09 Mar 06 - 08:56 PM (#1689663) Subject: John Zehnder, RIP From: John on the Sunset Coast John Zehnder died this past Sunday. He was a longtime fixture and instrument fixer at McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, and way more than that. John was a college friend at Santa Monica City College and UCLA from 1959. He was the influence that got me past the Kingston Trio into more true (whatever that means) folk music, and even gave me guitar lessons--I suspect I was his only failure. Over the past 45 years I would see him on occasion, generally at McCabe's, and we'd catch up a little. I had not seen him in the past five or so years. I admired John Zehnder, because, more than any other person I knew, he followed his dream and his most favorite vocation. Heaven is rollicking with old-timey music since John arrived, but I will miss him down here. |

I brought it into McCabe's in the mid-1980s to see if anything could be done with it. John took it and fixed it up, and now it's the sweetest sounding guitar I've ever had. |

He repaired a couple of Tipples which belong to my grandmother and great aunt. In addition I took Mandolin lessons from him and purchased a 1917 Gibson A-5, which I still have. He was so talented, such a fine man. The world lost a truely talented and kind man. |
