BS: Brilliant idea

Close all threads that reach 200 posts. By then it has all been said, over and over and over ad nauseum.

I'd recommend closing this at 2 for the same reason.

I agree, Jerry. Ain't gonna get a better arguement than that. Hehehehe!

Cutting out GUEST threads and posts would also cut down on usage.

Won't work ... they'll just be reopened as a copycat thread.

You mean I should start a thread titled "Stupid Idea", Number 6? I'd rather not, if it's alright with you... :-)

Why the paranoia about doing away with the title "Guest"? It does not cost anything to become a member, no one knows your real name unless you choose to use it, as many of us do. I don't get it.

I agree with Jerry's first post.

Some folks need and value their privacy much more than others, kendall. Others are independant spirits, reluctant to join groups of any kind. Still others are total newbies to the internet with big privacy concerns.

I, for one, understand all this very well. Little Hawk told me aobut this site just a couple weeks after I bought my first computer, when I had absolutely no experience online. Mudcat was the first website I'd ever been on for more than a minute or two. And I would never have joined, were it not for a few months of encouragement and constant prodding from certain long-term and well-meaning 'Catters (probably intended to save me the suspicion / cold-shoulder treatment often directed at anonymous GUEST posters here)

Although it's just a rumor, I've been given (or maybe just assumed) the understanding that there may be one or more persons who have been "disruptive" enough to be barred from being a member. This is of course despite their occasional positive contributions.

Allowing GUEST postings permits them still to contribute, and perhaps serves as a reminder to be more participative and (a little) less abusive(?). (Sometimes it appears perhaps not.)

It should be noted that anyone posting as GUEST may be assumed to be one of them (or that one) so without other identification the self-standing "GUEST" has an inherited reputation most "accidental Guests" probably would not care for.

Please don't tell me the rumor isn't true, or even debate about it. I think it serves a purpose even if it is just an urban legend. It forces me, at least, to consider whether a GUEST is "that one" or just "someone who doesn't know" so it's a "trigger" for my closer attention to whether it's one to be considered or just one to be ignored.

Occasionally (but too rarely?) I find a posting that I assume "probably is him/her" that is quite positive, and I find it encouraging to assume (even if wrongly) that even "THE GUEST" sometimes tries. And I can ignore most of the others.

I'll also admit that some registered persons are so predictable that sometimes I don't read as carefullly as I should. I'm trying to pay more attention, but that ^%#$@! (deleted) always says ...

John

Won't somebody stop pointing that gun at the ""Guest"s head--which is obviously forcing said "Guest" to read postings it does not want to read?

I come on as a guest when at work, I really don't want my cookie to be on my works computer

I've been a Mudcatter for a long time - bought the CD's, made contributions, can receive PM's. I still get labelled Guest when I post.

Who needs a cookie? Don't you just enter your membername and password from any computer you are working at? That's what I do.

How about entrusting some posters with edit buttons by which they can impose their personal tastes upon their fellow posters. And even better - have some of these operate anonymously?

Or is that a stoopid idea?

One thing the "private membership" as Shambles likes to call it, would do is to eliminate certain guests who like to stalk women. More than a few have been driven away by these gutless rat bastards. Requiring all hands to be members would drag the creeps out into the sunlight where such cowards can't operate.
Furthermore, if everyone was a member, it wouldn't be a private club, would it?

I'm not a techie, but I thought it was possible to trace each and every contributor to the Mudcat, if this is the case, it is then not possible to notify the Police of any individual causing problems so they can drop in and "visit" them

One thing the "private membership" as Shambles likes to call it, would do is to eliminate certain guests who like to stalk women.

Eliminate has a sinister sound and of course what is proposed by the Chief of the Mudcat Editing Team will not eliminate anything.

For as this members only idea would not affect the music section - those who Kendall wishes to eliminate would simply post there....

As this is a thread for brilliant ideas - why also not turn the the music section into members only?

Because in the music sections GUESTs make 99% positive contributions.
