Where do Mudcatters live?

If this has been discussed, please forgive & ignore me. I've been enjoying seeing how old we are & what we do. It got me wondering how widespread we are, as well. I live about an hour North of New York City, USA.

Best to all,

I somehow suspected this was coming...After years of transfers, I came home. Not exactly the same town, but in the hills of Southeast Ohio. Your security system is your neighbors, 350 kids show up at Halloween, everybody knows your name, etc. Won't last, but it's great til it ends.

Various places in Central Florida for nearly twenty years. Folks, you wouldn't believe the population growth down here, a friend and I once narrowly dodged a forest fire while out in the boonies, went walkin' through the burned out area while the trees were still smokin'. That area is now suburban for miles around. Places I used to camp are fenced, places I fished are filled with jet skis and power boats. Almost bought a piece of land about twenty miles from the coast, was warned by a well driller they were getting saltwater intrusion, we're sucking that much water out of the ground. I believe it was J.F.urged us not to move to New Mexico,He must have seen something like this. A paradise pissed away. Most of the finest places I've seen in this region are now covered with real estate signs. Or luxury golf developements.

I agree with Frank about what is happening here. This is my second time thru. Had a choice about transferring here or probably unemployed in a real swamp(South Louisiana). Sometimes I think the real swamp was better. Still have one son there. Went back last fall & found that going to hell too. McHamburger on every corner. There are few p;aces this is not happening. The town I grew up in in So. Wisconsin had some of the best farmland in the world & they are covering it with concrete as fast as they can.

It takes about an hour and a half to reach the coast (Washington or Oregon) and the same time to reach the ski areas on Mount Hood in Oregon. Nice Place.

G'day,
Click on the link below, and find the point 151º longitude, 34º latitude (two lines cross, there's a large BM near it) & go up er.. about an inch until you find the word "towers" just to the left of the 151º line. Alison lives close to the 'o', I live about 1mm north of the 's'.

While you are there the infamous Botany Bay is about an inch to the right of the aforementioned point and Sydney Harbour is about an inch north of that.

Here it is.

Cheers,
Alan

Just about 30 miles north and east of Baltimore (see I lie in my signature, but who's heard of Westminster) I was born and raised here. Thanks to Uncle Sam's Army I have seen a little more of the world. We used to be cow country, but now we are mostly suburbs. It still feels like home, because its the only one I've known. I've come to realize though that I am a misfit here, I think too liberally to be a part of it all, but I love the many salt of the earth people who still live here (even if they are conservatives). This change that Frank, Frank and I have talked about (open spaces going to pot) is a common folk music theme. Think I'll start a thread.

To the Cat who posted from Northwestern CT: are you familiar with Granville, MA, which is just across the border from Enfield, in the Berkshires? When I moved form Wyoming to New England, we spent our first year there. Then, after living in Northampton, MA for a few years, we lived in Mystic, CT, until we moved back to Wyoming, which HEY GUYS, is far from ever being over-developed. We've got so much wide open prairie, you'd think we had a planet of our own! But I do miss New England, still have a daughter in Groton, CT. Eastern Colorado and even the Western slope, both homes of my ancestors, are going the way of the swamps and it is utterly disgusting and heartbreaking to see.

I was born where the mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea. Moved to Belfast, lived there during the seventies in the markets. Moved to Canada with a band called Flash. Who were quite well known in the late seventies in Ireland atleast. Played the Blarney Stone for six weeks and decided to stay in Vancouver. Lived there and in the Fraser Valley for sixteen years. Now live in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, a great place to bring up kids. This might sound a little contrived but when I read about other Mudcaters its really interesting to learn about where you are in the world and where you came from and that we all share something. For me its interesting to hear from other people from Ireland and people from BC in Canada and people from my new home in Nova Scotia. Anyway thanks for listening.

Hey, Mary! Good to see someone else from Kentucky responding. I didn't think there would be anyone out there who would really recognize where Lyndon was/is. Bardstown's a great city - I'm sure a big improvement over Louisville/Lyndon. My lovely wife, Teresa and myself live in a new area of Lyndon (well, it's about 10 years old)and we like the location (close to shopping, etc. - could be good/ could be bad).

When you lived here, did you know any of the folkies around and about? Janey Robertson? Ronnie Dee? Kenny Pyle? Ed Adams? Bob Rosenthall?. Any names in particular or those with whom you may have played/performed? What are you up to now? Any folkies down your way? I know a few people in Bardstown, but none that are musicians.

