BS: Sorch Needs MudPower

NOT BS...and for some of you it may seem fataecious...but my Annie dog is VERY ill....high blood sugar, elevated liver and kidney enzymes, super high white count....vet has no idea, thinks several things are wrong. I think it almost has to be poison of some sort....thoughts for Annie, please? Even if some of you think it's silly.

Awww Sorch,

I'm sorry to hear about your Annie. :( There's nothing to do or say except that you and Annie are in my thoughts. I was standing in your shoes last month...it's absolutely heartbreaking. Is she at the vet's? Can you go visit to spend some time with her? My vet allowed me to do that and he also let me feed her (with a giant needle-less syringe as she wasn't eating on her own).

Lots of love and hugs for you and Annie.

Hi Sorcha,

I am glad you sent a call out for good thoughts for Annie. Mine are being sent to her, you and her vet.

I've been thinking of what you said about her symptoms. It does sound like poisoning of some sort. Sometimes, when a dog has a flea bath and the flea killing stuff isn't duluted, this could hurt a dogs liver and kidneys, especially if the dog has a sensitive system due to age, etc.

My hope, since you've shared that she's doing better, is that it was something mild that she can get over. The IV will help dulute the gunk and help the liver and take stress off the liver and kidneys.

Since you aren't quite sure what she might have gotten into, I would ask that you do a good look around in your house, the garage, and front and back yards (trash area too) for anything that might still be lingering- I would hate for her to get better and go back to that horrible stuff.

Sending my best- OXOXOX

Well,Sister I thank you for that...we are almost SURE it is poison of some type....but the weird thing is that the other 2 dogs are fine.....she can't get into the garbage, or anything else. Almost down to somebody tossing something over the fence....and it seems they 'can't do' a tox screen on a dog.....labs are backed up with human stuff. NO flea bath, flea collar, etc...I won't DO flea collars. No bath for at least 6 mos....

Hi again Sorch,

I've actually tried to do some research on the web with what you've mentioned: high blood sugar, elevated liver and kidney enzymes, super high white count and have seen a few things but nothing that I could pinpoint that you should look at- one did mention that acorns from Oak trees can make a dog sick- very sick but the article mentioned other symptoms as well.

I wish I knew more about medicine and healing-its so frustrating at times like these, isn't it?

Please keep us informed on how Annie's doing. I am sending positive thoughts that she will be fast on the mend and will never have to deal with this illness again, whatever it is.

Hi again Sorcha,

Here is the link to the article/newletter that had the information about acorns in it:

If the link I just tried doesn't work, here it is just pasted:

http://www.tailwagginsbakery.com/newsletter.htm

It's a little down on the page...

It might be a long shot but it's something that did come up when I put in those symtoms.

Sending my best and hoping she is getting better regardless of the initial cause (although it's so much better to know the "why" of these things).

Subject: RE: BS: Sorch Needs MudPower
From: JohnInKansas

The most common toxic substance my vet references cite that appears to be likely to cause all the symptoms described is common automotive antifreeze (ethylene glycol). Some dogs, especially small ones, may be sufficiently sensitive to be affected just from licking the shoes of someone who's walked through a spill, especially if there's repeated exposure. Dogs and cats both seem to be attracted to the "sweet" taste, and may seek it out once they've found a spill. Since with small doses, the onset of symptoms may take a fairly long time, there often is the opportunity for repeated ingestion before severe symptoms are noticed.

There appears to be no definitive way to determine that this might be the toxicant however, unless you actually know that the animal has been into some of it, or has at least had access to some. Many other things only slightly less common can cause very similar symptoms.

For the most part, so far as the treatment is concerned, it probably doesn't matter a lot what the specific source was, since the recommended handling does not vary for the various possible toxic agents. There are no treatments specific to most of the various different toxins that can produce the reactions you described. From your description, I think you can be assured that your vet is doing the right things.

While there are "contaminants," mainly fungal, that could cause peanuts and/or raisins to harm a dog, the same contaminants could cause serious effects for humans, so they're generally guarded against in any commercial products intended for human consumption. They would hence be unlikely to present to be harmful to a dog. There's a slight possibility they might appear in locally produced or home grown products, but the emphasis would be on the slight. The exception would be if there were chocolate covered peanuts or raisins in the mix. Extremely small amounts of chocolate can be very toxic to dogs, with some breeds known to be much more sensitive than others. Chocolate, even in a sensitive dog, is unlikely to produce all of the symptoms you listed, so probably is not a source here.

The same chemical group that causes chocolate to be harmful to dogs is found in some teas and in a few herbals, including wild plants, that might be fairly common, but are rather unlikely to be ingested by most household animals. And again, it might cause some of the symptoms; but wouldn't match up to the full set.

In short, unless you can find something that this particular pet has been getting into that the others haven't, it's unlikely that you'll ever know the specific source of the problem. When Annie is better, your vet may be able to suggest some things to look for; but it's likely to be a matter of eliminating things that could have been responsible rather than just getting rid of one thing that did it.

Hope and love seem to be the only things that we can offer that are specific to the problem at hand, in addition to the help (and probably a bit of hope and love) being provided by your vet.

John

Antifreeze - nasty stuff, because unlike the run of poisons it actually has a pleasant sweet taste. There was a big scandal a few years back in Eutope about rogue wine manufacturers using it to make really rough wine taste more palatable, and poisoning people in the process.

Best wishes to Annie.

We lost both a dog and a cat to kidney failure, with similar symptoms, and the vet suggested anti-freeze was responsible but there isn't any around here.
Then I found similar problems could come from lily poisoning. And we did have 2 different lilies growing in the garden. Even in a vase, if puss brushes against it, gets pollen on her coat, then licks it off - that can be enough to kill her, which it did.
So I wish you well, but get rid of any lilies - kidney failure is a horrible way to go and very distressing for the family.

