BS: Has the beast returned?

26 Jun 05 - 09:20 PM (#1510635)
Subject: BS: Has the beast returned?
From: kendall

Last Wednesday my E.N.T., during a routine exam, found another suspicios spot on my vocal cord. It is not in the same place where the other one appeared, and he thinks it looks like a callus. To me it is a red flag because that's what the cancer looked like in the beginning.
We just got back from Old Songs, and although we had a good time, it was hard for me to be unable to sing.
A few good thoughts would be appreciated.

Kendall, I thought that this was going to be some half-assed thread about the Book of Revelations some GUEST had started. Instead it's a whole-assed thread...no, wait, that's not what I meant...it's a perfectly good thread.

Okay. You're gunshy. I can understand that. Oh, boy, can I understand that! So...if it's a callous, what happens? Do they remove it or what? Somehow I can't see them shoving one of these pumice stone things down your throat, though.

I'm betting that the Doctor is right. If he ain't, heck, you've got the Mudcat Cafe pullin' for you. At least I am, and I'll betcha there's at least one or maybe two others, too.

(I've heard that there's a thing called "The Lobster Cure" for stuff like this. You eat lobster with drawn butter until it goes away.)

Captain, try to relax. Stress and worry will inevitably affect your vocal chords. Meditation, relaxation therapy, and in a pinch, a shot of something potent.
I am lighting candles and praying in my own way.

A cornucopia of good thoughts tumbling your way. As Rap said, it's not surprising that you're gunshy. Whatever it is and until it's GONE, you can count on us to circle the wagons around you. You are a Survivor, and we're going to see to it that you stay that way. OK?

Did you and Jacqui get to see KT at Old Songs? We miss her.

Subject: RE: BS: Has the beast returned?
From: jacqui.c

The doctor suggested that, as part of Kendall's vocal cord is missing, that the rest may have been rubbing against the cartiledge in between, thus causing the callus. Kendall has been using his voice more recently and has attempted a few songs as well and we're hoping that it is just overuse that has caused the problem. If that is so then resting his voice should deal with the problem.

However, trying to get him to keep quiet is almost an impossibility, particularly with the fact that we have two more weekends at festivals or picking parties and the temptation to tell stories or sing is almost unbearable. I'm thinking in terms of duct tape at the moment!

We did see KT at Old Songs and had a great time with her and her husband. Kendall was also given a bottle of 12 year old Jamesons by the Woodchucks so has the makings of a shot of something potent if he needs it. This week we will hopefully be busy selling our motorhome and buying a bigger one and that should hold the attention for most of the week.

It's soo good to have the support of our Mudact friends though. Thanks to all of you.

Empathetic thoughts Kendall, but try to keep as cheerful as you can - it lessens the self imposed stress caused by too much pointless worry without establishing hard facts.

Kendall!

My friend Ryan has a tatoo of Mr. T on his calf, because Mr. T scared the cancer out of his Grandfather. He had the same cancer as Mr. T and one day T called him and "yelled at the cancer" to get out of that fellow and leave him alone... and it did.

So, I am holding you in the light, and praying that this is nothing at all, but if it is, I suggest a big mudcat get together to yell at that beast to get lost and stop hounding our dear friend.

lots of love

Jacqui, duct tape sounds like just the thing!!

Kendall, you have told us all, yourself, about the power of belief and good thoughts, etc. I know, from very recent experience, it can be difficult for oneself, but you've done admiralty admirably, so just remember the relaxation, meditation, and visualisation Sins recommends. It works! Also, see if you can come up with an easy to remember, simple positive phrase to say over and over, in your mind, whenever this subject comes up in your thoughts, etc. Mine was "May Peace Prevail."

One other thing...if you can find any sunlight up "thar" go out, tip yer head back so that it is shining full on your face, open wide and swallow some sunshine, several times. I kid you not, this is a very healing tradition.

Ya might also see if Spaw can scare up some possum-fat to rub on yer thoat...Cletus oughta have some.:-)

Lots of love and thanks-givings for you both,

luvyakat

Looking forward to your next visit, too. We're still too poor to do any overseas trips yet. Wait till you see the new train layout! It's in a bigger scale and is still a work in progress - he's working on the scenery at the moment. The foam cliffs look impressive and there is even a pig pen with a couple of pigs in mud. Enormous fun!

Sorry for the drift. We now return you to your regular scheduled program.

