01 Jul 06 - 05:35 PM (#1773718) Subject: Why no Saturday Folk in South Lincs? From: GUEST,Katherine The discussion on the slow/learning thread and on starting a practice session near Lincoln prompts me to ask why there's no Folk club functioning on a Saturday night in South Lincolnshire? Would a slow/learning session or a Club be likely to get off the ground on a Saturday night? What do people think? Katherine |
02 Jul 06 - 02:57 AM (#1773876) Subject: RE: Why no Saturday Folk in South Lincs? From: Strollin' Johnny Not just South Lincs Katherine, there's naff all in North Lincs on a Saturday either. Maybe it's difficult to get suitable venues on Saturdays - pubs are full of lager-swillers showing their boobs, bellies and britches, throwing abuse and bottles at one another and spending like sailors, why would any landlord want a handful of clapped-out old folkie-farts in his pub, wailing on interminably about jolly ploughboys, behaving in a civilised fashion, and demanding a couple of pints of decent beer? LOL! |
02 Jul 06 - 04:10 AM (#1773891) Subject: RE: Why no Saturday Folk in South Lincs? From: Zany Mouse It might not be down to just the pubs. Saturday night is the main night of a folk festival and, especially at this time of year, you will find that many folkies are off travelling to festivals at the weekends. Maybe one would take off more later on in the year. Rhiannon |

02 Jul 06 - 12:15 PM (#1774103) Subject: RE: Why no Saturday Folk in South Lincs? From: GUEST,Katherine Thanks for the input folks, but I'm still puzzled. Some pubs have separate rooms often upstairs, where the normal "lager-swillers showing their boobs, bellies and britches, throwing abuse and bottles at one another and spending like sailors," don't usually manage to reach and where the landlord/lady might be glad to tuck real-ale swilling Folkies away to quietly swell the coffers and twang their weird instruments. As to Festivals, they don't operate for most of the year, do they? The club I used to belong to in Sussex before moving to Lincolnshire was a Saturday club meeting in a venue like I've described and flourished even though people went to Festivals! Thanks for letting me know about Brandy Wharf. Cheers folks! Katherine |
03 Jul 06 - 07:22 AM (#1774598) Subject: RE: Why no Saturday Folk in South Lincs? From: Strollin' Johnny Unfortunately, Katherine, the bass lines produced by the obscenely loud jukeboxes they have downstairs do tend to make their presence heard (and felt!), very offputting when you're just at the point in the song where the jolly ploughboy dies because the pretty sheep isn't interested any more! LOL! If it's not lack of venues then I don't know the answer - it's certainly not the excitement of Saturday night telly that keeps people in! Like you, I'd be delighted if someone with entrepreneurial dash and vigour decided to run a Saturday-night singaround or sesh, but don't ask me to do it - I've enough on me plate at the moment! And BTW, the festival season runs from early April to late November. Good luck with your search, post on here if you get off the ground. S:0) |
03 Jul 06 - 07:51 AM (#1774614) Subject: RE: Why no Saturday Folk in South Lincs? From: Leadfingers Something I HAVE mentined before , is the fact that Pub Landlords have an increasing desire to make Folkies PAY to bring customers to their establishments . It takes a Flourishing Club to be able afford as much as fifty pounds for the use of an upstairs room , as well as the problem of Juke Box Noise interfering ! |

08 Jul 06 - 04:02 AM (#1778786) Subject: RE: Why no Saturday Folk in South Lincs? From: Strollin' Johnny Maybe nobody told Jim that it had closed, Katherine? He's very good with news like that but he can't report stuff if nobody tells him! It's a fact that, when a new club or session starts, those running it bust their guts to advertise it, but when one fizzles out they often walk away without a word to anyone. Could be that's what happened here? BTW, Jim's based in Scunthorpe - a long way from Holbeach for W.O.M. to travel! Maybe you'd like to let him know about the closed session? S:0) |
