06 Aug 05 - 02:32 PM (#1536503) Subject: Answering lyrics requests From: Joe Offer You know, I really wish people would learn to give real information when answering lyrics requests, instead of just rushing to post a link and beat the clock, or telling people they ought to look at Cowpie or somewhere other than Mudcat. I don't know the song and don't know where to find it, but I do know from the link above that song is called "Love Over Lonesome" on a CD called All This, and Money, Too! by The Country Gazette. Country Gazette do a lot of traditional and classic country songs, so that could be an indication that this song is an old classic - or not. I also know from searching Cowpie that I couldn't find the song there - but I really haven't learned to search Cowpie's search engine to my satisfaction. But the fact that I searched such-and-such a site and didn't find the song is information, a piece of the puzzle that may help somebody find the song later. The name of the album and performer is also information that may help somebody more than a link that may not work a year from now. The links are good - please always give them when you post information, so we know where the information come from. But when we're talking music, please also post the pieces of information you find, not just links. it's so frustrating to come across a dead link to stuff that could have been quite valuable - and to find that the poster didn't take the time to post the actual information that was found. On music threads, we need both the information and the source of the information. An exception would be for current popular music, which is not really of much interest or value to our folk music clientele. If it's a request for popular songs that aren't classics, a link will suffice. All of this has been stated in the FAQ for years, by the way. A few of our "regulars" constantly give nothing but links and misinformation, and that gives other people the impression that that is our norm. Our "regulars" should know by now that our purpose is to provide actual information, not just to direct people somewhere else. Finding songs can be a very satisfying cooperative effort, if people take the time to post the pieces of information they find. -Joe Offer- |

As it so happened, I was at a local bluegrass concert last night at the county fair. The guy who sang the song last Friday sat directly behind me. So I said, "Tom, what is the name of the song you closed with last Friday night? Love over Lonesome?" He said yes, that John Hadley wrote it and Country Gazette sang it. Ok, fine.