We have a couple of "Hoots" a year in Louisville (Memorial Day Sunday and Labor Day Sunday). Everyone is welcome!

Hey Mary. Everyone's a folkie, just varying degrees. Hope you are playing an instrument or have designs to do so. I have not been, but understand there's a good folk week in Bardstown in late July, early August (every year). Also, Ky. Music Weekend (Irquois Park - Louisville), always a great show, is right before that event and many performers just pick up and go there.

JamesJimFolk-most of my music is listening and discovering new tunes these days. The Internet has opened a whole new venue for me to explore. In the last year I've discovered many new Scottish and Appalachian tunes. I just recently heard about the Iroquois Park festival. The one in Bardstown got cancelled, probably due to commercialism, etc. There is a real wealth of knowledge and resources right in this community, and I'm surprised nearly everyday that people I've known for years are so in touch with so much of the history of this entire region...and there are Irish music nuts like me everywhere. I'll send a personal note with more details.

And Skarpi---I have a very good feelings about people from Iceland. Friends of ours were there in the Air Force and said all the men there looked like my husband (blond, blue eyes, a little stout)...said they were descended from Vikings or something. ;-)

Do you sound as beautiful as the wind in the pines and a storm coming down the valley? I don't care to hear the wolves. It would have been much cheaper to just park a sound truck ou in the woods somewhere. Strange....they(the wolves) don't seem where they are suppost to stay.

Hey, all; very fascinating to see where y'all are from and live now. I am originally from Elmira, NY; have lived in Geneseo and Rochester, NY; also in Amherst, Northampton and Easthampton, MA; and now live in Medford after 5 years in Brookline (both just outside Boston). Also spent two summers and one month of January in Oxford, UK (actually in January it was in Dorchester-on-Thames-- and dearly love this area and wish I could revisit there often. I also spent some time in Northern Wales which I also loved, as well as various other towns throughout Wales and England. I feel like I live in all these places since they are all so vivid most of the time...and since I wish sometimes I did not live exactly where I do... I wish flying a plane were not so damn disagreeable. peg

To my knowledge, there's only one town by that name in the world, so state and country should be unnecessary, eh? Sometimes a highly amusing place, sometimes highly weird. Have to travel miles and hours to get to my music, usually. But then, I'm only 45 minutes from Pampa...and it can be nice living in a place where ONE murder is front-page news. Specific info is not required nor requested. For instance, I am currently listed as the only 'Catter in West Virginia which I know to be inaccurate. I know of at least two others who are not listed. Basically living in transit between Jackson and Tupelo, Mississippi; howbeit, "home' shall ever be Carroll County, Mississippi. Home of dust; gravel, and Mississippi John; where the evil vine Kudzu proclaimed himself king and has proven it with a vengeance. I have seen forests, cars, barns and houses consumed by the plague. Alas, poor old Harry Lee Wigglesworth, who, given to much drink, and passing out on the side of the road, was absorbed and assimilated by the vine. A sad situation, indeed.

I'm from Pittsburgh. I was born on the North Side, like Mary Roberts Rhineheart, Mary Cassat, and Gertrude Stein. I grew up in the East End, like Annie Dillard, whose "An American Childhood" is largely fiction. Yeah, I know a good deal of local history, and I have a nasty habit of passing it on.

There is a post on this long thread referencing

INISHBOFIN. It was a dare, actually.
And I don't know if anybody got that mackerel.

If you pull up this thread using the feature
that restricts you to fifty posts per page,
then the post is on page 3.

As stated elsewhere, I am lousy at making Mudcat posts into blickies.
But it's here, all right.

And I am posting from the public library in Millis, Massachusetts --
although that isn't where my apartment is...
they just have got a much nicer library over here.

Alas, some of the earlier posters to this thread
had headed for the great musical database in the heavens.

(Or is the best music elsewhere....)

Any Mudcatter that is not a rabid right-winger can have a pint with me any time, or even a bloody cappuccino if you're that way inclined (I'm inclined both ways) if you're anywhere near Bude in Cornwall. It's beautiful here. "The Loveliest Peace of Cornwall." Not my words. A PM may get you a free coffee. "May" being the operative word!

Then there are Mudcatters, like Amos,
who have moved across the continent.
