's hope so!
