Denis rang me up once, to say that he'd heard a song that I'd recorded played on the local folk radio station, and that he liked it a lot.   His approval meant a lot to me, and I was grateful that he took the effort to phone.

Dennis played a significant role in the life of Community Independents , Blue Mountains First...... a group formed to represent the community of the Blue Mountains. He entertained us at our social gatherings, he wrote us letters with ideas/issues for action. At a party at my home two years ago Denis expressed concern that a lot of his files would be lost. He wanted this information to be preserved, maintained and used for the welfare of the mountains. If anyone is interested I have a short video film of Denis' performance at this party.

My fondest memory of Denis is at a meeting at Katoomba 23 October 2003, opposing the proposed sand mine at Newnes Junction, on the border of the World Heritage Area. The rally, organised by the Colong Foundation and Blue Mountains Conservation Society, heard arguments against the mine from Ian Cohen (Greens MLC), Keith Muir and Fiona McCrossan (Colong Foundation), local resident Sean Butler and Andrew Cox (National Parks Association of NSW). I noticed Denis walk in and I suddenly thought of the connection between sand mining and concrete, so I rushed up to him and asked him if he would recite 'Concreto' at the end of the meeting. As always, Denis was happy to contribute and the audience joined in with great gusto. It was wonderful to watch the developers endure Denis and the audience in full flight with: 'It's grey.....smooth...beautiful.... concreto'. Even the developers had to smile!

Thanks, Jenny, for your story. I can just picture Denis up there reciting his poem with that wonderful gleam in his eye.