My mother had a breast removed because of a malignancy, and we had a bunch of scares and false alarms. Her bone scan turned up a cracked rib. It turned up a lose hip prosthesis. A chest Xray found a callus on her lung. (Breathing Pittsburgh air for several decades will do that to you.) Those scares were tough on us. But it felt incredibly good when they were over.

Kendall -

Its always the uncertainty that is the hardest to take. Once you have a dignosis you will be able to relax or start treatment. Don't forget that there are many who have fought the fight and won. A friend stayed with me while undergoing radiation therapy for the 2nd time and she is still singing at the top of her lungs.

I witnessed her daily routine and I can only say that she continued to live a very active life. She continued to exercise daily (probably more than usual) and she ate alot of kelp! She also soaked in saltwater baths after treatment. Most of all, she painted and sewed to her hearts content.

Good luck to you and remember to stay active and positive in your outlook. There are many thoughts and prayers going your way.

Kendall--the Dr. could well be right about the callous, it does often happen. Geez, wish we were somewhere in the same vicinity as I've helped many a vocalist make the best of what vocal folds they have left after surgeries. Perhaps you can ask around at some of the local universities & see if there's a vocal instructor/coach who might be able to assist you with this. There are many talented instructors who know how to help you beyond the speech therapy!   Do go easy on the booze, though. Alcohol is damaging to the vocal folds!

Kendall,

I was listening to you this morning. That Silverstein song you do about the man with the peg leg--buddy, as God is my judge, it's the first song that has ever made me break out laughing. Others have made me smile from amusement, but that's the first to make me laugh aloud. It's a combination of the writing and the performance. Your timing is wonderful; excellent really. You have this sense of phrasing that's up there with the best I've ever heard. Holbrook's performance in "An Evening With Mark Twain" came close, but man, you have something special. Hang in, Captain. Your newest fan.

Rename "The Beast" "That Annoying Little Insect!" And here's more unsolicited advice: stay away from alcohol! (we'll make sure there is still some left for you later-well, we'll try!) it dehydrates tissues. Drink lots of good water. Tincture of Licorice is very good and soothing for the throat (I use it and can attest to the fact).(There are other healing supplements if you're interested or so inclined, but this is the most soothing I know) Don't mess around, stop talking and singing immediately! Let it heal so you can get back to normal, or you may be facing something worse and/or permanent! We are all pulling for you, and I am praying you have a full recovery, maybe even a cooler sound when this is over! You can do it!

Inquiring minds in Idaho await the answer! Well, no, actually just me. I think I'm the only inquiring mind in Idaho. At least in the part. There might be others. To be fair, I suppose I should say that I'm awaiting the answer.

So.....

Hope is am ambiguous little bastard, isn't it?

According to Greek mythology, Epimetheus (Afterthought), brother of Prometheus (forethought), married Pandora. She came with a dowery and a mysterious chest which he was forbidden to open. He, of course, impulsively opened the box and unleashed all manner of evil upon humankind - pestilence, war, sickness, etc. But in the bottom of the box Hope remained.

So, is Hope the worst of all evils? And if not an evil why was it in the box? And why did it stay?

Stuff like this keeps me awake at night.

I visualize your throat and vocal chords perfectly healthy and pink, Captain. I hear you singing and story telling and being your old self, cranky as all get out but happy and healthy.

Mary

The ENT man has said that the thing hasn't grown and that he is pretty sure it is a callus. However, to be on the safe side, Kendall will be having a scope/biopsy on August 1st, under general anaesthetic. We will get the results on August 10th.

In the meantime there are good things happening - the lobster sing, Champlain Valley festival where he will get together with his old friend Utah Phillips, and the Jed Marum house concert. We're also trying to fit in a trip DownEast to his hometown of Macchias. I've also got my immigration hearing coming up next week, so there is a lot to keep us both occupied.

Thanks to everyone for your good wishes - your thoughts are much appreciated. The love and caring that exists on this site is the main reason why I, for one, keep coming back.

Thanks for the update! Great news that he still thinks it's a callous. But another two weeks of the waiting game....AAARRRGGHH!! Well, that gives us another two weeks to visualize that callous shrinking away to nothing. Every bit of positivve thinking helps. Lots coming from here. Love to you both!

Machias (one "C?") eh? Kendall, we also have a "Machias" out here in Washington state. It's actually only about a 20 minute drive from my home.

My memory says that as the loggers and lumberjacks moved across the Northern states, clearcutting everything that grew, they took their towns with them. As a result, we have many Machias's, Portland's, Saginaw's, Clearwater's (that's where Bride Judy grew up), etc.

CHEERS, and like everyone else here ... best wishes! Bob(deckman)Nelson
