Gaps in UKFests list 2006: Any do's?

Subject: Gaps in UKFests list 2006: Any do's?
From: Mr Happy

I've put together a provisional calendar of folk w/ends for this season, mostly of free or cost next to nothing, just pay camping events.

Over the last several years, me & fiends just attend fringe/ diy events, as we enjoy sinarounds/ music sessions with kindred spirits, rather going to concerts at festivals.

i'm looking for suggestions about any events of this nature for these dates:

July: W/e 7-9,W/e 14-16,W/e 21-23

August: W/e 4-6,W/e 18-20

Can anyone help?

I'm afraid I can't think of anything off the top of my head, but I'll let you know if I find anything.

Your list sounds interesting (although I'm a bit wary of the "fiends" that apparently accompany you!). Is there any chance of my getting my hands on a copy?

Subject: Free (Fringe? DIY?) Festivals
From: Simon G

To me, folk music is all about diversity not only in style and performance but also in delivery. We have a diverse set of clubs, at least here in NW England. Long may it continue.

Equally with festivals. At Alison Arms Folk in Soppull, Lancashire we run what can only be called a DIY festival. There used to be a proper one until it had a bad year and sadly, several individuals suffered financially and dropped out of the folk scene completely. We enjoy our little festival, which this year is 9-11 June ( alisonarmsfolk.co.uk ). We contribute all year and have managed to get a bit of local sponsorship this year so we have Keiran Halpin on Friday night and some excellent local acts throughout the weekend including Wenchall and Jon Brindley. Of course there are plenty of singarounds as well.

I'd love to hear from other Free Festival organisers (bit of a strong word for what we do) on what works for them in terms of funding and marketing the event.

The weekend of 4th - 6th August is Sidmouth Folk Week, and camping should be easy enough at either Salcombe Regis or Kings Down Tail, and what's more there's a bus service that runs from both. Not expensive and of course the fringe is varied and enormous. Can highly recommend it. If you come you'll find me in 'The Bedford', but the Middle Bar, The Swan, The Radway and many others are just as welcoming.

Upton Fest is now DIY and camping only £10:00 per head for the weekend.
Lots of sessions. It's kind of reverting to its roots as that is what is was like when we started it. Hopefully it will generate the same kind of buzz that got lost as it became bigger.

May Bank Holiday weekend at Upron upon Severn

Alas Upton clashes with Sweeps.

Come on Mr Happy - please PM me and I'll give you my email address for that list (please)

I suggest so far

Easter 13 to 17 April- Miskin was great, not dear (but not free).

28 April to 1 May - Rochester Sweeps - but the sinagrounds are now less central to the event, and there is no convenient camping that I know of. The school site is I think just for ivited morris sides, so if you get yourself invited to play for a Morris side you are quids in....

June 2 to 4, Pigs Ear Folk Ale at Markbeech, Kent - not free but cheap.

22 to 25 June, Knockholt

7 to 9 July, Travelling Folk Folk Ale, Upper Dicker

28 to 30 July, Travelling Folk camp weekend.

11 to 18 August - Broadstairs. Camping a mile out of town and only available with a very expensive season or if you are eg a musician for one of the invited Morris sides, so get volunteering!

1 to 3 September - Faversham Hop Fest - the only convenient camping (still a bit of a walk) is for the performes and invited morris sides only, so again get volunteering.

6 to 8 October - Tenterden - camping (commercial site) a bus ride away so you are stuck in town all day with all those pubs open. Shame! Lots of good sessions/sinagrounds.

Re: Tenterden

We've only been once (about 4 years ago IIRC) but I did notice camping (in a rough kind of way) alongside the station. Not sure if it's still available but a local folkie will be able to tell you.

Thanks for the brill list, Mr Happy, I hope to see you at some of them.

That Tenterden camping was no more last year as a result of the new integrated farm subsidy which meant that set-aside subsidy was not available if there was any commercial use of the field during the year: the old 28 day and 15 day rules got lost in the small print.

I'll see what I can find out about this year.

There is always Towersey Festival (August bank holiday). Although this is a fairly expensive festival there is always the pub (Three Horseshoes I think). They have sessions in the bar most of time and there is a big sing, run by Admiral and Mrs Admiral, on the Monday.

I'm not sure what the camping arrangements are. I THINK it is for festival tickets holders only but there may be other camping available.

Other than Chester, is there anything else happening in Northern England / Southern Scotland on the second May Bank Holiday weekend (26 - 29th May)? Prefereably cheap!

If anyone's in Leeds on the 7th & 8th of July there's a free festival at the Abbey Inn, Newlay, next to the Leeds/Liverpool canal. There's a stage outside for bands and sessions in the pub if anyone prefers to play rather than listen.

It's all in aid of St. George's Crypt, a charity that helps homeless people so if you've got any spare clothing, tin of food or toiletries please bring them along.

July is looking a bit blank in the south of England. The Travelling folk camping weekend is for regulars only. Sharps is not on the Froots list but I am about to start googling.

So what else might suit a couple of grumpy old folkies (one disabled) with a small vardo inthe South-East of England in July?

How about
15th to 16th July Folk among the Roses at Nature's World, Middlesbrough
20th - 24th July, yes it starts on the Thursday, Staithes Acoustic Weekend
28th - 30th, last but not least, Durham Folk Party
the last 2 have camping for £4/5 per night

By the way just a 'plug' Denaby's £5 per night for a tent as long as they havn't increased the campsite prices
