Usually much of interest. She also heads the Shtetl Waits, or rather Burning Bush, which explores Jewish traditional music, from Klezmer through Sephardic to middle eastern and beyond. For some reason, they never re- isuued the first two City Waits albums on CD. When I asked Lucy about this at a concert a few years ago, she gave me the impression that they weren't very proud of them. Strange. |

The two albums I remember were funny and bawdy, a bit raunchy in sound, and still managed to be excellently played early music. I think one was called "A Gorgeous Gallery of Gallant Inventions". I don't know what the other was called. They were my favorite early music albums for years. JP |

I think that track was on Gorgeous Gallery as well. I agree with you guys - they've always been faves of mine too. One thing I remember Roddy doing at gigs, which isn't effective on a recording, was to play - and he actually did get the melody out - by holding the bow still and moving the violin back and forth! |

Not how I sing it but then I got it in the oral tradition. Having looked in Pils to Purge Melancholy - their version is more original and as I remember it abbreviated for their masters - "Past Times" wans't it? I think the fact that it was a jobbing, risque project would make it less appealing to them now. But fun fun fun. |

It contains a new and longer rendition of the song that was on the B-side of the old Tomorrow The Fox single - but I do believe that old single never did appear on an LP or get reissued. Shame, those early ones may have been rough but they were good fun. |

It's just a shame that so many of their CD recordings have songs in common with each other - not a mistake I can imagine the late David Munrow ever making (Roddy Skeaping used to work with him btw). Their line-up changed several times - their How The World Wags CD features two other musicians instead of the Skeapings while several CDs from the 80s and 90s have Robin Jeffrey on lute instead of the great Doug Wootton (who now also writes musicals for schools). |

They used to do free foyer events at The National Theatre in the late 1970s, and excellent they were too. |

I'm Lucie Skeaping and am busy with all sorts of music stuff incl City Waites, Burning Bush and BBC. City Waites (well Roddy, Keith Thompson, me and 3 new musicians) are all doing the music for a new production at Regents Park Open Air theatre this summer - The Beggars Opera.
