looking for old martin picks that are tortise shell and have a thicker layer at the top. Found one in a used mandolin case and it is a great pick. Anyone know what they are called or where I can find some?

Hi, B. Mooody. I did a google search and the first site I came to had this review of their "Tortis Picks":

I got the picks in the mail today. I'm blown away. They are more that I could've expected. They've instantly replaced my old tortoise shell as my most prized pick. I would've never known the difference if someone had told me these were real tortoise shell. Except these are even better.

There are lots more reviews plus a bunch of info on them. Hope this helps and welcome to the Mudcat!

Currently it's illegal to sell real tortoise shell of any sort. However I have heard of folks buying antique combs, compacts and jewelery made from tortoise sheel and turning those into picks.

I heard a story that Tony Rice wandered into a music store in Paris a few years back and found a whole stash of real picks that the owner sold him dirt cheap. Like several dozen for about ten bucks. That may be just an inernet rumor though.
