Here's a site with lists of hit songs in the UK, US and Oz for 1965. Hope that helps.

What sort of music do they like?

Interesting - Help! was at number one when they got married. I'd like to find a folk song to sing if possible. They mostly listen to classical music, but I'm not up to an aria I'm afraid.

How about Eric Bogle's song, "The Belle of Broughton?"

I would donate, "Sweet Sorrow in the Wind," composed on my own 25th. Our 55th is coming up- so maybe the song worked!

Laurie Lewis wrote and sang "Clark and Hazel" on The Oak and Laurel CD. It was written for their 50th anniversary.   Just change the names...

Sweet Sorrow in the Wind-- what a good idea! Flower from the Fields of Alabama (old recording: Burnett and Rutherford; modern: Red Mountain White Trash, and they have an extra verse!) is one we've sung at weddings, as is "When the roses bloom in Dixieland" (Carter Family) and "Rose of my Heart" (Hugh Moffatt)
OR just make up your own, especially for them. I did this for two friends who just celebrated their 14th anniversary. . .

Tom Lehrer's When You Are Old And Gray.

Somewhat more seriously, there's Stan Rogers' Lies.

There's the duet Tevye & his wife do in Fiddler On The Roof,
where he keeps asking her, "Do you love me?"

I'd stay away from John McCutcheon's The Red Corvette.

Forty years ago "I got you babe" was in the charts.

I could imagine that gong down really well sung in a folky way and maybe slowing it down and using the people there to do the chorus.

In fact with a bit of imagination it could be a real hoot.

The Anniversary Song. Can't remenmber who wrote it but Eva Cassidy recorded it. Should be easy to track down.

Is this it? just pulled it out of google:-

Today has been a special day
An anniversary, a request
That you play your piano
As the evening sun slowly sets

Chorus:- I never thought I'd get this old dear
Never had a reason to live so long
And the Lord's been like my shadow
Even when I was wrong
No I never thought it would turn out this way

A birthday with apologies
For all the tears and regrets
And I've always saved your poetry
For those years when you forget

Chorus:- I never thought I'd…

So sing with me softly
As the day turns to night
And later I'll dream of paradise with you
I love you and good night

WHEN I'M SIXTY-FOUR
(Lennon/McCartney)
As recorded by The Beatles on "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" (1967)

When I get older losing my hair
Many years from now
Will you still be sending me a valentine
Birthday greetings, bottle of wine?
If I'd been out till quarter to three
Would you lock the door?
Will you still need me, will you still feed me
When I'm sixty-four?

You'll be older too
And if you say the word
I could stay with you

I could be handy, mending a fuse
When your lights have gone
You can knit a sweater by the fireside
Sunday mornings go for a ride
Doing the garden, digging the weeds
Who could ask for more?
Will you still need me, will you still feed me
When I'm sixty-four?

Every summer we can rent a cottage in the Isle of Wight
If it's not too dear
We shall scrimp and save
Grandchildren on your knee
Vera, Chuck & Dave

Send me a postcard, drop me a line
Stating point of view
Indicate precisely what you mean to say
Yours sincerely, wasting away
Give me your answer, fill in a form
Mine for evermore
Will you still need me, will you still feed me
When I'm sixty-four?
Ho!

(do they have grand children...change the names??)
