Loughstock 4-score (N. Irish meet)

14 Oct 05 - 12:50 PM (#1583124)
Subject: Loughstock 4-score (N. Irish meet)
From: Fibula Mattock

Hello all,

Following highly successful Loughstock I-III Mudcat Gatherings in the lovely setting of Portaferry, Co. Down, N. Ireland, it is now time for Loughstock IV.

However, this is no ordinary Loughstock. This one co-incides with my 30th birthday and Bassic's 50th birthday, so we are combining them to have a grand Mudcatting 80th birthday, namely LOUGHSTOCK FOUR SCORE!

There are lots of details and I have them on a web site - I just have to put the web site on some web space, and as soon as I figure out where that'll be, I'll post the link.

In the meantime:

WHAT: Mudcat gathering and significant birthday celebrations

WHERE: Portaferry, Co. Down, N. Ireland

WHEN: 3rd-5th February 2006 (dates non-negotiable as thats when we were born)

More to follow!!

Thanks for asking! He's hopping around on crutches inside the house, and has just started a little bit of weightbearing. If he wants to go more than a few metres though, he's still using the wheelchair. We wheeled him right along the shore (and back, as we were feeling generous) on Sunday - my arms are much stronger now.

Now that the Getaway is out of the way I can think about Loughstock now ! I will definately be in on this again , and will be quite happy to share car hire costs with any one who wants to coincide flights to and from , Friday midday-ish and Monday early afternoon - Probably Stanstead - Belfast International . I will start checking flight times and costs -Last year EasyJet were a good deal !
Glad to know your dad is getting there Fibs , and will no doubt be in fine fettle for February .

Having not picked my fiddle up in many, many months I had it out last night while the spag bol was stewing and managed a few rounds of "le canal en octobre", and very octoberish it was too.

Hostel up and running to my knowledge, love to see yous there, might even get a bit of dancing in (having become an avid set dancer over the past year).

Will talk more about it soon, promise, but things are chaotic at the moment as it's only a few weeks into term and I'm frantically trying to stay on top of things...

Don't go changing!

My friend in Scotland wants to go. I just might be able to make it. Tickets from the US are cheap that time of year (everybody else wants to go some place warm)and we can get from Glasgow to Belfast on Easyjet for around 35 pounds each. But is this a sure thing, 'cause I think I'd better book soon. Those Easyjet bargain fares go fast.

Really, I though EasyJet was the way to go and 35 pounds sounded pretty reasonable. There is a deal that includes bus from Glasgow and Ferry and it is also around 35 pounds, but takes a long time. Are there other airlines to try? I only know Easyjet.

Fib, I've been actually thinking of this one as a go, since my ancestors come from Newtonards, but I can't seem to find any Aer Lingus flights out of Baltimore (BWI) and I really hate NY. I will be checking on Dulles (DCA) but even that is a major hassle. If you have any info on cheap flights out of the DC/Baltimore area let me know. Also I would be interested in splitting a rental car out of Dublin and back if you know of anyone going that way.

Say hi to Ella from me!

Try this site http://www.sidestep.com . They have plenty of options from BWI to Dublin although they aren't direct and I didn't see any Aer Lingus. Belfast is a lot closer to Portaferry, but the airfare is more expensive. Sidestep searches all the other travel websites and pulls in all the options. I've had very good results. Good luck.

There are NO restrictions on ANY one turning up,although it DOES tend to be Catters and their friends ! WE do of course get 'local' musicians joining in the sessions , and the hostel is open to all visitors to Portaferry , as are the pubs we play in !

Subject: RE: Loughstock 4-score (N. Irish meet)

Guests are absolutely and totally welcome. It's just a big session weekend, and the fact that some of the people who turn up frequent the Mudcat Cafe is an added bonus as we get to catch up with people we haven't seen for a while.

This year it's my birthday, so I'm bringing some of my mates along and they're not remotely into folk stuff.

For the benefit of anyone who hasn't been before and is unsure of the set-up: we'll amble to the pubs, have sessions... No formal organisation involved, and no song circles, or indeed tune circles. We want to play music and have songs in the mix too, but it's not some kind of enforced party-piece set up where everyone has to do a turn, hell no! It's just Irish-style sessions in pubs (i.e. the session set-up is Irish style where someone randomly starts a tune and others join in, or maybe someone sings a song, and these may not be Irish tunes or songs - we welcome all) and maybe a wee spot of dancing this year if I'm lucky as I'm really into the set dancing these days.

Guinness features largely.

We're still not sure if we'll be there, it's all dependant on a family party getting a venue, they've had to say they'll go for a weekend either side as well, so we really just can't say yet!

