There will always be a clash of cultures if Islamic Worshippers cannot develop maturity as the Christian Church took a few hundred years to do, and gain a detached and sophisticated sense of humour.

What is it people keep saying around here, "Ignore The Trolls"?

Failure to do so - reign in the extremists - can only result in failure for integration/cooperation into modern "Western Society".

And the claim about the French legalisation for head scarves being hypocritical about 'Freedom of Expression' is a red herring.

The wearing of head scarves is not 'Freedom of Expression' of Religion, for the wearing of head scarves is claimed by Islamics themsleves to be 'Compulsive Expression of Religious Differences'.

Islam does not require it anyway. Jesus did not require his disciples to practice the unnecessary perversion, which the church calls "chastity". All this crap is the result of the original teachings being hijacked, perverted and abused by patricarchal institutions.

If you know something offends people to the extent that others will die, why do you go ahead and offend them? Perverse pleasure? I don't like the plastic Jesus one and I certainly would not contribute any verses to a plastic Jehova, Allah, Mohammed, etc. mg

"Islam does not require it anyway."

So this is just a 'political control' of the followers thing as currently vocally pushed? And all the fuss in France is just Political stirring?

The Jewish practice of bodily male mutilation is mentioned in the Bible, is it not?

"If you know something offends people to the extent that others will die, why do you go ahead and offend them?"

So if someone is a domineering bully and is determined to hinder others freedom (which they also demand totally for themsleves) to the extent of mudering those who do not agree with them, then we must cower in fear of the bullies?

If someone is likely to be offended, the solution is clear. Don't open the thread.

The same is regarding the Mohammed cartoons. Don't buy the relevant newspapers.

If Allah Akhbar (God is great), he would deal with it himself, instead of relying on some self appointed nutcases to profess outrage and threaten all manner of violence.
Yes the cartoons were crude, but so is much of what passes for comedy these days.

Get a life.

Hi Robin,
I fear I may not have been clear on that thread about the "Plastic Muhamed". I actually agree with you. Muslims whom I have known have told me that the Prophet did not specifically require headscarves for his female followers. Most of these rules have been made up by the institutions, which only claimed to be following the original teachings. By making the pious claim that they "were serving their God", patriarchs and bullies have always invoked a "higher power" to mask the fact that they were actually grabbing power for themselves. The Borgias became popes and the most successful gangsters of their day, while invoking "humility" among their followers. Very convenient. I am always a little suspicious of those who wish everyone else to be more humble!
As for the necessity for Muslims (along with everyone else) to develop a little more sesnse of humour about their beliefs - I could not agree with you more.
Regards,
Alan.

I actually have a very good rhyme for it. But I won't play sick games - people's beliefs are too important for that, irrespective of what I may think about them or what I believe myself.

There is being light, and there are airheads. You know, the kind that think that drinking, dancing and television are the only things that make life worthwhile, and can't keep their peckers to themselves. Serious thinkers...not!

I agree with alanabit (and el grecko) just leave it alone. Iconoclast, elastoplast/elastospaz or whatever else he calls himself hasn't even got the gumption to use one name and stick to it. I too know quite a few muslims and I respect their beliefs and their right to defend their integrity (though murdering innocent bystanders in the name of jihad is abominable and SHOULD be condemned - all my muslim friends do so; they are ashamed when these things happen). It's a pity that Christians have gotten too damn blase to object strongly when their more venerated beliefs and sygils are wantonly abused. They should show more passion. BTW - even among radical elements of the Muslim faith; will you RARELY (if ever) see them desecrating images of Christ!

I think this thread is best left alone - we are playing with too many ideals too close to people's hearts.

end of communication Iconowhatever - reply as is your right but do not expect a counter reply; I won't be returning to this infantile subject.

The reasons for Muslim anger are much more complex than a cartoon.

Hi Mr Greko

Artist: The Youngbloods Lyrics
Song: Get Together Lyrics
Love is but the song we sing,
And fear's the way we die
You can make the mountains ring
Or make the angels cry
Know the dove is on the wing
And you need not know why
C'mon people now,
Smile on your brother
Ev'rybody get together
Try and love one another right now
Some will come and some will go
We shall surely pass
When the one that left us here
Returns for us at last
We are but a moments sunlight
Fading in the grass
C'mon people now,
Smile on your brother
Ev'rybody get together
Try and love one another right now
If you hear the song I sing,
You must understand
You hold the key to love and fear
All in your trembling hand
Just one key unlocks them both
It's there at your command
C'mon people now,
Smile on your brother
Ev'rybody get together
Try and love one another right now
Right now
Right now!

