Lyr Add: Finnegan's In Again (Creamer/Hickey/Joyce

Subject: Finnegan's In Again
From: Leeder

I'm looking for a stage-Irish song that my mother used to sing (NOT "Finnegan Begin Again", to forestall blind alleys). The chorus bgins:

Finnegan,
For the love of Mike he's in again,
Now the trouble will begin again,
Now that Finnegan's around.

I remember the melody and random bits of lyrics. I haven't found it on an internet search.

I didn't find lyrics, but I found this place. The guy has Edison rolls and will record and send to you if you e mail him. Alternate title seems to be There's the Devil of a Time. Scroll down, or use the Find button.

A song from my great grandmothers victrola, but alas I've never been able to find out much about it. I have the lyrics fairly close, but would like to confirm. I always get a good response whenever I perform it as it is not the typical american irish fair.

Sure it was old Erins ball old Erins ball the 17th of March
Everything was bright and gay for Irish people sons and daughters
Sure the Dougans, and the Cougans and the Clancy's all were out
By and by the fights began when they heard Murphy shout

Sounds fairly typical Irish-American to me! I think there's a version around here somewhere..

Maybe not - the obvious searches don't turn it up anyway. Nothing to do with beards, of course.

There was an old man named Michael Finnegan,
He grew whiskers on his chin, agin.
The wind came out and blew them in agin,
poor old Michael Finnegan, begin agin.

There are more, that's the only verse that I can remember. Aren't you glad?

Looks like this would be a good song to add to the collection called Lyr Add: Irish songs about balls, wakes, soirees. I'll add a link there to this thread.

A complete mp3 file of this recording is available at http://www.aardvarkmastering.com/edison.htm. Here's my transcription.

FINNEGAN'S IN AGAIN (THERE'S THE DEVIL OF A TIME)
Words, Henry Creamer; music, Billy Hickey and Billy Joyce ©1924.

1. Sure it was Old Erin's Ball, in Erin's Hall, the seventeenth of March.
Ev'rything was bright at least for Ireland's peaceful sons and daughters.
Sure the Doogans and the Coogans and the Clancys all were out.
By and by, the fight began and they heard Murphy shout:

CHORUS: It's Finnegan,
For the love of Mike, he's in again.
Soon the trouble will begin again
Now that Finnegan's around.
Go tell the doorman, Flanagan
For to call up Doctor Brannigan.
Telephone him that old Finnegan
Is in again
And he's runnin' around in his bare skin again.
Hooligan,
Try and get the neighbors cool again.
Stand in front of Miss O'Toole again
For the sake of auld lang syne.
Can you see him, Mrs. Cassidy?
Flanagan,
Tell the leader of the band again
To play off again, on again.
Finnegan's in again,
And there's the divil of a time.

[INSTRUMENTAL INTERLUDE: THE IRISH WASHERWOMAN]
[CHORUS]

2. Peace reigned at Old Erin's Ball in Erin's Hall the seventeenth of March.
Ev'rything was running fine. Without the wine, the folks were merry.
Sure Bedelia and Cecilia entered in the jig and reel.
In the midst of all the joy, they heard Cecilia squeal:

[CHORUS]

[As sung by Robert Denning on Edison Diamond Disk 51294-L. The B-side of this record (51294-R) was THE LITTLE WOODEN WHISTLE WOULDN'T WHISTLE.]

Sure but you're a clever bunch of Micks. Thats the one. Thankyou thankyou.

"I have it as "Everything was bright and gay for Irish people sons and daughters" and " Did you see it Mrs. Cassidy"

What a great resource this site proves to be.

Thanks again
