28 Aug 05 - 11:34 AM (#1551564) Subject: RE: BS: kelvinhaugh From: John MacKenzie Geographically a haugh is a low lying pice of ground usually beside a river, it is reckoned that the derivation of the name of the town of Hamilton in Lanarkshire derives from Haugh Mill Town, lying as it does near the confluence of the Clyde and the Avon. If you look at the river Kelvin in its' present state as it flows through Glasgow you will find the river bank is mostly built up, and any flat riverside land that did exist is now gone. Therefore I suggest that Kelvinhaugh where the bleacher lassie plied her trade is now long gone. Giok |

It's about half a mile from the River Kelvin. There's a Kelvinhaugh Street there, and a Haugh Road. |
