I stuck this in BS cos it seemed like an appropriate place.. what sorta music do you guys listen to when everything's screwed and nobody cares and you're in serious need of some comfort?

Circus music, for sure. And classical music. Also, if I'm in a really bad state, I will sometimes play dark and moody music very loudly on my accordion.

David Lindley, cause Mr. Dave makes me want to dance and dancing, even just by yourself, is an affirmation of life.....sort of a Zorba thing.

Black Sabbath, 1812 overture, Mozart's Coronation Mass, Meat Loaf... anything really loud that I can sing along to at the top of my voice or hit something really hard to!

Which music I listen to when I'm sad depends on what has gotten me down and whether I'm wanting to get myself back 'up' or let the sadness take its natural course before dissapating.

When I want to recharge my spirit I usually play compilations I've made myself of uptempo songs from Caribbean music [Soca, Reggae, Compas]; USA: Zydeco & Wild Indian music, African music [particularly Nigerian Juju and Ghanaian Highlife}}. If I want to be energized I also mix in some Latin Jazz like Tito Puente and Mongo Santamaria and some Brazilian samba music.

If I'm in to being sad, I usually listen to some African American gospel music and/or some oldies R&B love music. Of course, these tend to make me sadder.

And yes, I also add Blues songs to the list of songs I'd add to the wallow-in-sadness mood music; though if I'm wanting to move from the sadness I will add some uptempo Blues-more vocal than instrumental.

I definitely add old school and contemporary R&B & Bass {House} dance music to the list of music that lifts me out of my depressed mood.

I also add some Jazz samples in both types of mood music-when I'm wanting to be 'up', and when I'm wallowing in being 'down'. ...

And I also have added some samples from the CDs I've gotten from Catters-though I'm not sure what category or categories of music that is [pop? folk? both?]

Ah! maybe it's ETHNIC music! LOL!!!

I sometimes listen to an alt.country act, Rex Hobart & The Misery Boys. He's got a song called Feeling Sorry For Myself, with lines like "I hate folks like me, can't see joy for all they've got".

It just reminds me how self-indulgent and ridiculous it is to stay miserable

Years ago, I would have probably said Brahms or Bach. When I could still work, on the most stressful days I listened to His Tommyness--Tommy Emmanuel, CPG (Certified Guitar Picker--an honor bestowed upon him by Mister Nashville himself, the late Mr. Chet Atkins) His fangerpickin' sure does help my disposition.

Django Reinhardt is good music for lifting the spirit. And for tidying the house! So kill 2 birds with one stone!

ANGELO BRANDUARDI (Italian) and FLAIRCK (Dutch, mostly instrumental).

I speak little Italian, and it helps - because at times like those I want to listen to the music and the arrangements in order to relax; not to the lyrics, as they would engage the wrong side of the brain.

For serious comfort, I'd say mainly classical instrumental music--especially calming or transporting music--e.g. Mendelssohn -Fingal's Cave, Scottish Symphony, or his violin concerto. Lots of Mozart. Beethoven--Pastoral Symphony. Any of Brahms' 4 symphonies. Also, though choral--Mozart Requiem, Brahms Requiem---definitely transporting pieces.

If you want to hit back at the people who have screwed up everything-- if you can finger somebody for the situation-- , there's a real good song on country radio now (which is actually 70s rock under another name). Anyway, it's "My Give-A-Damn's Busted".   Sounds like a good candidate to play and sing along with in this situation. Some other older (a few years) country songs are "Here's A Quarter--Call Someone Who Cares" and "Blame It On Your (Lyin' Cheatin' Cold Dead-Beatin' Two-Timin'-Double-Dealin' Lovin') Heart."

Also, as Azizi mentioned, to raise your spirits--reggae---especially the soundtrack to The Harder They Come and some Bob Marley--Exodus, for instance.

And then there's also the Who--"Won't Get Fooled Again"---especially the cathartic scream towards the end.

I always remember a spoof advert on some comedy show. It was supposedly advertising a compilation album with weepy melodramatic songs (Without You, etc). They called it "music for women........in a bit of a state"

Narrative songs by guys like Ian Tyson and Townes Van Zandt

Old-fashioned country music

Exotica that just plain sounds beautiful: Manouche guitarists (especially Django Reinhardt), Cesaria Evora, the Buena Vista Social Club, Los Romeros, the Gipsy Kings.

I'm a wallower. When I feel like crap, happy music makes me want to kill something, so I mostly listen to something grim until the mood passes (however long that takes).

Scott Biram. Somewhere between blues and punk. Basically, it's somebody to do my screaming, cursing, and evil thinking for me. I listened to him a whole lot before I changed jobs (I'm much less angry now).

If I'm just plain depressed, it's usually Son Volt. Occasionally Gillian Welch or Kelly Joe Phelps.

I have a cassette around here somewhere that is nothing more than the sound of the human heartbeat. It starts off at a normal rhythm and then slows down....our bodies...being unique creations of their own....tend to follow the heartbeat on the tape....knocks me out every single time. It alters the heartbeat as well as my breathing.

I also used to listen to a Whales Alive kind of CD but my roommate complained that it gave her nightmares about whales and Dr. Spock.

Go figure.

Thump tump

Back when I listened to music in an altered state of consciousness, I really enjoyed songs like Michael Chapman's "New York Ladies" or "The Stranger." John Martyn's guitar solo on "Head & Heart" was also a fave. Richard Thompson's "When I Get to the Border." Another intense musical experience was Martin Carthy's "Famous Flower of Serving Men." Who has the time anymore, but I still enjoy all that music.
