BS: Wearing the kilt!!!

27 Nov 05 - 06:29 PM (#1614994)
Subject: BS: Wearing the kilt!!!
From: Juan P-B

About three weeks ago I achieved a lifelong ambition and bought a kilt - Just the kilt! Not the full regalia.

Most people seemed nonplussed and amused at a bloke with an obviously sassenach accent wearing the plaid.

One bloke in a pub had the decency to ask (on behalf of his mates) "Why the kilt?" - He (and his pals) were happy with "Because it's comfortable"

I wore it at a car-boot sale this morning and most people who said anything at all were impressed that I wasn't freezing to death - I suppose because it's wool! They were desperately cold in their denims

I wore it to a gig this afternoon in Oxfordshire and got a fairly positive response from a bunch of pub regulars.

The only negativity was at a 'choke 'n' puke' (McDonald's) near Didcot when a neanderthal in a car yelled across the car park "Hey mate! (I wasn't his mate) Why you wearing a skirt"

I yelled back that I couldn't hear what he was saying with his engine running so he actually turned it off and asked again - I said I couldn't hear him with his engine running and he told me that he'd turned it off..... so I told him I couldn't hear what he was saying with his engine running and he said......

I actually got him to yell 5 times that he HAD turned his engine off and eventually he walked over to me to tell me right up close.

I then said - "What was it you were shouting" and he'd forgotten! Even his boyfriend (I suppose it was his boyfriend) couldn't remember either - Isn't it worrying that these primates can reproduce

I think I shall enjoy wearing my kilt even more now

I think you should get an agent and organise a world tour.

Perhaps you should hitch round Ireland like that bloke did with a fridge.

I'm sure a man in a kilt would be heir to a thousand interesting tales.

Each year in the fall, a gal friend gets to abandon her hubby for the day, & she & I (&whoever else) drive a couple hours to what we refer to as the "Men in Kilts Festival." It is actually a Scottish Festival & Games, and there are at least 3 pipe bands & lots of kilts. Some women wear kilts there, too. I don't think we'd have nearly as much fun if there weren't lots of men wearing kilts.

My daughter's chum wore a kilt to high school. He liked the kilt so much that, on occasion, he wore skirts as well. One day a group of louts beat the snot out of him in the school foyer, in front of the office windows and in full view of the security camera. They didn't like his kilt.

Afterwards, the teachers told him to stay away from the louts from then on and not to wear his skirts or kilt to school. Guess they didn't like kilts either.

FWIW I often get asked why I wear red - "Because I am a poser" usually ends that and we talk about - whatever.

Only once have I had the one to one with a really persistant stranger and I said "I am conducting a survey into tolerance"

That worked very effectively.

(because I want to and because I am a poser - that's the real reason)

Guy was wearing a utillikilt at the Farmers' Market here in Idaho this past summer (customer, not a vendor). Let's just say that if he was looking for comment he didn't find any; folks are actually pretty tolerant around here (unless you are a pedophile and then they became very, very intolerant).

I only saw him wear this once or twice and then he switched back to jeans or shorts.

No one is less tolerant than a group of teenagers whose idea of non-conformity is an unreconizeable lable on the backside of their jeans. I also don't suspect that many recognized themselves in the Lord of the Flies from English class in previous years.

Painful lesson to learn on exactly how far you can go if you decide it might be a hoot to push the envelope, although it does make it easier to understand just how the Nazis flourished during Germany's dark days.

The 'obvously sassenach accent' is a bastardisation of my native 'Geordie', married to a Birkenhead lass for 12 years then married to a Dorset girl for 23 - In between is a career in the RN living for about 12 years in Cornwall' moi luvvrrrrrr!!

Love your response Mr Red! I AM a poser!

Ernest! I can't afford the full regalia - If I could I'd dress like Kenneth McKellar

Today someone (I thought she was a lady) asked me what tartan I was wearing. "McDonald!" says I - "Oh!" says she, "Where do you keep your quarter-pounder?"

