Tech: Netscape Test please

02 Aug 05 - 02:04 PM (#1533461)
Subject: BS: Netscape Test please
From: wilbyhillbilly

A customer of mine complained that when he tried to access my site (he is using Netscape) it closed down his browser. I have never known of this to happen before and don't know if it is his problem or mine. Would someone please be kind enough to try to access my site http://www.vinyltransfer.me.uk
with netscape and let me know the result, so if necessary I can try to rectify it if there is a problem.

Many Thanks.

It's not a problem with firefox.

The pop-up add is a bit "in yer face"
Nice crafty way to get people to your site, full marks for that.

I had no problem with Netscape 7.0 (which I mostly don't use anymore) or with Firefox. The latter loads your pages much faster, BTW.

For a minute I thought Edgbaston had been renamed.

I just tried Netscape 4.7 and had no problems. But when I tried Mozilla, my primary browser, it went right down. There's a link that John in Kansas posted on another thread that will crash the computer completely - Tom

Shakey, I have been about here for a very long time and have a few friends here, I asked for help. I have a lot of work from friends and don't need to con anyone into going to my site. But thanks for trying it out. It would appear that its the prospective customers problem. Thanks all.

I am still trying to get rid of that "in yer face" ad, got conned into paying $147 then the site did a runner and ignored all contact.

Still, live and learn.

Thanks again,

Netscape 7.1 here, and ya... it crashed my browser...

Umm... you folks know that Mozilla and Netscape are mostly the same thing right?

Oops, just when you thought....................

Now what the hell do I do?

Thank you Clinton, I will now start trying to find the cure, if there is one.

No problem Shakey, just thought I'd set the record straight before more jumped on the bandwagon.

For what it's worth, it seemed to be trying to load something Java when it crashed....

seemed to be....

Ah, I wonder if it is something to do with that poxy advert, nobody mentioned anything before and the site has been there for over twelve months. Seems a bit too coincidental, thanks.

I use Netscape 4.7 which started laoding OK but got sidetracked by the pop-up ad. Got stuck at that point.
Tried it ttree times ...the same thing happened with the browser but the add was different each time.

Clinton, I know this is a bit cheeky, but do you think you could give it another try please, I am sure I have now got rid of that advert, which did have java in the code.
Hopefully this will cure it.

Thanks.

Incidentally, no problem with the latest version of MSIE here (but you probably knew that) and no pop-up either.

I HATE FLASH - it never provides information that can't be done textually. It is eye candy and luckily you have a short movie. Otherwise I would not have waited. Try giving the surfer an option that allows for FLASH or non Flash pages rather than give it to them and hope. You may find that Flash is the culprit. If you have JavaScript try declaring the JavasScript level.
eg
<script type="text/JavaScript" language="JavaScript 1.2">

I have the book - Pure JavaScript and that tells you all the different browsers that any instruction can cope with. Try dumbing down on JavaScript.

I'm on Netscape--what? 8.6? I don't know, but it's fairly current.

I had no problem getting into your site. Did a little exploring, and came back. No prob.

What's with this "in yer face pop-up?"   I didn't see no steenkin' popup. The only thing I saw that was in any way unusual was the animated Hello, and that was surely no problem. What's with the pop-up business, anyway?

I think he removed it Dave O. I'm not sure whether that will prove to be a fix or not. I might be missunderstand but the way I'm reading it, although it might solve the crash, if it was an ad placed by the service provider as payment, he might find the site does not last too long.

My understanding of one of wilbyhillbilly's posts above is that he paid for the webspace, so they should not be sticking him with a javascript pop-up.

I use Opera...but I use it with Proxomitron as a filter, so I get NO pop-up and no sound and no ads. Sometimes I don't even know I've missed problems. I would never, never, NEVER put up a site on a server that foisted off ads and pop-ups to my friends....no matter what.

Opera, Mozilla, Firefos. amd Epiphany all worked fine.

The site is paid for and the server is one of the best I have come across. They do NOT foist pop-ups or any other advertising. The problem was a Zoom-in Ad that I inadvertently got conned into which was a BIG mistake and soon as I realised what was happening, thanks to Clinton, I managed to cure the problem by getting rid of the java script, it is now back to normal.
I am now a lot wiser, although $147 less well off, with no hope of recovering it.

Anyway, thanks again for everyones input and help.

Think about the Flash bypasses, there are ways of testing for Flash plug-ins in JavaScript and not loading, but it is easier to ask the surfer. Their annoyance is to do with time, and I refuse to load the plug-in till all my audience have it - and are on broadband.

But JavaScript can do wonders if you know what happens when it fails. I test my site on various strapped-down systems and on one college net some machines report a problem without apparently faltering and others that look identical don't.

I have contrived to put all semi-colons in properly but still can't figure it.

My JavaScript is frippery and when not working does not prevent the data being seen.
