If so, I can send you the chord diagrams I use to play it - but I do it using C Modal tuning, which I suspect Dougie might use on that one. It can be played in standard (or slightly better in drop D) but the nice 'runs' Dougie puts in fall much easier in C Modal. I don't do the 'dots' to any reasonable standard (or tab!) and am a player-by-ear rather than by theory, but can map it out using chord diagrams on Publisher (which I've used quite succesfully at guitar workshops at some festivals). Let me know... Cheers - HFA |

Sorry, I can play it but I can't do tab or dots. HFA - are you a certain someone who I saw some time ago at Market Rasen FC (Walesby Village Hall) and who's playing at the Gainsborough Festival this year? S:0) |
05 Oct 05 - 09:45 AM (#1576421) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Talking with my father(Dougie Maclean) From: HipflaskAndy Hi Strollin' man - yep - that'll be me! Thought we might all know that as I often sign me proper moniker on an HFA post when summat important enough wants 'signing'. I actually do it in CGCGCD (not top E) but it's equally easy either way - far easier than standard! - but tell no one, or they'll all be at it and I won't seem so 'clever' ;^) I can easily stick enough down (using my own Publisher template) to put it across to our 'guest' here - I shy clear of the dots and tab myself! I can do it, but it slows me down too much. See you at Gainsb' perhaps SJ? Looking forward to it. Cheers - HFA |

BTW it was your mention of the two Oakwoods in another thread that gave it away!! I'll try it with the D instead of the E. Thanks for the tip. Cheers, S:0) |
05 Oct 05 - 12:25 PM (#1576539) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Talking with my father(Dougie Maclean) From: Strollin' Johnny And Guest Fiosrach - you can hear the words clearly on Dougie's CD. He's a guy who's given much to the folk music scene, he takes pleasure in others using and enjoying his songs, but he's a professional musician who needs to sell his work to live - buy the CD and give him something back? :-) S:0) |

Beer and a natter sounds good SJ. Looking forward to it. 'gave it away'? - but I put m' name alongside HFA quite often. How much a give-away is that? ;^) Cheers - HFA (Duncan) |

14 Oct 19 - 04:41 AM (#4013556) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Talking with My Father (Dougie MacLean) From: GUEST,Keith Worby I came to watch you at The Stables Milton Keynes, that I enjoyed very much. Then bought a few of your CDs that I have playing in my car when I go on long journeys, I play guitar myself and have learnt to play a few of your songs thanks to my guitar teacher who is also a big fan of yours, I’m nowhere near as good as you play them and sing them, but one of your songs that I would like to try to play is Talking with my Father, but I can’t find the chords to this song anywhere. If you could let me know where I might find these I would be very grateful who knows I might share the royalties from my first show ha ha with you. Hope you are keeping well. Keith |
14 Oct 19 - 06:09 PM (#4013675) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Talking with My Father (Dougie MacLean) From: Nick You can play it standard if you are not concerned about the twiddly bits (though you can play them in standard It’s basically capo 4th or 5th fret C G/B Fmaj7/A G x3 C C/E Fmaj7 G Chorus C C/E Fmaj7 G C CE Fmaj7 G C Am Am/G Fmaj7 G C C/E Fmaj7 G You could also do the following. Tune the B string UP a semitone to C. Partially capo the guitar at the fourth fret across the top five strings. You then have the low open E when you need it and just play the same chords as before just slightly modified. It enables you to ape the original twiddles without radically retuning the guitar C 03200 G/B X20023 Fmaj7/A X03200 G 72002X Am X02200 Etc One of the twiddly bit can be aped after the G chord by pulling off the fourth fret of the second string to open then pull off from second fret of same string to open; then pull off from second fret of third string to open. Easier to play than describe! Not exact but gives an easy way to play it without faffing about. Many of his songs are capoed at 4th or 5th fret and I often use the tuning to play his songs. Works for Caledonia and many others. Much of his distinctive sound is playing alternative root chords. Or to my ears anyway. There is an example of the tuning on another Dougie song here as an example Here |

The whole idea of being able to say what you want to say, and being forgiven for it, just because you're getting a wee bit older, really appeals to me. Sure I'm guilty of it myself tho maybe not yet got to the forgiven stage! |
