Review: 'I Was Born In Portland Town' film

A feature film by Patrick Ferryn, about the life of Derroll Adams called "I Was Born in Portland Town" has just been released.
I had the pleasure of viewing it last night.

Having known Derroll in Los Angeles, I have to say that it
really captures his spirit and artistry. The film works for me
on a number of levels. From the interviews, you can tell the people who really knew Derroll from the ones that purported to know him. The last segment of the film will leave no one in doubt as to who Derroll really was , a fine person as well as a great singer, songwriter and interpreter of traditional American folk music. I won't spoil it by telling you about what happened to Derroll's song "I Was Born In Portland Town" but it's a shocking abuse of what the folk music business has become.

Patrick with love and clairvoyance has made an important movie about a fine artist who was relatively unknown in the States but had a following in Europe. He touched everyone deeply with whom he came into contact.

Derroll was a no bullshit kind of guy like Woody who was
wise-weary and insightful. His wisdom carried into his songs, many of which he wrote and re-wrote in the folk tradition.

For furthur information about it's release and sale please contact Patrick Ferryn at       Caboose.productions@skynet.be

Because I believe this to be a great film, I want everyone in the folk community to see it.

Thanks for the heads up, Frank. His film Banjo Frolic looks to be worth a viewing as well.

The new film about Derroll Adams produced by Patrick Ferryn
is a must see for all who care about folk music. It is a loving biography of a man, who in my opinion, was neglected as an
important interpreter of American folk music today. Even Alan Lomax missed him.

This film is headed toward Sundance and if there is any
justice, it should receive an award.

Derroll was the "real deal" and eschewed a lot of the hype
that surrounds the show biz that much of folk music became.
The late Bascom Lamar Lunsford was an important influence in his approach.

I knew Derroll personally and his legacy is felt by all of us who were fortunate enough to hear him play and sing. He captured the essence of the traditional banjo-pickin' traditional balladeer
and had an important message for us as an artist.

Frank,

I want to see it! Is it showing at a theater near you and Mary? (I KNOW itt won't be coming to Peru, Illinois' mall theaters ;-)

I do suspect I'll have to get it from Netflix---the only way we can see anything half way good these days.

Met him a few times and loved him both as a performer and as a man, hope it will 'cross the pond'

The reason I'm promoting the film is because I knew Derroll
and I feel that it is an honest portrayal of who he was.

Too often there are people who need to be acknowledged
and are forgotten if they aren't in the "pantheon of folk stars".
