Crane Driver & SussexCarole - Wedding 8 April

15 Jan 06 - 11:47 AM (#1648790)
Subject: CD & Carole - Big Song & Dance Day
From: Crane Driver

Well, the time is drawing near – Andrew "Crane Driver" McKay and "Sussex"Carole Etherton are getting married on Saturday 8th April 2006 (a Week Before Easter – note gratuitous song-link allowing us to post above the line). The actual wedding will take place at Swansea Registry Office – attendance is limited and already full, but if anyone would like to be present in virtuo, there is a webcam which will broadcast the ceremony from 11:30am BST (GMT + 1).

The reception/ party (and this is where the story really starts) will take place in our home village of Llangennith on the Gower Peninsula in South Wales, Britain's first officially-designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Any Mudcatters who would like to help us celebrate are welcome to attend, but if you hope to stay in the area please contact us first – we can hopefully point you to local accommodation, including the big campsite at Kennexstone, just a mile or so away. The celebrations will include jumping the broom, and will be basically much like a festival or mudgather – so dress accordingly. This is NOT a formal or conventional wedding reception! In fact, following Gower tradition, the celebrations will begin on the Friday night in the King's Head, Llangennith, continue at the Halfpenny Folk Club in Oldwalls Sunday night (about 4 miles away) and, if people can stay on, will continue during the week to segue/ stagger into the Miskin Folk Festival over the Easter weekend.

You can find a 360o panoramic view of Llangennith village here. The applet requires Java software (and a lot of luck) to work. The yellow building is the King's Head pub, and the blue building opposite is the Parish Hall, where we will be eating, drinking, singing and dancing all afternoon and evening. You can also see PJ's Surf Shop and the local church. If you can get that one to work, you can also try this panorama of Llangennith beach. It's a great area for outdoors activities, so if you like hillwalking, bring your boots, and if you like surfing, bring your board.

(Gratuitous song link #2) – Llangennith was also the home of traditional singer Phil Tanner. The existing recordings of his songs have recently been released on CD by Vanguard Records. Phil was also the last of the Gower Wedding Bidders. The bidder (messenger) used to travel from door to door around Llangennith, on a white horse if one could be procured, carrying a staff bedecked with white ribbons and reciting his "bidding rhyme" at every house as an invitation to the wedding. Since we can't hope to get round everyone in our expanded village of Llanmudcat, even on a white horse, we are using this post to invite you all.

One last point – NO PRESENTS. We really don't need anything, as we've combined two households into one already and had to throw loads of things out. It's your presence we're hoping for, not presents!

Andrew & Carole

There is only one thing that will keep us away and that happens to be that Kendall has a gig with Utah Phillips in California on that day.

We will raise a glass to the pair of you for a long and happy union though.

bit too far away for me to attend, so I'll just send my good wishes & congratulations.

I really must find the pics I took at Rhymin' Simon's place Boxing day 2004 & send them to you.

Found 'em, that's the advantage of filing photo albums on the floor! Expect a few emails sometime soon - that can be my present cos I won't be present.

Lots of luck and happiness, Andrew and Carole. You may remember we met at Whittlebury last year, and I really enjoyed your singing. Hope to see you there again this year.

We're otherwise engaged on the big day, I'm afraid, but we'll be thinking of you and raising a glass or two across the channel (Bristol, that is).

Pity, Giok, that would have been fun to watch.

I did attend a mad event held by GUEST: GUEST some years ago where they had naked Morris dancing (Any excuse for Guest). One male watcher was heard to say, on watching one of the larger female dancers: "I don't know what she's wearing but it should have been ironed".

Hmmm - enough said!

Steve and I will be there, I hope, as it's not that long since our own nuptials.   But one small piece of information - according to the friend who knows most about Welsh traditions (she's part of a family that has retained all kinds of knowledge within the family, as opposed to reading about it or hearing about it from elsewhere)the seal on the wedding is to jump the bonfire, rather than the broom. Now it could be that that's more a North Welsh thing than a South Welsh thing, and it could also be that you don't have anywhere to make the bonfire, but I thought I'd let you know in case you can do something about it. After all, if you're going to get married you should do it properly, eh? *g*    We have photos of our bonfire leap - made it quite a small fire to avoid incinerating all our smart wedding togs.
But enjoy all the preparations as much as the wedding itself - we only regret we can't do ours all over again.

Only 4 weeks to go now.   Thank you all for your good wishes and it's going to be great to see you all at our celebrations.    All plans ticking away really well - except for one added extra - I have broken a bone in my wrist & have my left arm in plaster (I await all the plastered jokes).

What to wear? whatever you are comfy in - there's absolutely no formal fuss.

Thanks for the info about the bonfire Ann - it's a great idea but unfortunately we don't have available space close to the Hall.

