Great Grimsby Uk Music News

Subject: Great Grimsby Uk Music News
From: Tim theTwangler

Hi there world!
This is a thread primarily for the posting of up and coming musical
events in the Area of Great Grimsby on the south bank of the River Humber on the North East Coast of North East Lincolnshire in the United kindgom.
I would welcome any body wishing to post events that we might conceivably be able to attend, and listen to or even play at within reasonable traveling distance of our town.
Mrs Twangler and I have been constantly suprised by the number of truly talented musicians we have had the priviledge of hearing and meeting in this area in the last two years.
And overwhelmed by the freindly and generous nature of artists who actualy didnt really need to bother being so kind.
Enough of the groveling please add links to local Folk clubs,Venues, other websites+messageboards.
If you are artist who has a gig coming up in our area please let us know and someone will be adding the info to local community message boards and sites to let the folks know what the Folk is going on.

Beer and Broadsword are a perfect match.

This is a real chill out night
The 3 Guys are fun and generous with their time, always willing to chat or help out where they can.

A local message board to find the people you met in the pub last night in Grimsby.
Good place to ask what there is worth going to listen to at the weekend and arrange stuff with your musical mates.
Warning this board is frequented by nutters and the threads can be quite baffling at times.

Another localy run mesage board for the more sane and sanitary use of nice people.
Provided by the young ladies of Wild Wolds Women a Lincolshire based Quartet who primarily play Guitar,Piano/keyboards/accordion,Cello and whistles/Recorder/and squeexebox.
A lot of the materiel is their own but can turn their collective hand to almost anything.

Here be Monsters!!!!
Actualy its just a few local venues that have sing arounds and such, and as far as I know no websites.
The Tap and Spile Grimsby Host an open mic night and an un-pluged accoustic night both on a tuesday Find the number in the phone book and give them a call.
This venue also boasts a variety of performers throughout the year and is well worth getting in touch with.

The Lads of Cara are often to be found deplorably intoxicated at the Brocklesby Hunt at Goxhill.
Music starts around 2100 each wednesday but if you get there earlier get on with it yourself.

The Six Bells at Barrow on Humber Has a back room into which on a Tuesday evening are crammed a huge and vastly tallented array of people who set to and play beautiful music all night.
They are a great bunch and make a great sound.

At the Old Cons club in Bargate Grimsby,a local group of Irish Music enthusiasts hold their band Practice in the main room downstairs from 1930 untill 2100.
Then anyone is welcome to join in or take a turn.
The band are mostly still wearing L plates but once the serious group practice is over there is a lot of fun to be had. So any one who likes to do a bit of tuition would be welcome too.

The Grimsby Folk Club.
Only been here once and had warm welcome and they are a nice bunch of people.
We will return at the earliest opportunity as we had a bloomin good time.
I think the general idea is to have singers night one week and a guest the next but please check the website as dont need a load of folkies getting annoyed with me for giving out wrong info.

Ha so the mighty Les is fallable hehehe!
I am pleased you were wrong this once as would have gotten loads of ear ache from Mr and Mrs Rockhen otherwise.
Tonight tuesday the 29th is the night of accoustic culture at the Tap and Spile in Grimsby.
This is a singaround, you play were you sit ,or stand do one song and then the turn moves on.
The music is varied in style and un amplified.
The Tap audience has a very good Reputation for supporting and encouraging new performers and many stalwarts of the local music scene have played their first public performance there.
It is a pub however and although the juke box is definatly turned orf the pool table in the annex is still in use.
If you want to go and play for the first or umpteenth time ,or just go listen to and meet some bloody nice people come along.
If you really need a seat get there early as it is a popular night usualy.
Regulars include Woja Coult ,Roger Beard,Fast eddy weeks,Richard Papps,Mark Cambell,Vintage,Bob sticky and Colin. The Driftnet Poets, and loads of others ,will one of them be you?

Forgotten name of it all ready but superb beer.
Now the music was as promised varied but all excellent and enjoyable
Even i sang and didnt get stuff thrown at me.
Rocky borrowed me hat but Mrs Twangler reckons it will shrink back to about the right size eventualy

Tim,don't know if it'd be quite Folky enough for you, but the title track of my "Away For The Day" CD is based around my childhood memories of going for day trips with the family to the...er,.beach at Cleethorpes, which is right next door to you, isn't it?. As a matter of fact, the sleeve features a shot of my sister and I on such a day out at old Cleggy. You can have a look and a listen at my site if you'd like.
All this talk of Humberside is getting me a little homesick; I'm originally from Scunthorpe but I've been living over here in Florida for over twenty years now, so forgive the misty-eyed sniffling and over-nostalgic rambling. Have a pint for me. Cheers then, Steve R.

"Can you remember the old outdoor Swimming pool?

How could I forget it? It was always bloody freezing; took an hour or so to work your way in, all for the pleasure of feeling that hint of slime on the bottom as it squelched between your toes. Lovely. I have a few photos somewhere.