I now have two kilts (McD & Black Watch) with an 'Anderson' on order. Not too keen on the sporran though - the tassles clatter as I walk and if it slips down it bangs me in the nuts.

But I shall persevere - I love the thing to bits and can't wait for my first visit to Scotland in one

And...... Thanks for your comments - Hope to see some of you at Fareham this coming Easter

Hasta

From: Big Al Whittle

why's that your ladyship?

do we really want all that sort of thing flopping about in public? Imagine getting out of a Ford fiesta in a high wind.

I always think it strange that you never see naked men in films. Actually its the male sex organ which is tabu. For example in Jurassic Park, you never saw a dinosaur's willy. its a cross species tabu.

did dinosaurs have penises, did they wear kilts? All this is hidden in the mists of time.

Perhaps it was actually like that and nobody ever saw a dinosaur's sex organ, not even the other dinosaurs - and this is why they died out. They were just really modest when they got out of Ford Fiestas and it contributed to their decline.

I believe dinosaurs probably had cloacas - and thus no penis. But why wouldn't they have worn kilts? At least utilikilts - handy pckets and much easier to get on and off without opposable thumbs.

No Skirt!! I wore a flower-patterned frock and high heels once with itty-bitty bows in my beard & 'tache - Alison Davies & Iwere 'doing' "Sisters" from "Holiday Inn" for a charity gig - That was enough for going in drag - The kilt is as close as I'll get

The drummer from Oysterband always wears a grey kilt on stage and looks dead cool - I suppose I'll be that cool one day

I love wearing kilts and wear casual kilts when doing chores or running errands.

I also wear them while performing. I had one woman who came up and asked me several times what I was wearing under the kilt. Each time I gave her the same answer. She said she didna believe me. While on break between sets, while speaking with another couple, she walks up to me and lifts the kilt, gives a little shriek and drops the kilt, and runs back to her table. I guess you know who was the object of my jokes for the rest of the night.........

I occasionally wear a kilt - not a utilikilt, but made of denim, by Robert Pel of R Kilts, Stratford, Ontario. It's cut more like a traditional kilt than a utilikilt and looks a lot better. One day I hope to get a traditional kilt, perhaps in the St. David tartan, since I have no Scottish blood that I am aware of.

I would never have had the guts to wear a kilt when I was a teenager. Now that I am 48, I don't give a damn. I've never had any rude comments.

I frequently wear my kilt in public. I go to Scottish Country Dances, and other Scottish events regularly, and I perform in a Scottish orchestra, the Strathspey and Reel Society of New Hampshire. So I am frequently seen in restaurants and pubs, and pumping gas, etc, in my kilt. (see member photos.) Usually people don't say anything, but I have had several "nice kilt, man!" from teenagers, especially back when Braveheart was popular. I think that if you look comfortable and relaxed in your kilt, you won't get as many odd reactions.

I took it to be cleaned recently, at a local establishment. The bill said "ladies red pleated skirt" and when they pressed it they messed up my pleats, so I am going to have to redo the pressing or else get my resident kiltmaker to do it for me.

You've got to check out "Bravehearts - men in kilts" then.

Contains some nice reasoning as to why trousers/trews/pants/bifurcated garments are more suitable for women, physiologically speaking, and why kilts/skirts/robes are more suited to men!   I found it fascinating (although perhaps the macho pictures of Sean Connery and Mel Gibson in kilts were part of the attraction)...

My brother used to do Scottish Social Dancing and his group were doing the display set for the opening of the local SSD Associations christmas do. My brother traditionally goes 'commando' when wearing his kilt and forgot all about having to do the display set. They turned up to the do. My brother realises he hasn't any underwear (apparently it's bad form to flash the judges etc.) and has to cadge a pair off someone else. The only person willing to give up their spare undies was a girl. My brother performed the opening set wearing red frilly knickers and a determined grin. Apparently one of the judges complimented him on his choice of underwear later on.........

