20 new free downloads from El Greko

I have been tidying up my website and with the opportunity I uploaded the MP3s of 20 songs that never made it into the albums. The recordings are fairly rough - on my home kit, with minimal or no multitracking; but decent enough, I think.

Anyway - download to your heart's content from here

That is mighty gracious of you. I may just take a peak at what didn't make it onto the 4 CD's of yours that I have at hand.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

You getting rich, now you can afford to give it away?

:-)

Say, if you REALLY WANT to give it away...

The money, I meant, not the music!

hey, thanks, George! They are, indeed "decent enough"....made me a playlist already. (fast connection, too!)

Money?, why folks tell me there's TENS of dollars to be made in this business!

One of the wonderful things about George is that [for him] the music is far more important than the money.

Thanks George.

Q: How does a folk singer become a millionaire???

A: Start with two million.

George I have just spent a great afternoon listening to your tracks, wonderful stuff. I am still laughing at the lovely idea of all my troubles leaking out through my toes, oh if only that were true!
Thanks a million George.

I fixed the broken links to two of them (Sailor's lullaby & If you'd only seen her). Charley, I recommend the first of those to you.

Thanks Giok, nutty, BillD... I just thought the songs should be out there, not sitting in my computer...

Hey, thanks, George. I'm enjoying them very much. Were you not happy with these ... or did they just not 'fit' in with what you selected for your albums?

This is good news. I am looking forward to having time to listen when I have finished the current translation!

TBPL,
the reasons why they were not included vary. Some were just not strong enough for the albums (yet still good enough to sing in the club), others were too "samey" with ones already selected etc. And on some we just did not agree with the producer (Robb Johnson).

There are songs among them that I would still like to have recorded properly one day; a good example is "The cost of two cannon balls", which I would like to record with a duet (or trio) of female voices - without my voice. Any takers out there?

WOW!! Have listened to two, so far, and have them all downloaded. Thank you, SO MUCH!! I am going to be sure Night Owl hears "Innocent Katy." If you remember the Music Therapy thread, NO shared with us, her use of the autoharp to connect with someone like "Katy." She will love this song.

Your artistry on the guitar is gorgeous, as is your voice!!

Thanks, again,

katdelighted!!

I've got some time off from work the next couple of days and am going to enjoy this very much - spending time listening to the downloads on George's site. Being mostly interested in pure traditional stuff, I don't usually listen to singer-songwriters, but George is the exception. I listen to the CD I got at the Getaway all the time, and I found myself thinking "Well we've finally found a spokesperson for our generation" - he says it all so well and hits the nail on the head so many times. I think his song "Friends Like These" ought to be the theme song for the Getaway next year. Thank you, George, for writing songs that express what so many of us are experiencing and feeling - and for giving them out so freely!

Really enjoying these, thanks again.

I'd love to sing for you, however might have too much choir training for the lovely folk sound you have there. (I was singing Christmas Carols in the subway the other day and got mistaken for an OPERA singer several times!!! Yikes!) Let me know if you want me to give it a try though.

If the song is in the same range as the others you've made available, I wouldn't mind taking a crack at it. I have a lot of experience at harmonising and love to do so. Have to practice a bit, though, and it'd have to be via online means, i.e. email sound files, etc. Alba has a strong and very beautiful voice, maybe she's be iterested, too.

Wow - so many offers (I had some by PM as well)... Given the geographical issues, I suggest that people sing it in duets or trios (doesn't have to be accompanied) and send me a cassette/MP3/CD of it. Then I can pick one for the full studio treatment (I'd like it recorded in a proper studio eventually, and I'll pay for it, wherever it takes place). And - how about this - we can suggest it for inclusion in the next Mudcat CD, as an "exclusive" (i.e. it will not appear in any of my personal albums, the Mudcat CD will be the only way one can get hold of it). Just a thought...

For now, give it a try. Watch out for the harmony on the last line of the chorus, it's a weird one...(played in the key of D, the 4 chords for the last line go: F / C / A / D ) If you want the lyrics, PM me or email me through my website (link above) and I'll send them to you.

Of course there are two female Catters who already sing "The price of two cannonballs" and I hope we'll still be doing it for many seasons more. How about it Nessie? Still (almost) remember the worms. Shall we sock it to em again soon?

Oh! you meant to stand on the bricks! No I can get up that high, if I take a while to warm up the voice properly. As my dad used to say about high sopranos - well she can get up to 'p'...

Ahhhhhhhhh! CAMELS!!!!! Mind your thumbs!

Naughty George!

Thanks George, I've got to admit that I don't listen to many singersongwriters but having heard some of your songs before I thought that I might enjoy these and I am.
My only problem is that I don't really normally download music, I'm listening to them one by one via your Web site so can anyone please tell me how I can download them onto my PC, or not as the case??

Carol,

"right-click" on the MP3 button (instead of the normal left-clicking); from the drop down menu select "Save target as...". It will bring up a window for you to select where to save it. Choose the location where you want it saved, and click "Save". Done.

Subject: RE: 20 new free downloads from El Greko

Robin,

it was the last entry in the paybook of those who died (and were buried) at sea, and would be deducted from the dead sailor's pay before it was handed over to his widow.

This was a practice recorded as being officially followed by the VOC (Dutch East Indies Co), but there is every reason to believe that the English East Indies Company also did it.

The song is about the womenfolk of a town seeing the merchantman on which their men sailed returning and wondering "will I be a widow tomorrow?" (i.e. when the ship docks and they learn the fate of their loved ones). Not at all uncommon - 30% crew losses on a single trip were regularly recorded.

I'm interested so as to gauge just how it related to the actual pay scale of the seamen.