Nigel - we'll let you know the plans for the week before Miskin as soon as they are sorted. A beach bbq one afternoon/evening could be on the cards if the weather is good. Otherwise it's a pub sing/session on the Monday & Tuesday - Llantrissant on Wednesday & possibly Newport on Thursday (Mike Nicholson is the guest).

Giok - We have some wonderful medicine that stops hips aching......so back to your promise of that Morris dance......

For those of us unable to attend the actual wedding, there will be a wedding celebration of sorts at the Getaway. What to wear? What to bring? The gift has to be appropriate and tasteful (READ: Mary is going to get even for the ugly lamp!) yet small enough to accompany the happy couple home. HMMMMMM.
Champagne. of course subtly concealed in Pepsi cans and Giok doing naked Morris Dance with his newly rewired hips. Be still my beating heart!

Okay - Carole gave us a buch of music which essentially contains suggestions for tunes which are likely to be played during the weekend. Some of them are fairly common session tunes, but others are ones which I don't know. Although I can sit down and work them out - I can read music, but do not often have a need to, so I don't do it "up to speed", it is still easier to listen to the tune.
I tracked down a bunch of the tunes - in ABC format - which can be converted to MIDI using http://www.concertina.net/tunes_convert.html - CONVERT-A-MATIC.

A lot of the tunes are found in a booklet produced by the Lewes Arms Folk Club - Downloadable as ABC and Noteworthy Composer formats from HERE.
I have listed the tunes from the Weding List found in each "Volume":-

        Lewes Favourites Volume 1
The Cotillion (Bosham Band, circa 1800)
Scan Tester's No.2
Scan Tester's No.1
Flowers of Edinburgh
Soldier's Joy

        Lewes Favourites Volume 2
Brighton Camp
Cochin China
Jack Come Kiss Me Now
Michael Turner's Waltz (Mozart)
Enrico
The Sloe
The Weaver's March (published James Aird, 1782)
The Man in the Moon (Scan Tester)
The Tank

        Lewes Favourites Volume 3
The Oyster Girl
Speed the Plough
Welch's Four Part Polka (Sussex Tune Book)
Davy Davy Knick-Knack

        Lewes Favourites Volume 4
Rochdale Coconut Dance

        Lewes Favourites Volume 5
Maggie in the Wood
Dashing White Sergeant
Michael Turner's Jig
Old Rosin the Beau
The New Rigged Ship

         Lewes Favourites Volume 6
Laura
Monck's March (Belle Isle)
The New Moon
Scan Tester's Schottische No.2
Jimmy (Jamie) Allen
Marmalade Polka
My Love She's but a Lassie Yet
Off She Goes
Tip Top Polka
King of the Cannibal Islands
Moll of the Wood
(The saucy little bird on) Nelly's Hat (Scan Tester)
The Rose Tree

Well - That should give a start......
Quack!
Geoff.

Not long now - sending positive thoughts for the last few days before the wedding. Such marvellous organisation to help so many people celebrate, thank you both so much!!

Now to the serious stuff - will there be a wide-screen set up at Kennoxstone so we can All see the web-cast of the Wedding? Splott Man suggested all those with 'Power Books' should hold them open outside the registry office for the hordes of interested parties spilling out, but I wasn't sure what a 'Power Book' was a the time....

Or, where's the nearest internet cafe?

And is the event being videoed?

Dots (or birds on telegraph wires) came today, Carole. Thanks.

I don't think there will be enough time for me to learn the tunes as I'm only a baby at this, but Mick played them straight through without problem (of course!), so I think my duty will be mainly dog-holding!

Your organisation is amazing.

Looking forward to Friday. We're just about to go up to check out the motorhome. Yiipppeeee

The King's Head has indeed expanded considerably since your days as a 'Gower Boy' - due to Llangennith being a magnet for surfers in summer. They reckon to serve upwards of 600 meals a day during high season, so they should just about find room for us.

What a fine knees-up indeed. Wall-to-wall entertainment. I had to leave around 8.00 last night and can't get back for today but, apart from ceremonies like jumping the broom, we had everything: ballads, banjos and belly dancing. Concertinas, choruses and cake.

Carole partied big time and Andy beamed!

There will be photos!

Thanks SO much to Carole & Andrew for getting married & organising us such a splendid Celebratory weekend, Wonderful!!

The 2 1/2 minute workshop I held contained 20 singers & I understand there will be photo's courtesy of Micca. Am sure the belly dancing & 16 stone workshops have been recorded for posterity too - as if we were all to 'merry' to notice *grin*

Only one slight problem for me which was finding a 'ding' in a door of my new car - obviously from another car door in the pub car park. We're hoping to tap this out today & hopefully it'll be the first & last 'ding' I have, fingers crossed!

Hope all have either got home safely or are still 'whooping it up' in South Wales!

Many, many thanks to Carole and Andrew for a wonderful and memorable week-end. Best wishes for health and happiness through all the years to come.

All your thoughtful planning paid off. It was excellent to get the chance to talk to people as well as to listen to new singers: the whole week-end was a celebration, festival and holiday in one.

