Anyone know this one? I've tried everywhere else. I think it's pre-war, maybe music-hall/vaudeville. Regards Mick Bracken

that is one of the lines in I WISH I HAD SOMEONE TO LOVE ME ...a song which I do not really know, as most of the people whom I hear sing it make it sound as though it were written for steam calliope, and I cant bear to listen.... *shrug*

TONIGHT IS OUR LAST NIGHT TOGETHER

One night as I stood on the banks of the quay,
As the soldiers came marching along,
A brave soldier lad with his pale face so sad,
To his sweetheart these words he did say:

CHORUS:
Tonight is our last night together,
For the nearest and dearest must part.
A soldier may roam to the ends of the world,
With his thoughts on his loving sweetheart.

Let us roam through the meadows together,
Where we once made our love, you and I.
Dear Molly, you told me you loved me,
As you fought me to kiss you goodbye.
CHORUS

Perhaps I may fall in the battle.
What more can a brave soldier do?
Dear Molly, you know that I love you.
By the rosary, I swear I'll be true.
CHORUS

These words are taken from a very old record. I hope I got all the words right.

Regards,
Frank

Seems like an old thread, but what the heck,...

I heard this song by Tina Mulrooney as she sat playing harp at the Cliffs of Moher, Co Claire, Ireland.

The song appears on her album 'Memory Of Ireland' as The Soldier's Farewell. I don't come any better.

Roger Fullilove

Her lyrics are:-

TONIGHT IS OUR LAST NIGHT TOGETHER

One day as I strolled by the banks of the Boyne
Some soldiers were going away
There was one soldier lad with his pale face so sad
To his sweetheart these words he did say

CHORUS
Tonight is our last night together
When the nearest and dearest must part
But a soldier may roam to the ends of this world
With his thoughts on his loving sweetheart.

Let us go take a stroll through the meadow
Where we first fell in love you and I
Where you taught me to love you, dear Molly
Kiss me and bid me goodbye

Repeat chorus

And as he went into the battle
Wounded and dying he lay
But his last dying wish for dear Molly
Was his country, his mother and you

Repeat chorus

This song can be found on I-Tunes sung by Glen Curtin and it is called "Tonight is our last night together". My Mother is always singing this song and we have been searching for years for it. Finally found a version on I-Tunes, and the only difference is the first line in the song. The song says "Lastnight as I stood on a station platform", where as my Mum's version is "Lastnight as I stood on the Banks of the Boyne". The rest of the song is the same as the above versions. She is from Lahinch in Co Clare, Ireland. Hope this is helpful!

Caryl P Weiss sings the "I Wish I Had Someone to Love Me" song containing those lines. (See above, where a link was posted a decade ago or more).

Hi my dear Dad   sang this song too.
Dad was the only person we ever knew sang it, so beautifully too. I know he said he learned it from an old man who used to   visit their home when he was a boy.Miss Dad so much. and yet I was lucky to have my Dad for so long. Dad was 85 when he passed. I feel he is still singing his song.
