THE LAMBETH WALK

Music: Noel Gay
Words: Douglas Furber & Arthur Rose

(F) Any (Bb) time you're (F) Lambeth way,
Any (D7) evening, (Gm) Any day,
You'll find us (Gm7) all (C7)
Doin' the Lambeth (F) Walk (C7) Oi!

Ev'ry little Lambeth gal,
With her little Lambeth pal,
You'll find 'em all
Doin' the Lambeth walk.

(Dm7) Everything (G7) free and (C) easy,
(G7) Do as you darn well (C) pleasey,
(Am) Why don't you (D7) make your (C) way there,
(Dm7) go (G7) there, (Gm7) stay (C7) there.

Once you get down Lambeth way,
Ev'ry evening, Ev'ry day,
You'll find yourself
Doin' the Lambeth Walk. Oi!

Note: The Oi! Is shouted, not sung, with GREAT enthusiasm and accompanied by an upward thrust of the thumb of either hand (as if in hitch-hiking)

(I hope I did this right!)

Malvina Reynolds wrote the song about the Lambeth (Ontario) children. Lambeth isn't far from London, Ont. I stop at a Tim Horton's there when I go between Detroit and Stratford. I've never asked about the trees and the kids.

I take it that the message above is a request for the bass guitar part of Lambeth Walk.
Anyone?

From Wikipedia:

" 'The Lambeth Walk' is a song from the 1937 musical Me and My Girl (with book and lyrics by Douglas Furber and L. Arthur Rose and music by Noel Gay). The song takes its name from a local street once notable for its street market and working class culture in Lambeth, an area of London, England.

"The tune gave its name to a Cockney dance first made popular in 1937 by Lupino Lane. The story line of the original show concerns a Cockney barrow boy who inherits an earldom but almost loses his Lambeth girlfriend."

The article goes on to say that the song gave rise to a dance fad that was roundly condemned by the Nazis, which I suppose is a good enough reason to sing it and dance it.

The Lambeth Walk is mentioned in a Nero Wolfe story involving an enigmatic Balkan princess.

You can hear a nifty piano-roll version of it here:

It's fun to listen to its retro musical features.

I was once in a production of "Me and My Girl" - loved doing it, especially The Lambeth Walk. And there is a street called Lambeth Walk, very close to Lambeth Palace, the London residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury.
But it probably owes at least some of its story to the earlier comic operetta, "Ruddigore", by Gilbert & Sullivan, aka "The Witch's Curse" - first performed in 1887.
Both M&MG and Ruddigore include a scene where the ghosts of the ancestors of the family step down from the portraits on the walls: an interesting scene to conjure up for any producer/director!

Emma Thompson played the female lead some years ago
in a revival of 'Me and My Girl',
and her character required her to be part of
the 'Lambeth Walk" which is a big production number.