By the way, while driving through the Gower we noticed a poster for something described as an 'Easter Egg Shoot'. Is this a local custom? Do they fire the eggs out of a clay pigeon launcher? Bryan points out that beaters would be required.

What an absolutely unforgettable weekend:
  • spending a few days in such a glorious corner of Wales with such (mostly) good weather
  • meeting so many old friends from all over the country, and making some new ones
  • seeing and listening to so many talented singers and musicians
  • the long-anticipated pleasure of coming to Phil Tanner's home village and singing the songs he sang, and in the very pub where he sang them
  • the totally unexpected pleasure and privilege of being allowed to "be" the Mari Lwyd
But as someone who knew both Carole and Andrew before they met each other, by far the greatest pleasure was to see the public confirmation of the love that these two lovely people have for each other, and the happiness of them both.

It was a real treat, wasn't it? And thank you, Sian, for posting the link to the photos. The action shot of the broom-jump is excellent - I wasn't able to take one then as I was on the stage with the band (you can just see my head in that pic, the whitish blob peering from the back)and my camera was elsewhere.

Anyway, memories are better than photographs, and those of us who were lucky enough to be there are richly supplied with those now. I just hope Carole and Andrew weren't too busy running the whole show to enjoy it as much as the rest of us did.

What a great way to celebrate the start of married life!

On the 'Miskin' thread, but repeated here for those who "Don't do Miskin"

Bugeilio'r Maes Gwyn: (Miskin Watch)
(tune)Bugeilio'r gwenith gwyn

Idle days at Easter time
In poor, or clement, weather.
At Miskin in Glamorgan's Vale
We all will meet together.
In "The Cottage" or "The Mill"
We'll all combine our singing.
We'll meet our friends; we'll drink our fill,
We'll set the rafters ringing.

Folk may come from far and wide.
From Porth or Tonypandy.
To toast Crane-Driver and his bride.
And raise a glass to Andy
It's he who keeps us coming here
To him a debt we're owing.
He books the site, he books the 'Acts'
He keeps the be-er flowing.

For long as salt is in the sea.
Long as my hair keeps growing (o.k. poetic licence, it's in the original)
Long as my heart beats in my breast
To Miskin I'll be going.
It is a small but friendly fest.
And we all love it dearly.
That's why so many of 'The Best'
Insist on coming yearly

So once more we'll sup our ale
And raise our voices higher
Once snug inside old Miskin Mill
Around that old log fire.

Take it all back. Apart from the appearance of "Demon Eyes" on some of the shots you would be hard-pressed to improve on those photos. And the shots you would see on prints (from your 35mm camera) would then lose something in translation to computer.

Thank you all for giving us memories that will last a lifetime. We strolled over to the Surf Bar at our local on Friday night expecting maybe 20 or so tired travellers to be there and...wow.....there were at least 70 of our friends already singing...and the singing from thereon was just wonderful!

Saturday morning's Register Office ceremony was as informal as we could have hoped for and we had music and singing and even waltzed up the 'aisle' to Michael Turner's Waltz much to the **** of the Registrar! She soon mellowed and said that she really enjoyed our laid back approach and especially our music and song. Thank you to all who joined with us on the web cam.

And then back to Gower and the party! We were restricted to 50 (ish) guests at the formal 'do'...and when we arrived back at our village we had a total of 150 wonderful friends who joined us to celebrate. We jumped the broom...and sang and danced and drank and ate all the way to Midnight.......with a brief pause at 6.30 when a few of us went down to the beach to 'chill out'.

Two of our favourite Catters who couldn't be with us in person were with us in spirit. Jimmyt surprised us with a gift of a toast of fine sparkling wine..and I sang a special song to toast Jimmy with our guests on Sunday(remember our party went on for quite a few days)!

And Sorcha, who sent us the Chugwater chilli mix all the way from Wyoming. Baked potaotes without Sorcha's chilli? Never!

Thank you all who have posted photos, they are brilliant. We also have a dvd & cds of photos which have kindly been given to us. We will post more piccys as soon as we can.

And the belly dancing! Wow was that a treat...and 'Sixteen Stone' & Geoff Duck with his duelling banjos and so many people who sang songs especially for us. How can we ever thank you enough?

Singarounds on Gower every evening until Wednesday (with friends who stayed with us on Gower) at the Brittania and the Greyhound were just superb...and then we were off to Llantrisant and then on to Miskin for the Easter festival

Thank you Andy & Jillie for a wonderful Miskin......just remember that the bride was a Miskin virgin!

As we said before, memories to last a lifetime.......thank you

Carole & Andrew xxxx

I'd like to say that we felt highly honoured to be present at such a wonderful event.    IF we ever get round to tying the knot I'd love it to be an event like yours - filled with music, love and laughter.

Luv

Why thank you Gnu - I think I'm getting the hang of this 'getting older' business - just as long as I don't have to grow up!
