Record Lady or similar site?

Am looking for updated information or way to access The Record Lady site. Hope it is not totally lost. Also other downloadable Real Audio Sites of Country and Folk Music. Thanks in advance for your help. Jim

Real Audio is not my cup of tea, unless you know of an easy way to download the files in the background. There is a complicated manual hack, but it's a lot of futzing around, and some sites seem to be able to stop that.

I prefer direct links to mp3 files.

Hi, ho, Silver -
If you use our Filter and look for Record Lady and set the age back, you'll see that Rose the Record Lady was shut down by the Copyright Cops. It's unlikely that she'll be able to return.

Try the United States Library of Congres "Way Back Machine."

You will only get "captured" slices from past sample dates but it is better than null.

ANYTHING (good, bad, embarassing) you have EVER posted onto the "Internet" is available, and archived somewhere. (along with e-mails, addresses, URL portals, and with connections to "alias identities.") Not paranoia, just confirmed fact, recognized over a decade ago.

My files are full of letters NEVER sent....when you realize that some undergraduate psychology student may choose to do a computer assisted "analysis" of gargoles...(since the field is smaller than gonzales, or gargoyles)....you tend to temper the tongue.

WAYBACK MACHINE http://www.archive.org/web/web.php

Hope that it helps,

Sincerely,

New stuff only, but .mp3's are embedded in the top-20 lyrics pages and these show up in your temporary internet folder if you have that set to keep things for a bit. Norton flagged a piece of adware there among the stuff I went through, but nothing's really free anywhere.

The only real way to get a lot, now that The Record Lady is kaput, is to ask in newsgroups.. maybe alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.country

If you are not familar with newsgroups, or your ISP doesn't carry them, there are services like Giganews that you can buy time on....

(I got most of what The Record Lady had 5-6 years ago, when the getting was good. The copyright police sure overdo their zealousness)

BTW, the Wayback Machine has now blocked the Record Lady site contents. The Copyright Police/Pirates are sure thorough... I think of them as a sort of Pirate too, you know... The original Artists don't get any extra benefit, it all goes to the Corporate Profits, which is why new types of 'Copyright' systems have now sprung up.

And it's interesting how 30 year old Pop/Rock Top 10 recordings are still pushed at full price (AUD$30) - and 'how the artists are forced to renegotiate a lower rate when a 'reissue/compilation' is made...

You can always try AltaVista's audio search. Type in the name of the song you're searching for.

Similar real audio download sites. Good luck and good listening.
www.beau-dacious.addr.com/
www.rhs51.com/menu2.htm
These sites aren't all country but do offer some choices and a mix of old favorites.

I use the two sites cyberfriend mentioned and burn cds from my downloads. I also have several cds burned from the Record Lady's site. Sure do miss her. I use Streambox Ripper v2.009 to convert the Real Audio to MP3 before burning.

The Record Lady had a lot of great links as well to old country sites. Does anyone have them saved and if so would they post them here?

The Record Lady was not shut down by the "copyright cops". She shut it down herself because she couldn't afford to keep the site of without financial help. She asked, and asked, and asked for donations, but no one would help. So she shut it down. It was NOT a copyright issue.

While Guest may be correct, the reason given at the time the Record Lady's site was shut down was threats concerning copyrights.

Does anyone have a way of sending me some of the songs that used to be on her site by a man named Roland "The Yodeler" Bolduc? He was a part of her collection and I am his grandson.

   Sincerely,
   Zack.

I checked archive.org to see if they had any Roland Bolduc recordings..no luck.

Keep popping this thread back up when it gets low on the list for a few days, Zack. Sometimes it takes a while to catch the right eyes.

Good luck,
M

Glad to see you're back to check, Zack P. I have sent out a few queries to people here who might possibly be able to help.

I also looked in several likely places and had no luck. (Not yet, anyway!)

In the meantime, do what Melissa says. Every couple of days, give this thread a boost back to the top. Sooner or later, it's bound to be seen by someone who has what you want.

Hi, Zack-
I didn't get the e-mail.
Be sure to put something distinctive in the subject line, so it doesn't look like Spam - putting the work "Mudcat" or "song" in the title is a good idea, something specific.

Zack--you might get better response if you start a new thread
with the specific request....including your grandpa's name.

Good luck, and if you should like to join the mudcat, you can
share personal messages with other members. Glad you found this
site, and I hope you will get to hear Roland "The Yodeler" Bolduc,
thanks to the mudcat members.

Anyone who misses Rose may like to try Nancy instead.

As Leon Redbone says, "She ain't Rose, but she ain't bad, and Rose ain't here".

That looks like a useful site for searching down stuff, but the essence of Rose (and Nancy) is just the joy of retrieving old music and actually listening to it.
I always hated Rose's use of .ram files - which are really just a link to the original file. Nancy uses wavs so you actually download the file, rather than just a link to it. The quality seems very good too. Bless her.

Rose originally had 2 links...one to the .ram, and one to the .ra file, so you had an easy choice. When traffic got heavy, she changed the access plan to ease strain on the bandwidth .
Nancy's site looks interesting, but weighted toward more current 'country' music, whereas Rose had mostly the older stuff. I will browse thru Nancy and see what is there.

Thanks, Giovanni.

"weighted toward more current 'country' music"

I agree, but in my search for the whole Hank W catalogue I found several tracks new to me. Still some classic tracks missing though!

If you mean classic tracks of Hank W specifically, there is a huge list here of recordings posted in 'usenet' (newsgroups)....and clicking the > arrow at the bottom shows even more.

(this is not a download site, just a listing of what is there, but it may give you some info on what can be obtained)