Here's hoping!

Fibs, Portaferry in Feb will be a model of temperate moderation! But I've just had a call from a guy in Fairbanks, and it's freezing there - the sun's still not quite making it up to the horizon. And it was ten below zero (celsius) in Banja Luka last Monday. We don't know we're born.... (Where you from, Maryrrf? Not Maine or some such, by any chance?)

I am from Virginia where it does get kind of cold sometimes but the skies are generally sunny and bright. I was kidding, guys, I know it's going to be cold and probably wet in Northern Ireland in February, and a lot of my friends think I'm nuts for going at such a time (they mostly head the other way - towards the Caribbean Islands or Mexico, and would only think of going to Ireland in Spring or Summer). But I am hoping Barholm is well heated and that there will be nice roaring fireplaces in some of the pubs. I have been in Scotland in February and am figuring N.I. would be much the same, climatewise at that time of year. Even though I'm a born and bred southern girl, I think I can handle it.

Russia has cut supplies to Bosnia (still -10C) as it hits -30C in Moscow. Very mild here in Sherwood Forest today - but an east wind would soon change that! Whatever - there will certainly be roaring fires in the Portaferry bars.

Hello All.

After a long silence, it comes as no suprise to know I won't be able to make it.Though I'd dearly love to be there. Many other factors have come into play this past year, such as number 1 daughter getting more and more TV work, having more and more performing arts classes, rehearsals etc. This has two effects; firstly monetary. Freja is talented and needs all the help a parent should be able to give at what ever the cost.Secondly, time... the number of nights and evenings and now days spent being taxi driver to and fro leave little time for other things, especially if Dawn is working on a different set in a different area. The above and the trip to ride the roller coasters the week after means it is impossible to be with you................. so

Fibs and Bassic, have a wonderful birthday celebration between you. My best wishes to all of you and have a really great time.

Cheers

Eric, you will be missed. I was hoping to hear - and learn - that rude song you do ("which one?", sez he). You make sure Freja hits the big time and looks after you in your old and decrepit age!
It's a pity there's people wot can't make it. Who the hell is going to lead us in Sarf Australia if the fragrant lard meister ain't there either?

My mates from Bristol will have to dress up as the missing Catters. They're already slightly bemused because when they phoned the hostel they were given the names of a pile of people they'd never heard of before. They don't quite know what to expect, except for my long-suffering beloved who has been to Portaferry and has been made to set dance, and has been subjected to entire mp3 players full of fiddle tunes. I'm suprised he's agreed to go!

(In case you'v forgotten, you met Pal at the Plaistow session with Kendall & Co a year or two ago.)

I should be arriving via Easyjet from Liverpool at 13.55 and will have to wait a couple of hours for John so if your friend has even more time to kill Peter perhaps she would like to look out for me - 5ft 1" with longish chestnut hair (and a "new" pensioner :( - it hurt to say that!)

Hope y'all have a ball.

I really meant to make it this year, but with work, family visits etc. didn't get my donkey in gear in time. Just as well, in the event, because Bean Pluiméara has been coughing up the occasional lung for several weeks now and wouldn't have been up for it.

Maybe we'll make it next year, before Loughstock turns into the alternative Willie Week and starts collapsing under its own weight.

Ok, here we go:

Thanks everyone for a lovely weekend!
Some people I want to say special thanks to:

- Kate for organizing the meeting
- Liz, Paul and Phoebe for their hospitality in London
- Khatt (spelling?) for organizing transport from London to Stansted and Belfast to Portaferry
- Gordon and Sheila for sharing the car with Khatt, Micca and me
- Sheila for driving us
- Kate and Gordon for letting us take part in their birthday party
- Khatt, Sheila, EmmaB, Sorcha, ... for preparing a lovely Sunday Dinch (*)
- the clean-up-after-the-dinch-team for guess what
- Micca for the black sheep - I will slaughter it tonight.
- all the musicians and singers for the songs and music
- the two ladies at Barholm for two great breakfasts
- the Portaferry Hotel receptionist for some feckin irish whiskey
- (might be continued when memory is fully restored)

--------------------------------------------------

Now, as requested, the words to the song I performed for Kate:

Sweet Kate who is Fibs

In Portaferry's fair city
where the girls are so pretty
I again set my eyes on sweet Kate who is fibs
As she plays on her fiddle
with a tune in the middle
Crying Guinness, more Guinness
For me, and right now!

More Guinness, more Guinness,
More Guinness, more Guinness,
Crying Guinness, more Guinness,
For me, and right now!

