not necessarily tear jerkers...

I am gathering tunes for my radio show this afternoon
and decided to focus on mothers (and grandmothers)
Greg Brown sings a couple of good ones about his
grandmothers...Canned Goods and Ella Mae,
and Gillan Welch sing "I had a real good mother and a dad"
Sugar Hill records has a disc full of mother songs..
called queen of my heart...

including 40 years old and livin in Mom's garage...
by the Austin Lounge lizards,
and thank god for mamma

got any others that are favorites for you?

If you ever still need ideas about this theme, one of my all-time favorites--a wonderful song, with a great message is Mama's Hand, by Hazel Dickens ( especially as sung by Lynn Morris). Are you familiar with that one?

Too late for your show, but MY mother sang this when rocking us:

Backward, turn backward O time in thy flight
Make me a child again, just for tonight;
Mother come back from the echoless shore-
Take me again to your heart as of yore.
Kiss from my forehead the furrows of care,
Smooth the few silver threads out of my hair;
Over my slumbers your loving watch keep-
Rock me to sleep, Mother, rock me to sleep.

Two more verses that I know; a very sentimental song- and it always put me right to sleep!    Jean

When I asked for "Tramp On The Street" Saturday (several tradmusic/roots programs) everyone responded with a vocal questionmark, "Billy Joe Shaver". I thought he'd put out a version of it, too, until I googled it. What I wanted was the one Hank W. made famous (tho' he didn't write it); has a chorus that starts:
"He was some mother's darlin'.
He was some mother's son;
Once he was fair and once he was young...."

Nobody got it(sad sigh). That's a great song. Would like to hear it some. George Jones did a version, too, I think.    Tw
