I have a job opportunity ,and I'm not at all familiar with that part of Florida.
Thanks for any help , you can give.

Are you talking about the chain of casinos run by Isle of Capri?

Haven't been there, but a google search brings up images of a place in the Gulf of Mexico called on most sites, "Isles of Capri", not the singular Isle. Sounds great for the winter, but I'd worry about hurricane season. http://www.gulfmex.org/crp3003.html

Housing costs will be prohibitive

I don't know if housing costs would prohibitive or not - no idea how much you mahe. The Isles of Capri are 4 Mangrove Islands which total 500 or 600 acres. The homes there are desctibed as "modest" and a road goes to the mainland. I have a place near Marco Island which is within two miles of the Isles. Go to

That part of FL has its own beauty, but, IMHO, is an over-built disaster waiting to happen. I wouldn move there as a long term proposition, but if its a job for a year or so, you might enjoy the experience. I used to work for an agriclural group that held its annual convention at the Marco Island Marriott every summer. In one of those moments when you'ld givr your left, er, appendage, for a camera, but didn't have one, I drove by the local McDonalds about 2:00 one afternoon and spied a dozen or more buzzards perched on the roof top. I imagined that the corporate folks would pay handsomely for the only print and negative of such a photo. Shgort summary: not a bad place to visit, but I don't think I wopuld want to live there. If you decide to go, pay attention to hurricane warnings.

Remember that the East coast of FL had the most damage from a Hurricane that came ashore near the Marcos Island area last year.

Buzzards on the McDonalds Roof? That is the norm for most McDonalds.
Those guys are used to rotten stuff.

But in the Marcos Island area, we do have rather large Seagulls.
Buzzards really don't like the saltwater atmosphere.

Mary, the area has more positives than negatives. Average temp is 75, fewer hurricanes than Kansas has tornados and not nearly as many blizzards as the Great Plains plus a lot less snow than New York or Boston.

Oh yeah, you will know about a hurricane way before you would a tornado. Something like 3 days compared to all too frequently 3 seconds.

I grew up on the Isles of Capri and lived there from 1990 to 2001. It's a beautiful place filled with modest homes and unbeatable gulf water access. I lived there before the "Boom" as they call it happened. Real-estate prices were more than manageable. It is completely different now, a large majority of the homes are old from the 60's and strictly because of land value the lowest prices are in the upper 400's. There is beginning to be a problem with the workforce on the neighboring island (Marco) because the real estate prices and the insurance costs have driven the middle class workers from their homes. Marco has and will become even more of a resort island. The cost of living outweighs the average salary (more than double). Now if you are wealthy enough, the by all means.. it's a beautiful place and enjoy it.

Capri & Marco have suffered many mid sized storms, and I myself lived there through hurricane Andrew in the mid 90's. One good thing about the area is the large amounts of money being pushed towards tourism. After the storms, everything is rebuilt quickly and fixed up even better than before. I wouldn't worry.

You'd have to be a Guest from Mars to confuse a buzzard and a sea gull, or else work for the local tourist bureau.
