Anyone out on the canals at Christmas, or sea for that matter?
I(plus other musicians) will be around the Chester/Nantwich/Middlewich triangle for a few days each side of Christmas, and will be up for music sessions and jollity. Anybody with a boat liable to be round there?
Christmas boating is always a high point of my year, the canals are quiet, there is the added excitement of getting iced-in in unpredictable places, trees blown across the canals by winter gales, locks inoperable due to ice. And the pubs are very inviting when full of decorations and hot fires, when you've been standing on the back deck with your feet freezing for a few hours in a biting easterly.
   And the main thing, of course, no officious busybodies have yet introduced the breathaliser onto the cut. On the M6, it is frowned upon to drive along while eating a mincepie and drinking hot port. On The Trent and Mersey, this is de rigeur.

If Dave was still around I'm sure he'd be up for it. He always enjoyed the Christmas meet on the canals with everyone contributing to the Christmas dinner. Have a good time.

Drop Emma B a line if you've got a spare berth, or if you get any land-based sessions going, she's not far from Middlewich and loves boating. Sadly, my (shared) boat won't be out, it's at Jannel being repainted.

Theres usually a good session on a Monday at the Shroppie Fly, Audlem. I was told that it would still be on on Boxing Day. I've just started a thread askinging if that's right but it seems to have vanished.

Probably not quite the same, but a buddy & I have a tradition of kayaking on a local bay on Christmas. (Tomales Bay, right along the San Andreas fault, just south of Half Moon Bay which was made famous in Hitchcock's "The Birds" - central California, USA)

No ice in the waters 'round here though. Rarely even frost on the grass.

If there's no ice on the water, Lady Hillary and I will be on Jamaica Bay for New Year's. A couple of years back, we were just coming into our inlet when Uncle Sam's Confused Group {the Coast Guard} came over with M16's at the ready to inquire what we were doing on the water. End the year as you wish to start it.

There's Middlewich Open Mike at the Boar's Head in Middlewich this coming Wednesday (21st)and I'm reliably informed that the same venue has a session going on on New Years Eve. All assured of a hearty welcome, as always.

I wouldn't mind betting that the Boar's Head might be amenable to a bit of music on Boxing Day; they're very obliging folk, as you probably know, and they've taken full advantage of the new licensing hours - 9am to 1am (or it might be 1.30am - very civilised, whichever). Failing that, of course, there's always the King's Lock. Wherever you end up, Season's Greetings to one and all.

I intend to haul away the bowline and splice the mainbrace around 2PM today, and head for Chester till the light runs out. Which suggests, according to how ready we are at 2PM, that the Shady Oak is the most likely port of call tonight, but we just might go to Crow's Nest Bridge, in which case we'll go to a pub called(I think) the Aldersley. But the Shady Oak is my bet.