"If you ever come over to the land of grey skies and grey waters give us a shout and will buy you a pint"

Now you're talking! Actually I'd love the chance to play over in England again; it's been so long. All I have to do is talk the missus into a Humberside holiday and try and incorporate a gig or two. Hell, an open mic would suit me fine. It'd be lovely just to play. I did get a spin recently on Cleethorpes lad Dave Evardson's South Bank Show on Radio Britfolk, but that's about as close as I've come for years.
So you worked on the Railway? My Grandad did his 30 years as a shunter. I still have the silver watch they gave him. It's all documented in the track "The Golden Age Of Steam" on my CD. If you fancy a listen to the full track rather than just a clip, you can go to Soundclick at the link below. Help yourself!

Thanks Les,
I Havent been there at all,my mate Kiwi Di is the big blues enthusiast and talked us into going to the Blues of the month club Blues Festival wich was about hte last thing that was at the Queens in Cleethorpes.
I will ask her if she has been and see what she reckons to a trip over there.
Has anyone else got anything to report about this venue?
It is such a great experience to go to music in a venue where the owner /operater has a genuine interest in the music as well as the profits. Nearly always guarentees a great event.
And without any thought of comfy chairs at this fridays Market Raison FC I would say that our Les is a prime example of this.

Well thank you kindly theer out Tim. Better make sure you have comfortable chairs for having said that :-)

I have been on several occasions. It is always very well attended. Graham has put a lot of effort into making these gigs a great success.

You just turns up and grabs the best seats you can and just enjoy some very good bands in yer face. It isn't accoustic. The bar is open.

My only issue, and the real reason I don't go anymore, is that it is a smoking venue. I don't have a problem as such with people smoking, but having survived smoke related cancer, I prefer to stay away from smoking venues

As a lapsed.reformed smoker I wish the bloody things had been totaly banned in the four years I had stopped 'cos then I wouldnt have been able to be so stupid as to get hooked again eeerrrr
Would have been still as stupid but couldnt have got any is what I mean
errrrr I think !Freaky 'fil pf broadsword fame gas attended an open mike at the Market Hotel in Grimsby and said it was great fun very loud and included a full drum kit.
He did try and explain the set up to me but was slightly jolly at the time and didnt take it all in.
However he says future and possibly regulay events are being planned so will be on here asap

outing
Dick is a highly regarded multi instrumentalist and very excellent Guitariste.
He has recently appeared at the market Raison folk club where he actually followed a french/geardie lady called (oh crikey help me out here les!) Flossy ?
This was just as well because she was a very hard act to follow and I cant realy think of anyone better to do it.
Gig starts at eight

Blimey another year gone.

Market Rasen Folk Club holds its annual Christmas Evening at Faldingworth Village Hall
On Friday December the 16th 2005.
Entrance £5 which includes Supper halfway through the evening.
The Bar will be open, so please don't bring your own drinks.
Doors open 7:00pm for 7:30pm start.

The Spotlight Guests are DaCapo
The group has a wide ranging repertoire from traditional ballads and accapella pieces to the up to date songs written by group members. The instruments range from Tin whistle, Guitar, Cello and Mandolin to percussion instruments such as the Jembi Bodhran and home made boot stick.
DaCapo is a folk group which formed 14 years ago when Dr. Jim Ward retired from teaching at DeAston School and a surprise party was organised for him reuniting members of all the DeAston Folk Groups from the previous 2 decades. Hence the name DaCapo, a musical term meaning back to the beginning. Our much loved and respected founder Jim is not able to appear with DaCapo at the moment due to ill health and the group have made a CD for the Local Alzheimer's Society in his honour these are available from any group member as well as China Choice in Market Rasen and The Village Store at Osgodby.

DaCapo are supported by
Stitherum
Gwenda & Terry Cater
Jane Kitchen

The music theme is Christmassy and there will be Carols which everybody will be encouraged to join in.

WHo knows what will happen but ai dare say there will be many of the regulars in attendance and some suorises so bring your poems instruments and songs to the Tap and Spile next Tuesday.
I think I have mentioned the format previously you play where you sit stand or lay and the music goes around clockwise or widershins until the landlord has made emough or had enough and chucks us out.
Is fun and freindly bunch all abilities welcomed and applauded.
If you aer a bit shy about coming to the big town we will find you somewhere at our table to park your 'arris and may not even nick your beer while you are singing.

Another great night in prospect at Faldingworth home of the Excellent Market Raisen Folk club.
Friday the 13th in the village hall.
Loadsa great music will be played and for £3 there cant be any better value and still be a quiet listener freindly environment.

On sunday there is another chance for us non Proffessional players and singers to have a go at the Spiders web in Grimsby at the Grimsby Folk Club singers and players night.
the range of music is wide but very much folk!