Sorcha,

Thanks for letting us know. I had thought about pancreatitis although it's so hard to actually diagnose.

If that's it's that and you've found a good clinic, hang in there. It can be pretty serious (as you already know) and sometimes it can be the beginnings of chronic pancreatitis.

Here's a pretty good site with vet information- most of the general information is in the middle area:

http://www.vetinfo.com/dpancrea.html

You all have been on my mind today as I had my graduate advisor get "The Call" from the vet while I was being advised on the phone. We quickly rescheduled and I thought about Annie, you and your husband and all of us who love our furry babies so much and understand that this is part of the commitment we make together.

Sorch,
I had a nasty old cat named Fred who was banned from two vets' offices. Big RED NASTY!!! on his chart. He ate some rope (don't ask) and tore up his intestines. His liver started to fail. After surgery, hours after surgery, they told me to come and get him - he was upsetting the other patients.
For a week I forced a malt paste down his throat and some water with a syringe. I bled. I cried. And I finally looked at him and said "Tomorrow, we end this". The old bastard stood up, went to the kitchen and ate. He pooped the next day and recovered.
You have my sympathy.

I am continuing to check this site for updates and appreciate your checking in with us. Please tell Annie that now is not the time to watch her girlish figure. I know also that the vet must have her on dietary restrictions which she might not like either- I am just hoping that she will let down her guard and be so happy to be home that she'll be happy to eat anything.

If she's not eating then add a little glucose (or fructose) to her drinking water. It may give her enough energy to get her appetite back.

You can often buy glucose at an (East) Indian Grocery Store.

Hey Sorcha,

Ask the vet for a large syringe minus the needle. Get yourself some baby food and gently use that to get the food back further into her mouth so she swallows (natural reflex). Do just a little at a time...we had to do this with my cat.

Another trick we have used when we have sick dogs who aren't interested in food is to use peanut butter. Sometimes we put it on a cracker and they just lick it off...I know PB is high in fat but you can buy lower fat PB...high nutrition in small amounts. Another thing we do is to warm gravy , pour it over dry food and let it sit for a minute or so....so the gravy has some time to soak in a bit but still wet enough that the dog can lick just the gravy if she isn't interested in the softer food. Save the syringe for a last resort...you can be gentle with it but it still will make your pet anxious.

I hope that might help. Love to you and Annie.

Michelle

Folks, I hate to tell you this, but baby food often has onion powder in it...toxic to dogs. Peanuts therefore peanut butter and oil are also toxic....So is liver in large amts...esp if the liver enzymes are eleveted...glucose is right out because her blood sugar is already elvated....Trust me, I've done my homework on this one.

What she needs is to eat (appetite stimulant) and a long term low fat diet. But right now, ANY food she will take by mouth would be acceptable.

Here is an (I'm sure partial) list of human foods that are toxic to dogs...there are many, many more plants that make this list...indoor, outdoor, cutlvated, wild, etc....this is just some.

Pear pips, the kernels of plums, peaches and apricots, apple core pips (contain cyanogenic glycosides resulting in cyanide poisoning)
Potato peelings and green looking potatoes
Rhubarb leaves
Mouldy/spoiled foods
Alcohol
Yeast dough
Coffee grounds, beans & tea (caffeine)
Hops (used in home brewing)
Tomato leaves & stems (green parts)
Broccoli (in large amounts)
Raisins and grapes
Cigarettes, tobacco, cigars
Onion, garlic, all alliums
Chocolate
Peanuts, macadamia nuts
Mushrooms
Raw salmon
Cat food
Citrus oil and citrus fruit
Persimmons
Raw potato in large amounts

Sorch...just passing on what my vet does and we have had good results with. If you look at the ingredients on baby food, you will find that several add nothing. In addition, you can make your own....puree some meat with a little added water and bingo...you're good to go.   PB is only ever given in small doses so it isn't a concern....it does, however, contain sugar and if you are having to maintain really strict dietary rules in that department, skip the PB.

Does your vet think she is diabetic or the sugar is elevated just now due to being sick or meds she is on?

Hi Sorch...

pals dog got poisoned accidentally by rat poison the other day. That was very touch and go, but she made it. Similar symptoms, it was a warfarin type poison.

You don't have any pills/tablets about the place would you, or may be lillies (they are highly toxic). As are a lot of house plants, also in the garden there's lots to look out for, especially types of Euphorbias

As for food, over here they usually recommend, plain boiled chicken and plain boiled rice for starters.

Good luck

Thanks, Lily and Sooze...but it's not poison....NO lilies, no tabs, no rat poison...I make sure of that. It's really pancreatitis...vet doesn't thing she is really diabetic...yet....it's due to the pancreas kicking up. If we get this cleaned up fast enough, she may not get diabetic.

All my life I had heard that salmon was oxic to dogs - it even had its own cognomen "salmon poisoning".

But in Alaska many a dog team lives entirely on salmon, raw, frozen, dried or in soups, makes no never mind.

No....not eating, and worse again this morning...vomiting again, back on the Reglan, kidney level won't come down (BUN is 82, for those who know) and white count is back up to 25,000. They are going to try to get some nutrients into her blood from an IV....nobody knows why she isn't responding to the drugs......we are basket cases here.

PS...the sewer backed up this morning too...can't get hold of a plumber....

Somewhere a puppy runs
as pleased with the world
as she is willing to please.
As she grew we laughed with mutual amusement,
she on two legs and we on all fours.
Born in July by March she was thigh high
She laughed at our music and we at hers.
So I try to remember that somewhere a puppy runs
because I can not erase
that last look of resignation
on our beloved Annie's face.
