I just tell them that if people can collect cannonballs, string and barbed wire...what is so strange about wood? well, in 10 minutes after I read your post I found these: it is a BIG world out there...now, since Popeye has his place...I'm going looking for Smokey Stover..*grin* |

Absolute scream!! We sang these in the early fifties Gargoyle, in W London. (It was called Middlesex then) Re the ice-cream vans, the tune always started off very fast, then got slower and slower until it was almost like a dirge. I suppose it was on some wind-up mechanism (no technology then!) Of course, we revelled in singing Popeye at breakneck speed, or extremely slowly, depending on where the ice-cream man was with his music box. The slap was always delivered at the same speed though - rapidly! We had no TV, but 'Auntie'-Poppy-down-the-road had bought one for the Coronation, and we used to go before tea-time to sit with her two horrible little boys to watch Children's Hour, and that's where we first watched Popeye the Sailor Man. (black-and-white of course, on a screen about one foot square) |

When Popeye was singing the verse it went at a steady pace and would even slow down to deliver the last few lines at the end of the cartoon, with the toot toot on his pipe. However the tune was also played very fast and in a staccato way when the exciting action was taking place, and it was at this pace that we often sang the parodies. Remember Bluto's and Olive's version of the bawdy song 'Abraham Brown', 'Barnacle Bill the Sailor'? What a pair of voices! Oh, and Olive's 'I want a clean shaven man'. Bluto and Popeye scrapping to get a decent shave because of Olive's song and at the end she walks away with a naval officer with a big bushy beard. Those were the days!
