What is the traditional title for the tune used for Popeye The Sailor Man? (No need to post the tune, we all know what it sounds like.)

I'm not sure of the title past the point where lyrics were added, but the original music has apparently been around for a while as a variant of the 'Sailor's Hornpipe'

Thank you Bruce, I expected you would have it.

That should be Ford's 'Traditional Music of America', 1940 (Da Capo reprint of 1978). I must confess the hornpipe doesn't sound much like the 'Popeye' tune as I remember it.

Those two tunes were certainly used on the "Popeye" cartoons, but neither one is the theme song. I wonder if we'll be able to solve this one....

Just a side line the trad tune for the cartoon "Captain Pugwash" is "The Trumpet Hornpipe"

Just a note, I was told that the tune is about 400 years old.

Words to "The Sailor's Hornpipe"

We'll have another drink till the boat shoves off (2x)
We'll go to mother rackets & we'll pawn our monkey jackets
And we'll have another drink till the boat shoves off

Alice, Which tune did you hear is about 400 years old, the Sailor's hornpipe, the Trumpet hornpipe (Capt Pugwash) or the tune for "I'm Popeye the sailor man..."?