If this offends your friends, I think they have an attitude problem.

Hey, Plastercast, did my comments sting? Else, why do you keep trying to justify yourself to me? Your 11 Feb 06 - 07:01 AM posted lyrics would not offend my friends at all, no reason why they should, and I never claimed that they did. No, it's your earlier "plastic Mohammed" attempts that offend them - did you not understand that? Is that why you never replied to my 10 Feb 06 - 07:00 AM question?

Hi Mr Greko
Not ignoring you, just unable to get on the mudcat.
I did miss the point of your 10 Feb post.
Yes, I can understand that your friends would be upset. They would be even more upset if they typed in the words Mohammed and Camel into Google. They would find some really offensive and hateful material.
Should Google be censored?
Many Christians were hugely offended by The Life of Brian, however the members of the Python team where not forced to go into hiding like Salman Rushdie.
Racial and religious vilification is rightly condemmed (and is prohibited on the Mudcat I believe).
Satire and parody are part of my culture, I would not perform Plastic Jesus on Sunday morning outside a church, but in a pub session or festival it can be a riot.
I know a few Christians who are amused by some (not all) of the verses.
There is an obvious parallel with the cartoons issue.
Enough allready!

See y'all

Hi GettoBlaster (now, that's appropriate in a funny way :-)),

Yes, I too know some Christians and also some Jewish people who were offended at LOB, but the majority as you say took it for the intelligent satire it was (I think it's one of the greatest comedies). And one of my favourite comedians, sadly recently departed, was Dave Allen, with his incessant digs at the organised church (not at religion). However, I cannot judge one culture through the rules of another; in Islam, depicting Mohammed is a terrible blasphemy, with no equivalent in my own culture. I cannot simply ignore the hurt it causes, and I choose to be sensitive towards such taboos. No law makes me (sensitivity towards others is not as well protected by law as freedom of expression, in the Western world) - I just choose it myself. Neither do I in any way condone the extremist reactions, or indeed the stupid fatwa against Rushdie.

You see, I don't believe that there is such a thing as absolute freedom - it is always delimited, defined. You can play freely in the field, as long as you know where that field is (and more important, where it isn't), i.e. what the boundaries are. Such boundaries, defined differently by different cultures, should be respected as much as possible, even when they are not protected by law. Just part of the consideration towards others, that helps people live together.

So have your laugh - in private. When you do the same in public, be aware that you could offend, however.

I'm short enough, and I've no wish to be a head shorter.

However, I don't set out to gratuitously insult anyone's beliefs.   I used to do, but grew more brains.

'Plastic Jesus' doesn't insult Christianity, it's just a sly bugger trying to give the cops a false impression, like all the defendants that 'find God.'

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Plastic Mohammed..anyone game?

Hi Sir Grecko
Thank you for your explanation. I can assure you that no malice is intended. My belief system places a value on fairness and equality. It is quite fashionable and politically correct to ridicule christian (and in particular roman catholic) religion, partly do to past misdeeds, and also to their stance on issues such as contraception, homosexuality and so on.
I have some difficulty in accepting that a Muslim's offence at blasphemy is any more serious than that of a Christian (Hindu etc)
I also have some difficulty with the often stated aim of some Muslim leaders to impose their beliefs upon unbelievers or alternatively to kill them.
This thread is heading towards the BS dept or perhaps it should be left to die in peace.
Yours Respectfully
Plastique

'Plastic Jesus' doesn't insult Christianity, it's just a sly bugger trying to give the cops a false impression, like all the defendants that 'find God.'

Poking fun at the Church was always on among the peasants, even the priests, in Western Society, even if it wasn't a great public affair.

Of course, once Martin Luther started with the cartoons calling the Pope The Whore of Babylon, and the Catholics retaliated, it was not really possible to stop it anymore...

Not all sects of the followers of the Prophet are quite so extreme as other sects.

And of course, the problem is that in THEIR culture, they have a tradition to expect all outsiders to their culture, whether or not of their faith to respect their beliefs. In The West, we also have an expectation that expects outsiders to respect our lengthy traditions, including the right to ridicule 'any sacred cow'.

The problem with that WILL BE a clash of cultures if both cultures intermingle and each insists on being sanguine, or else one culture 'conquers' the other.
