Bobert's New CD sells out on CD Baby...

I can't belive this but the initial shipment of CD's of "13 Shades of Blues" to CD Baby has sold out in just 9 days!!!

Yeah, most were purchased by Frenchfolks but also by Germans, UK'ers and the States....

I'm thrilled!!!

Looks like another trip to the post office on Monday with another box full....

Hey, it ain't the dough as much as folks wantin' to have the CD's... Though the dough will convince the P-Vine that maybe another CD, which is allready recorded, is a'comin'....

Cowabunga!!!!!

Bobert (Sidewalk Bob)

AND you'll have them to sell at gigs! Seamus Kennedy is a master at doing that-- suggest you ask him to post about how he does it, here or in a separate thread.

Subject: RE: Bobert's New CD sells out on CD Baby...
From: Bobert

Okay, first of all, cynic has a point... I sent 20 to CD Baby and sent another 20 today...

Considering that I haven't (as yet) had time to send a single CD to any radio station that has blues programing and the Europeans are just getting there's and will no doubt write some reviews, I'm really happy with that.... When one considers the sheer number of folks you do mail CD Baby 5 copies and wonder why no one has ordered them, I'm extremely excited...

Plus, I been playin' now for over 40 years so I purdy much have a lot of this music stuff half figurated out so, ahhhhhhh, I kinda know what I can best do and how to do it...

I remember back in the early 70's doing coffee house folk and people coming up afterwards asking if I had an album out... Then when I found I had more time in my life for music about 5 years ago and started playin' 'round it would be the same questions, except it was CD's this time 'round...

Feels good to have this one to share and now that perfect strangers are buying it, without even seein' me perform (which is twice as entertaining as the CD, IMO) makes me feel somewhat validated as a life long folk musican...

So, according to the comptroller, about another 100 in sales and we'll be outta the red and into the black which can only mean...

.. another CD naming contest and another CD artwork contest....

A response full of grace and proudness, Bobert. Joy and success is relative, we should never forget that. The new German 'superstar' (instantly forgettable) will sell 800,000 copies of his CD though his voice and singing is just half as good as Bobert's, not to mention that he can't accompany his singing.

I can't sing though I'd love to but I can write boring science stuff. If I would write novels I'd hang myself if my new novel would sell 1,000 copies within the first year. If my next research methodology book will sell 1,000 copies within a year I'll proudly invite my family to dinner.

Even if for you 'success' is a small figure in absolute numbers, Bobert, you deserve every bit of it and have every right to be proud.

Wolfgang

Bobert had posted earlier that a certain number of sales would allow him to move $$ forward to his next project. I took his delight about selling out at CDBaby to mean that he had sold enough to move forward-- that's great! And the rest is not my business.

cynic, cut the bullshit. Of course you meant to diss Bobert. Using a GUEST handle of cynic speaks exactly to your motives. You figured Bobert was trying to imply something that was true technically, but didn't mean what the title implied. That is because you don't know Bobert, or you do and don't like him. In either case, just be honest. To do otherwise makes me cynical of you and your motives.

I, for one, am tickled for Bobert. It seems to me that with some time and appropriate promotion, our boy can get the type of attention that this CD deserves. He is a wonderful performer, and a wonderful musician. Go get 'em, Sidewalk Bob.

A lot of people do put the minimum of 5 copies at CD Baby and none of them sell whatsoever, so Bobert's achievement is a real accomplishment.

I put 14 on CD Baby and had 30 on me for live sales, and only have 4 left at CD Baby. (It's not folk though, save for one european tune they're all originals.)

Bobert,

Way to go!! I understand how nice it feels to do that---! It's the reason I, as a folkie, liked playing small coffeehouses and house concerts. Occasionally I sold out the room. For me, it's very cool to just get a new CD out there!!

And thanks to Mudcat for letting us talk about our recordings that folks here might like to know about. It's nothing short of magical, this brave new technology of the Internet.

All the best to you,

Art

Hey, Bobert:

I'm with Art. It's exciting when you release an album and people start to buy it. In a way, it's not the numbers that make the difference (although more is always better.) It's a long, slow process trying to get yourself down on record and it's a rush when it's finally done and they start to sell. It's a cause for celebration!

We're among friends in here.

Well, gol danged... I think the number of posts for a Bobert-above-the-line thread is a new record for me...

I think the Steve Earle one petered out at about 13 or 15 posts...
But no matter.... Like someone said, things are "relative"...

An' ol hillbilly ain't got no beef wid "cynic".... Heck, I can be a tad on the cynical side myself...

But, with that siad, I'm still happy that folks like the CD.... I've gotten some nice emails from folks who have it and the folks over at Tweedsblues.net, who are my blues homies, as well as blues players, like it...

Just nice to share music with folks...

Speaking of which, I was in DC today and played at the blues jam all afternoon at Archie Edwards Barber Shop... These are my true homies and I took a bunch of CD's to them, too... Sniff... They were all very surprised since I hadn't told a sole up there I was doing this project... But, really, I owe a lot of it to these folks who have put up with me for the last 5 years and taken me aside an taught me stuff...

So this CD, like the linear notes say is for the folks here at Mudcat, the folks at Tweeds and my homies in DC....

I ordered my Sidewalk Bob album just last week, and received my copy in the mail very quickly, so I apparently got one of those first 20 CDs ~ maybe the final one of that initial placement. I'd kinda like to think that I'm the one that caused the album to sell oout...

To me, "GUEST,cynic" posed a legitimate and interesting question, something I was wondering myself and something anyone daydreaming about this kind of small-scale CD sales would like to know. Maybe if he/she hadn't indicated owned up to being cynical, there may have been less negative reaction. And, the answers did prove to be interesting indeed ~ the CD Baby site only requires a very modest initial shipment of five units, and when Bobert dared to put four times that many up for sale, he wasn't being overly optimistic.

Here's to more successful marketing, Bob, whether 20 at a time, or 5, or hundreds!

God, I love the blues. Thanks, Bobert, it sounds great. I think you'll find that CD Baby is a good place to be. We've been selling through them for years. With the music we do, the sales are never overpoweringly lucrative, but it keeps a dribble coming in. The real fun, though, is seeing CDs going out to Vermont, Belize, Denmark, Austalia, Japan, and on and on. If I was in it for the money, I'd be playing pop music . . .

Plus, I have recently hooked up with my old harp player, Vince "Harp Boy" Farrabaugh, and we're going to performing together this season... We're really good together... Sniff, I've missed him so much... Next CD will have "Harp Boy" on it and it will be tons better than this one which I think is purdy danged okay, if I don't say so...

Congrats Bob. There's something very satisfying about even having your music out there for sale, regardless of the numbers. I recently broke even on my first solo effort, which I consider a huge success considering I had no outside promotion help.
People often consider the sales of Indie artists paltry and even insignificant, which they may be in comparison to the major labels with huge promo budgets, but how many of the artists are getting more than a few pennies per CD sold? More importantly, how many of them break even on a release? I sell a few hundred and I'm in the black. Small time? Sure it is, but intensely rewarding at the same time. Not only that, I'm not worried about the label execs asking me where the single is.
Enjoy the journey, and the little victories Bob; sounds like you already are. I'm off for a listen right now. All the best then. Cheers, Steve R.
