I am trying to find the music (score) for "I Hear a Drum". It is a group of songs written for the Bicentennial and it turns out that my music teacher at the time got rid of the music/score.

I have only been able to find this information online:

"I Hear a Drum," by Ann Barton, Lynne Salisbury, and Connie Thomas, 1974 [a musical "celebration of the Bicentennial for a children's chorus"]

If anyone has more information (publisher, etc) I would appreciate it. I would love to locate the music.

Thanks!

Mary

I didn't word the above very well... I spoke with my music teacher who taught my class this group of songs and she recently did a clear out of her old music and seems to have gotten rid of it (bummer!)

If it would help, a few lines from the title song are:

I hear a drum/ calling all to come/ join the fight/ for the right/ to live in liberty.
No more tax on tea/ no more tyrrany/ if need be we will die to be free.
Leave your farm/ leave your store/ your wives and family/ for a brand new army of citizens are we.
Bring your musket/ your powderhorn/ your daring due(?) and come/ with your spirits high/ obey the call of the drum.

Thanks again.

Mary

Mary, I don't know the song, but I assume the bit on the last line would be "derring do"

When I was in the 6th grade I was in this play too, and had always wondered if I could find the songs. Whenever my friend and I get together we sing the songs. I put in the lyrics tonight and this forum came up. I was the narrator for the play, as well as in the choir, so I had to know every word of it. The play had an opening speech to it that I remember a lot of,..first time I ever heard the word diversity.

The 2nd verse goes
"when we hear the drum, we will quickly come/we will stand up and fight to live in liberty/
We'll obey the law/ not a tyrant's rule
nor his greed or his governor's cruel/
join the ranks every man/protect your house and home
for together we'll hang/or one by one we'll hang alone
bring your muskets, your powder horn
your derring do and come
with your spirits high obey the call of the drum!"

There were other songs like " How do you build a country? It's just like building a house....."

If you'd like to contact me, my email is Revems1@aol.com. It is wonderful to know that someone else loved that play as much as I did and remembers it exists.

Wow! What a difference a few years makes! This was never available online in my past searches!

On another note, I ran into my elementary school music teacher who had taught my class the songs for I Hear a Drum--she found her copy of the music and gave it to me!!!! I was thrilled!

Thanks for the feedback!