Weelittledrummer - I think a lot of men look really good in kilts. Men have good looking legs too, why should men have all the fun of appreciating the human form? The 'hamster' problem can be amusing too.......   :)

My eldest daughter's uni pals think I'm supercool anyway as I'm (not in any particular order) super-hairy, Father Christmas, Ace folk & rock guitarist AND a walking 60's & 70's retro guitar archive - so they think the kilt is probably gonna be the next big 'must have' (after the Nano Pod)

I am thinking of having a new one made in the Irish Diaspora tartan. Great looking pattern.

It's like a kilt with pockets. They makes sense, but they aren't traditional, and un-subtle pockets aren't appropriate on formal attire. The also can add pounds to a guy's legs. For the traditionalist, it might be best to have a utility sporran with little loops to stick your hammer and screwdriver, flashlight and spare chanter in.

Dead Horse! I am actually a 'Wilson' and my clan tartan is the Gunn - However the options on the kilts I had were about 10 tartans which included the camouflage & black.

I went for Black Watch first as it ia a beautiful pattern with a magnificent history. The 2nd choice was 'Anderson' as it has the same beauty but is that lovely bloue base - Unfortunately they had run out of that tartan so I opted for McDonald (least amount of red in it) and ordered an Anderson when he gets the material.

To get a kilt made in my 'home' colours will cost about £150 - The ones I've bought are from a 'one-day' offer on e-bay - £25 for a 5yd handmade kilt sounded good to me and they are brill! - I am now also giving the bloke who makes them guitar lessons over the internet - for a discount consideration on me 'Anderson' kilt

My brother-in-law wears his Anderson on occasion and you're right - it is a lovely blue. I'm originally a McGregor and like the red tartan, my middle sister had 4 'flower girls' in black watch tartan dresses at her wedding and when my eldest sister married she made her friends dresses, 1 in rust and the other in lemon to perfectly co-ordinate with her new husbands' Macpherson Kilt.
As a child I remember the pipe bands arriving pre Highland Games and tuning up outside our house before marching with that 'certain swagger' to the Games Park. It's wonderful memory. Thanks.
Keep yer kilt on and enjoy whatever part of Scotland you get to and soon! May I recommend Bridge of Allan, Callander and the 'Trossachs'.

How do we manage without tights in the winter?

It's only really your knees that are exposed. Thick, woolen kilt hose, and 8 yards of very thick woolen cloth keep you plenty warm enough. It's a much warmer getup than tights, according to various women. Unfortunatly, we can't take them off in the summer!

Plus, not being stupid enough to just stand about in the cold helps. One of the Highland dances, the Reel of Tulloch was supposedly written when the minister was late for Kirk ( church ), and the people standing around started dancing to keep warm. It works, as it's a very tiring dance. Fun though.

I don't understand utilikilts. Kilts have a pocket, it's called a sporran. if you really can't do without the phone, multitool, etc do the sensible thing and put them on a belt, where they won't spoil the lines of thr kilt.

That wasn't porridge, Dead Horse. Kilts are useful for what our American cousins call "comfort breaks" simply kneel with the knees slightly spread, preferably on grass, and you can relieve yourself in comfort and polite company. The first time I saw my uncle do this I thought he was adjusting the kilt to be on the knee.

How do you manage without tights in winter?

Before setting out on a winter journey, the Pembina Indians put out their fires and sit in the. cold in order to accustom themselves to it. One day, when the thermometer was below zero, an Indian came to see me, wearing only leggings', and, under his blanket, a thin cotton shirt. Looking at his bare chest, I said, "I should think you would freeze." He smiled and pointing to my face, exclaimed, "Face not freeze,--Indian all face"

I don't wear'em because they are an accurate representation of Irish garb. I wear them because I love the way they look. And I love running around with no underwear on. And I love the reaction I get from women. And I love screwing with the terminally insecure and anal retentive males that aren't comfortable enough with themselves to wear them. But mostly because they are an expression, flawed though it may be, of my celtic ancestry.

You may have to adjust the length of the straps that hold it on. If they're too long, it'll just keep flapping about.

I've met Flamingo Ted, Mick, and I have to tell you he is as repressed in the flesh as he is in the spirit.

