BS: Clearwater, Fl advice please

Hi folks!
I have found the Mudcat has been an excellent resource for all types of information, I wonder if someone can help me with this:

On Wednesday my wife and No1 son are going from England to Clearwater in Florida for a month. good eh? The problem is that neither of them drive. They were going to rely on buses to get them around but a search on the internet hasn't found any services in the area.
Is this because there aren't any buses? If this is the case, can anyone suggest alternatives, other than taxis which could prove rather expensive.

Thanks loads,

John

John - I'll try to get back to you soon. I grew up around there many years ago. If you don't hear from me soon send me a PM and I'll get it at the office on Monday.

Will you actually be on the beach ? Where will you be staying ?

Try here. There is a link to "transportation", and there seems to be at least some bus service.

It looks like there is a link to the Chamber of Commerace tourism section - I would think they could e-mail you a bus schedule.

If they like museums I might suggest an excellent Salvador Dali museum in St Petersburg. And further south in Sarasota more more traditional art they will find the Ringling family { of circus fame } have an excellent museum.

And you might find some music info at www.foff.org

Don't forget to use sunscreen. Lots of it. Even if you are sitting in the shade.

Stand under the "bus stop" sign and you will soon see a bus. Clearwater is filled with poor people who use public transportation.

This time of year you're likely to be caught by sudden, bucket-load squalls or rainshowers.

Caveat pedestrian.

Nonsense: I live here, and this is the driest month of the year. Come on down. PSTA buses run up and down the beach all day. You'll find some Mudcatters at the Saturday morning bluegrass jams at the Bluegrass Shop, 66th St. in St. Petersburg: www.thebluegrassshop.com.

According to the historical averages on this page November holds the record one of the wettest months in the region, historically, around 30 cm. But on average you are right -- actually I was thinking of the July-August period, I guess.

But you're in the region, so, of course, I defer to your local knowledge.

Amoa, that spike for November indicates a record "rainfall". November is one of the two driest months of the year.

The record rainfall is what made that particular November a wet month, obviously. Sorry I confused late summer with fall. It's me age, you see......I havebeen caught in a number of Saint Petersburg squalls, once out in the middle of Tampa Bay that I had to anchor through, very wild but short. The dates of the deluges just got scrambled in the mists of ancient history. I think there was a stegosaurus involved in one of them...

Actually - LOTS of dinosaurs can be found in Clearwater. They are known by several different names such as "Snowbirds" and "Yankees".

Please excuse my extreme rudeness and tardiness in not replying sooner to everyones replies to my cry for help.

My other half is now safely ensconced in Clearwater (On Top of the World) and is enjoying excellent weather....more excellent that Manchester, England anyway!

She has managed to get herself around the immediate locality very successfully using public transportation (she doesn't drive), now all she needs is a folk club!

Many thanks to all who have replied, especially Alice for her considerate PM!

Cheers,

John

All I know about Clearwater is that the Phillies used to have their spring training there. I don't know if they still do.

Aloha,
Mark

(That's a baseball team. Kind of like cricket, but comprehensible.)

I believe that Clearwater is near the stomping ground of Richard Gilewitz, guitarist, composer and great guy. I suggest you see if you can catch his act if at all possible.

We visited in Clearwater for just a week last March. I'll venture a couple of suggestions. You're just a few minutes from Honeymoon Island state park; go over, stroll the wooded trails, and walk out the sand spit. And, if you have any weakness for wildlife at all, try to get a few miles up the road to Homosassa Springs state park; we burned a mess of film before we knew it.
