Must be the geatest gathering of genuine Irish traditional singers, musicians & dancers in the world!

Any one out there who can prove otherwise?

On Saturday next I fly back from Granada to Dublin - and drive straight to Miltown for the Willie Week. Talk about culture shock!

Regards

If castanets were to emerge to to the next instrument introduced to Irish music - we will know who to blame.

I went last year and would dearly love to be attending this year. Enjoy it.

Oh man, would I love to be there! But I'll be in Boston with my mother and my son watching him climb in the junior national climbing championships.

In sheer terms of numbers, the All Ireland Fleadh is much bigger. Anyone here heading to Miltown?

Size - they say - is not everything............

Agree totally, "shambles". All depends if "greatest" meant biggest or best. The Fleadh is undoubtedly the biggest but I know which one I'd rather go to.

Sorry I`ll miss it this year. First time in a couple of years now. Ah sure I`ll be in the banner county in a few weeks and there`s never any shortage of good music there, anytime of the year. To those going, enjoy.

Things are very calm here in Miltown Malbay at the moment, by Sunday it will seem like I'm on another planet!

The town's been brightened up a bit this year, more flowers along main street.

Some pubs gone, though (Queally's, Casey's, O'Connor's Quilty, Gleeson's Coore, Conway's Mullagh).

"Must be the geatest gathering of genuine Irish traditional singers, musicians & dancers in the world!"

I guess that the answer to my question.

Unless I was hallucinating, when I submitted my first post to this thread the only other post that showed was GUEST,Hen Harrier's 27 Jun 05 - 11:55 PM post.

Maybe there was another problem with the server???

Hmmmm.

Anyway, please excuse my ignorance, but who is {was} Willie Clancy?

Thank you, Joe.

And anybody else who didn't know but might have difficulty visiting the link Joe provided, here's an excerpt:

"The Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy is Ireland's largest traditional music summer school, held annually since 1973 in memory of the piper Willie Clancy. During the week, nearly a thousand students from every part of the world attend daily classes taught by experts in Irish music and dance. In addition, a full program of lectures, recitals, dances (céilithe) and exhibitions are run by the summer school."

It is without doubt a truly amazing week, unfortunately because Skagen moved fron traditionally being held on the last week-end in June each year to first weekend in July they clash.

However Willie Clancy week is all folk whereas Skagen is becoming more and more of a novelty music festival each year - If you have to get togged up in fancy dress and jump about to put life and expression into your music then something has gone wrong.

Hope everyone has a blast down there in County Clare, particularly the crew in "The Malby" hopefully being looked after as well as ever by "Vinnie" & co.

Well we are heading that way. Assuming we get to Holyhead in spite of the lorry convoy on the A55.
