Hi there - I'm looking for places to listen to music (and sessions) on Toronto Island May / June- I'll be staying there for 6 weeks (ex NZ).

Any suggestions in or around Toronto - guest artists, festivals etc would be great as well.

Thanks

There is a session of the Flying Cloud Folk Club almost every Sunday evening - at the Tranzac Club. Google for info and contact phone numbers.

An old time music Jam the second Sunday of each month as well.

One old time music fellow I know of LIVES on one of the Toronto Islands (there are a few of those islands...)

Others will have more info I expect (old friends of Rick Fielding perhaps...).

I just got back from a month in NZ - excellent place. I wanna go back ASAP!

A place called "Healy's" has jams every Thursday evening. Can't think of the address right now. Cheers, Mike

Bluegrass music every Saturday late afternoon at The Brunswick House on Bloor near Spadina, and Wednesday nights after 10:00 at Te Silver Dollar for Crazy Strings - free

There are now two threads on this same subject.

Google "Hugh's Room". They have a ton of folk performers and are open 7 nights a week. They also have some big names from the world of folk music.

Thanks everyone - kiwibird's gone back up the Island (NZ) and away from my computer, so I'll email all the suggestions on (plus any others that may come to any of your minds!),
Kiwibird's far too humble to say she has a great voice, but I'm sure she'll lurk around sessions and participate when she's had just enough,

"HeAley's" (note the A!) is on the west side of Bathurst Street, a few steps south of Queen Street...and, as a result, easily accessed by public transit (streetcars!). However, the club is named after (and is or was booked by) Jeff Healey, who was once a noted rock guitarist but is now much more interested in jazz. So, there isn't much in the way of acoustic/folk music at the Thursday night jams.

Another possibility is an old Toronto "hangout"...Grossman's Tavern, which is located at 379 Spadina Avenue, just south of College Street (again streetcar-accessible). They have jam sessions on both Wednesday and Sunday nights...again mostly electric music but I have heard acoustic players there.

To find out what is happening musically, pick up copies of either (or both) of Toronto's entertainment newspapers...NOW or EYE. Both are free and appear every Thursday, and list all or most of the entertainment events for that week (along with addresses and phone numbers).

And don't forget...if you are staying with friends on Toronto Island, you have to catch the last ferry (although you can get back on a "Water Taxi" if you have $$)!