I know I'm a bit late to this post, what with it being a year or so since the last one. However, I have been wearing a kilt for over a year. Most of the guys in my area thought I was gay. I told them that if it was gay to like the freedom of my junk, as opposed to always getting my children pinched by breeches then I would rather be gay. The more I wore it, and got more looks from women then they did, teh more theyh accepted it. and nae a thing is worn under my kilt 'cept the hair the good Lord gave me!

Kilts. Great idea!

Pricy! Wow! But still a great idea.

One small problem, it would seem. Click HERE. The crucial, relevant verse comes toward the end.

Thanks Don, Thoughts of home revived. Got to get my Corries LPs back on the turntable!
(not sure that the pc brigade would like to hear all of it)

My house was on the corner diagonally opposed to the entrance of the 'Games Park' and every year on the first Saturday in August tens of pipe bands de-bussed outside, formed up, tuned up, and swaggered, the way that marching kilt wearers do, down to compete in the Strathallan Park. Happy memories.
Two brothers' in law wore their kilts (far more interesting and colourful than 'morning dress') when they married my sisters -

Hazel.

David Douglas High School in Portland Oregon used to (I hope it still does) hold Highland Games every summer, and a more eye-pleasing sight you never did see. Pipers were tuning amongst the trees, white shirts gleaming above the patterned kilts. It felt like having stepped back 200 years.

It wasn't just the marching bands either; it was a busy time of caber tossing and other feats of strength which I never saw anywhere else in my life.

There was a marching band in the Hollywood Christmas Parade with the entire band membership wearing kilts. The had pipers, too. They played quite well.

For some years now, in Enumclaw (Native American name), a small town south of Seattle (named after a Native American chief), the Annual Pacific Northwest Scottish Highland Games and Clan Gathering is held. Prominent in the event is the Keith Highlanders Pipe Band.

In the late Fifties, I was involved in the East 42nd Street Arts Festivals, which were held in the University District, just adjacent to the University of Washington campus. The City of Seattle barricaded the streets in the area so they could be used for displays and performance stages. I was one of the several singers of folk songs who performed during these festivals. One afternoon, the Keith Highlanders Pipe Band put in an appearance, piping and drumming and precision marching up and down University Way. Stirring! Exciting! It got the blood of this great-grandson of an expatriate Scot coursing through my veins!

A couple of girls of my acquaintance got to giggling and speculating about the usual question:   what do they wear, if anything, under their kilts? One of them waited until a crucial moment as the pipe band came marching down the street, rushed out into the street, and lay down on her back. Without breaking step, the pipers deftly stepped over her. After they had passed, she got up and came back, wearing a smirk. When the other girls asked her, "What? What?" she just continued to smile enigmatically and refused to answer.

During the Seattle World's Fair in 1962, a lot of musicians, me included, found plenty of work. One of the pipers in the Keith pipe band started playing the pipes in a local tavern. It occurred to him that, under those circumstances, he should probably join the musician's union, the American Federation of Musicians. He went down to the offices of the Seattle local, and they just laughed at him. "Bagpipes? Don't be ridiculous!!" So he figured, "Well, okay, I asked and they said 'No.' If they don't want my dues, who am I to argue?" Then, when another official of the A. F. of M. dropped in to the tavern, he asked the piper for his union card. When he didn't have one, the official told him he'd have to join the union. A bit ticked off that when he'd applied, they blew him off as not being a musician, and now at the official's general rudeness, he told the guy to take a hike. The union threatened to close down the tavern. So he and the tavern owner wrote to Scotland and got a ruling.

The bagpipe, the ruling said, is not a musical instrument. It is a weapon of war.

All the union could do was sit and fume. They'd had their chance.

I was in Australia for my sister's wedding, and all the men had to wear a kilt, My father and brother Jim didn't wear one. The funny looks that we got from some of the Australians was funny.

my nephew went to the gents and there was this man with his boy, and the man saw my nephew in his kilt, and thought that my nephew was a cross dresser, and said to wee boy hurry up and lets get out of here.
