Origins: A Fine Romance (D Fields/Jerome Kern)

Subject: Origins: Copyright for A Fine Romance?
From: Stephen L. Rich

Does anyone know the copyright owner of the song A Fine Romance. I know that it was written by Dorothy fields and Jerome Kern. It premiered in 1936 in the film Swing Time and was sung by Asaire and Rogers. I also know the lyrics and the tune. I've done every configuration of websearch that I can tink of (inluding ASCAP and BMI).

Does anyone have an old showtunes songbook or some sheet from which they could look up the copyright date and owner? That is the only information that I actually need so that a proper listing can be made on the CD which I just recorded with Sandy Andina and so that proper royalties can be paid.

Hi, Stephen - you're right that it's by Dorothy Fields and Jerome Kern. It's listed by the Harry Fox Agency (search for the exact title A Fine Romance), and you can get a recording license at http://www.songfile.com/ - the process is fairly easy for small quantities - all you need is your trusty old credit card.

Here is the copyright gibberish, from Reading Lyrics, by Robert Gottlieb and Robert Kimball (published in 2000):
A Fine Romance ©1936 (Renewed), Universal-Polygram International Publishing, Inc. and Aldi Music (c/o Songwriters Guild of America). All rights for U.S. and Canada controlled by Universal-Polygram International Publishing, Inc. All rights reserved. Warner Brothers Publications U.S., Inc., Miami, FL 33014

Hope that does the trick for you. It's a fine song, isn't it? There's a playful recording by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong that brings out all the humor of the lyrics.

The tune is well known in the UK as it was the title - and theme tune - for a long running romantic comedy tv series - staring Judie Dench ( of James Bond film fame - amongst lots of other roles! )

Dave Maloney does a really good version of this on Reilly and Maloney's At Last album.

P.S. Joe -- your info may be more recent, but three of our Hal Leonard "Fake Books" show copyright info as follows:

Copyright 1936 T.B. Harms Company
c/o The Welk Music Group
Santa Monica, CA 90401

Copyright renewed

(but they don't say when the copyright was renewed...)?

Not trying to cause trouble; if the link above lets you license it, go for it, I'd say. Just curious, though--how do you tell for sure who holds a copyright when there is varying info??

Lin,
As for the fine points of who owns the copyright, I tend to send the money to the Fox office and let them sort it out.

As for Riley and Maloney, they used to do a wondrful version of it. They are now, however, sick to death of it. That's how it became part of Andina and Rich's act. They told Sandy Andina, "Her! Take it! Make it go away! Please!"

Subject: Lyr Add: A FINE ROMANCE (D Fields/Jerome Kern)
From: Jim Dixon

A FINE ROMANCE
Words, Dorothy Fields; music, Jerome Kern; ©1936.

I. As sung by Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire in the film "Swing Time" (1936) [YouTube]

[Ginger Rogers:]
A fine romance with no kisses.
A fine romance, my friend, this is.
We should be like a couple of hot tomatoes,
But you're as cold as yesterday's mashed potatoes.
A fine romance; you won't nestle.
A fine romance; you won't wrestle.
I've never mussed the crease in your blue serge pants.
I never have the chance.
This is a fine romance.

A fine romance, my good fellow.
You take romance; I'll take Jell-O.
You're calmer than the seals in the Arctic Ocean.
At least, they flap their fins to express emotion.
A fine romance with no quarrels,
With no insults and all morals.
You're just as hard to land as the Île-de-France.
I never get the chance.
This is a fine romance.

[Fred Astaire:]
A fine romance with no kisses.
A fine romance, my friend, this is.
True love should have the thrill that a healthy clime has.
We don't have half the thrills that The March of Time has.
A fine romance with no clinches.
A fine romance with no pinches.
You never give the orchids I send a glance.
No, you like cactus plants.
This is a fine romance.

II. As recorded by Fred Astaire, 1936.

A fine romance with no kisses.
A fine romance, my friend, this is.
We should be like a couple of hot tomatoes,
But you're as cold as yesterday's mashed potatoes.
A fine romance; you won't nestle.
A fine romance; you won't wrestle.
You're just as hard to land as the Île-de-France.
I haven't got a chance.
This is a fine romance.

A fine romance, my good woman,
My strong aged-in-the-wood woman.
You're calmer than the seals in the Arctic Ocean.
At least, they flap their fins to express emotion.
A fine romance with no clinches.
A fine romance with no pinches.
You never give the orchids I send a glance.
No, you like cactus plants.
This is a fine romance.

Oh, boy what a romance!