Now she is a nice person,
And sure it's no wonder
For so are her mother and father before
Both are here, with Kate in the middle,
who is holding her fiddle,
Crying Guinness, more Guinness
For me, and right now!

More Guinness, more Guinness,
More Guinness, more Guinness,
Crying Guinness, more Guinness,
For me, and right now!

Now she has a big party
For it's her thirtieth birthday
And Gordon has his fifty-eth as well.
So they both play on their fiddle
with a tune in the middle,
Crying Guinness, more Guinness
For us, and right now!

More Guinness, more Guinness,
More Guinness, more Guinness,
Crying Guinness, more Guinness,
For us, and right now!

-----------------------------------------

And now, as requested not to do ;-), a song especially for EmmaB (SCNR):

I've been a nice lady for many's the year
And I've spent all my time being lovely and dear,
But now I turn nasty, with malice in great store
And I never will play the nice lady no more.

And it's no, nay, never
No, nay, never, no more,
Will I play the nice lady,
No never, no more.

I went down to a B&B house I used to frequent,
Where John McKenzie his night was to spend.
I locked the door, and I slid the bolt tight,
Making sure the poor man would not get inside.

And it's no, nay, never
No, nay, never, no more,
Will I play the nice lady,
No never, no more.

I've got no bad conscience, and wouldn't know why,
As it was cold outside, so Giok wouldn't fry.
He slept in his car, much to his delight,
As he had a very comfortable night.

And it's no, nay, never
No, nay, never, no more,
Will I play the nice lady,
No never, no more.

--------------------------------------------------

I'll start work on the photos later this afternoon ...

Leadfingers is quite right - Mudcat certainly draws the cultures together, and it's always noticeable how well others do with English, while we English speakers (on the whole) make such a poor fist of their languages....

In one respect, however, Mudcat is curiously one-dimensional - particularly for a forum conceived to propogate folk and blues:- as far as I have seen so far, in Europe and America, we've all got white faces.

As one of those who pefers tunes to songs, I have to admit the singing was pretty good, not least the woman from Newcastle (Co Down). Mooman pulled off the rare feat of accompanying a song to splendid effect with merely a bodhran - lending support to the few of us who claim that the bodhran is a musical instrument. And Liam was the living proof that a heavy night can make the voice grow stronger.

Who was the guy who did a song-cum-recitation in Fiddlers on Sunday afternoon?

Peter, speaking of bad English, shouldn't that read "while we English speakers make such a poor fist of our language"? ;-)

The song plus recitation guy was (iirc) Mudcat member 42 (don't remember real life name ...)

We do have at least one black member in Azizi, we have an Australian Aboriginal member in Hilda Fish, so we're not totally monochrome.
I think the person to whom you refer who did the song/recitation was Chris from just north of Belfast, a fine singer. He is in one of my photo's on the report thread so you can confirm my guess or not.

Currently (and I suspect for some time to come) there is also one very red-faced catter recently returned from Portaferry and, to avoid any more 'thread creep' of the 'hip-op' kind, I confess to accidentally locking Giok out of his B&B on Saturday night and apologize (once more) for forcing him to spend the night in his car.

Sorry Em, but the song challenge started before we left Portaferry.

(to tune of "Oh Dear what can the matter be")
Chorous
Oh dear what can the matter be
poor old Giok locked out of the B&B
slept in the car all thanks to Emma B
who didnt know he was there

the First NOT to come in was Giok McKenzie
Who found the door locked and went into a Frenzy
The car was a compact not a Mercedes Benzy
and nobody knew he was there

Giok stopped off at Devlins for a cuppa tea
and sat for a minute to look at the sea
the B&B door was shut tight as the road at Drumcree
and Nobody Knew he was there

Next day Giok was not very merry
overnight in the car in cold Portaferry
Not even a beer can to use as a jerry
and not very comfy at all

A quick HI to those new friends I met at Portaferry, although I was only able to drop in for a few hours on Sunday. This has got to be the first time I have posted on Mudcat for a couple of years. Thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and sorry I couldn't stay longer. Now I'm back I'll keep in touch a wee bit more often.

I enjoyed singing/reciting THE ROARING BABY. First time I'd done it in quite a few months - it remains one of my fabourites and I'm glad it has raised a smile.

Thanks again for the craic.

It was great seeing you, Chris - So glad you could make it! Your singing was in fine form, just as good as ever. I had a difficult trip back to the US - got caught in a huge snowstorm and had to sleep on a cold floor at Newark airport overnight. It was worth it, though. I really enjoyed Portaferry and will try and make it next year, too. Geoff and Mom send their regards.
