Les Barker on the Radio again

From Clive Lever, responsible for 'Guide Cats for the Blind' I and II:

Just to let you know that the weekend of 11/12 February is a biggie for Les
on the radio.

He is due to feature as guest on Celtic Heartbeat, Frank Hennessy's
programme on BBC radio Wales on Saturday 11 February. The following evening he'll be interviewed on the Genevieve Tudor folk programme going out on BBC Shropshire and BBC Hereford and Worcester. Meanwhile on BBC Shropshire, I hear that one of the presenters, I think called steve Middleton, has introduced a featur called "Les at eleven" on his shows.

Please can you keep those requests going in to any of your favourite local radio stations, and to Sarah Kennedy on BBC radio 2, asking for plays of "My Snails Have Not Yet Arrived" by Timothy West with Prunella Scales.

Anyone within easy access of Maidstone on Monday April 3 can see Les in concert, to raise funds for British Computer Association of the Blind's EyeT4All project, the day before it gets its official national launch.

Doors open 7.30, show runs 8 to 10.30pm. Tickets £10.

If you're nowhere near easy reach of the concert yourself, please tell any friends or relations you may have in London and Kent, who might want a good night out and a good hearty dose of laughter.

Details of Frank Hennessy's "Celtic Heartbeat" can be found on Radio Wales Which includes a 'Listen Again' feature where you can pick the programme up if you miss it until the following Saturday edition goes out.
The sub-menu at the top right also lets you view the playlist for the evening, but I think this only gets updated once the programme starts.

Thanks to Liz for posting this.

There is just a little more info that Clive hasn't put in, so here goes.

The venue is the standup comedy club "Up The Creek", 32 Union Street, Maidstone. All ticket proceeds in aid of British Computer Association of the Blind (registered charity no. SCO23234).

The backing support is supplied by the well respected, and very talented, traditional folk duo "Capella".

MC for the evening is reputed to be Yours Truly (well it can't all be good news).

Doors open 7pm. Show runs from 8.pm to 10.30pm. Wheelchair access to all parts of the building except the restaurant, but food can be ordered from staff and brought downstairs.

Tickets £10, obtainable from the Up The Creek Box office, on 01622 609050,
or by booking online at www.up-the-creek.com.

Thanks Liz and Nigel.

I've only seen him once and was very unimpressed. He writes great material, but his delivery when we saw him was terrible. The night before, a lad of about 14 or so did "Nobody hugs a hedgehog" and brought the house down. We heard LB do it the next evening and hardly cracked a smile. Maybe he was having an off day? Worth checking out that radio programme next weekend to see.

Graham.

I've seen (and worked with) Les many times and never known him to be anything but hilarious.
So perhaps, on that one occasion, he was having 'an off day'?
I don't wish to hi-jack this thread, but can I just mention that Salt Town Promotions and Live & Local Events are also presenting Les live at the Boar's Head in Middlewich on Good Friday? I'll post full details a little nearer the time, but if anyone wants more info they can e-mail me on salttownpoets@aol.com. Good luck to all concerned with the gigs and the new CD.

With a face like Sir Les has got, (What! Not knighted yet?)he dont need no delivery. I crack up just watching the silly bugger.
And by coincidence his latest booklet has just this morning landed on my doorstep. A really good start to the day.

Ahha, thats why I can't find it on Listen Again. It's next week. And that Celtic whatever is 3 hours long, thats a lot of washing-up.

Les stands in the middle of a big stage, looking small & forlorn, peering over his glasses, wearing a warm & comfy cardi & a bemused smile, reciting or reading silly words, and the audience erupts, chanting the choruses or catchwords, and he smiles shyly at our enthusiasm.

I think he's the world's best performance poet!

Of course, at JennyO's club it was a very hot summer afternoon & his warm woolly cardi was far too hot, so he pushed up his sleeves, and the audience was almost in his lap as it is a very small cafe & was packed with 70 fans.

So the 70 fans kept him cool, eh ;-) Yes, we were up very close and personal, which made it all the better! Can't wait to have him back again!
