Hi all
This is just a quick line to let you know that Woven Wheat Whispers has just made available for free download, a unique compilation album with contributions by some of the finest British singer songwriters and folk singers.

These are not "big names" or high profile artists, but they represent some of the superb talent working at the roots of the music scene.

You will find tracks by a few fellow mudcatters on here too.

The album is only available for aprox a month, at which time it will replaced by a new free download of British female singers.

You can access the download by going here and clicking on the "free compilations" button.

There's no catch, no need to register and no fee. We dont even want to know your email address. Just go ahead, download and enjoy.

Would love to hear any feedback too

Cheers
LL

Let me start by saying they are all better than me - BUT...

I have listened, and for my taste it all - with the exception of "The New Patriot" - sounds too like James Blount. Shame even that one is so electric in the arrangement but it's the only one with fire in its belly.

Are all the recordings produced by the same producer? With very few exceptions the acoustic guitar tone is thin - too "scooped" so you hear an initial "smack" and then a tizz from the higher strings. Some mid would have sounded rounder.

Vocals are too far back, and not projected enough.

The songs are mediocre, too. I know this is expressly "Singer Songwriter" but they are fairly (above exception excepted) quietly whiney. What happened to songs with "punch" - singer snogwriters do do some - Simon and Garfunkel's "Blessed", Paxton's "Death of Stephen Biko", quite a number of MacColl, "Morning Dew" "Come Away Melinda", etc etc.

Sorry to be so grumpy but saying sweetly "Very nice dear" doesn't help anyone to improve.... or to find a market to sell to.

Hi Richard
Thanks for your honest and open feedback.
No, each of these tracks comes from a seperate source and each has different producers (or self produced).
It's quite astonishing what people like and dislike. Without naming names, the feedback has been very varied so far, with certain artists being praised by some, but disliked by others. Conversely the ones who are disliked by one listener will be loved by another!

From the feedback received so far, the most popular artists would appear to be the Scots, Dave Gibb and Ivan Drever, both of whom have good followings from their numerous LPs and CDs. Running a close second come mudcatters Alan Moorhouse and Eddie Walker.

The odd thing though is that while all the artists are singer songwriters, some are accepted for being "folk" while others are not. The strangest part of this old chestnut is that no two parties agree what is or isnt folk!

Anyway. I'd welcome any other thoughts or feedback before the compilation is replaced by a new one with a different theme.

Cheers
LL
