The fRoots Messageboard...Do you post?

Hi Guys!

Someone mentioned to me today, that over on the fRoots board, Ian Anderson has started a thread asking for people's opinions on why, despite seemingly to have a large amount of registered people, very few of them actually post on there.

Now....I WOULD pop over and tell him why it's so quiet, but.....he banned me! ;0)

So...WHY do YOU think his board is so quiet?

Here's the original thread from over there:

http://froots.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1492

I may tell you why his board (imo) is *so* quiet a bit later on! ;0)

What value is there in debating why another forum is quiet or has this or that type of posts or who has been banned and who is part of what gang?

I'd rather be discussing music rather than talking shops.

Er...I think that's why Ian started his thread, to try to discover why there is so little discussion of music on his board. Perhaps by chattering about it over here, it may encourage some folk to go over to his board and have a natter....about music.....

I think Jon got it in one with his remark

"more importantly, I feel this is a difficult board to post on if one wishes to express a view that is at odds with say "froots" or aguably with a "froots board core". I'm not saying that dissenting views are not allowed, I'm just commenting on a personal feeling."

A number of former fRoots board posters have told me stories over the months of why they no longer post there. Several of them are erudite and witty contributors to the Radio 2 Board. It backs up my own observation that dissenting views are certainly NOT encouraged on the fRoots board. It isn't just a "personal feeling" Jon. I am sure we are not alone.

Thanks for the comment Tom, but I feel that this is not the place for this discussion. It's just another "troll thread" as far as I'm concerned.

Nope, this is a 'widening-out' of Ian Anderson's discussion Jon. I'd appreciate it if *you* didn't turn it into your usual 'Lizzie Bashing' one though. (perhaps you should start your own thread for that, thank you)

I think it's a great shame that his board isn't busier, he has an entire world of music that *should* be being discussed, lit up and spoken about in joyous terms....

It doesn't make sense to me....

Tom, Jon

I used to get lots of pleasure and value talking about the way to play music, instruments, style, technique and material, principally because I am a musician and Mudcat and the Beeb F&A were ideal places to do that. However I've been worn out by contentious discussions and furthermore, because of the absence of intercourse with like minded people, I'm spending more time with my instruments now rather than hanging about on the internet, which is probably a good thing anyway. The fRoots forum has always seemed to concentrate on discussing genres and talking about music rather than aspects that I'm interested in, which is not invalid in itself, but just not the place for me, especially as I feel out of my depth or in contention with some of the contributors. I rather regret that that the Beeb F&A is no longer a place I feel at home in either. I left that place because of the rows and even though it is quieter now, most if not all of the other people that I used to correspond with have left.

Hey ho. The lyrics of Adieu Adieu are waiting.

That's argaubly not a bad thing... Wish I was doing more but I hate playing on my own and this TT spell of mine has put playing in sessions completely on hold for a while. tried it during Cromer FOTP and had a nightmare of a time, getting worse as I tried to force myself through nerves...

Hey Jon, instead of leading some tunes, just join in with what is going on, maybe quietly at first, until you get some confidence back. Who knows, at the end of a set, you might feel inspired to go the next step.

Get well soon buddy.

Back to this thread topic, depsite what I may have said in message #2, I guess we have the opportunity to be postive and ask "What is it about a forum that makes us want to contribute?" I guess I've already made my reply back in message #9

Well....I would of course be discussing it on the fRoots board, but er....I can't...because Grumpy Ed decided to chop off my head for a thread on the Oysterband and another on whether the 'f' word should still be being used...and using ooh...about two similes.

Right...so that's that cleared up then.

And far from being what the, yet *again* usual suspects who follow me round, are saying..this er...is actually trying to get to the bottom of something which I think is a very great shame.

If more people take notice of Ian's board because of this thread, and perhaps go in there and post...then that can only be a *good* thing.

If others want, as always.....Jon Freeman...YAWN!....to have a 'Lizzie Bashing' thread then please go ahead, rather than keep taking *this* thread er.....off thread. Thanks..(second time I've said that guys!)

I should say so!! Quick Nurse....the screens!!!

And now.....back to Grumpy Ed's board.......

I also read the article about why he's quit. What a nightmare thing to happen. Read Ben Watt's book "Patient" for a description of what Churg-Strauss disease is like to go through.

I'll probably look in to the fRoots forum again, too. Thanks for the pointer.

Lizzie.
I've always considered The Cat, R2 F&A, fRoots, and Charlies boards, to be about like minded people exchanging information, and sharing knowledge.
Yes, I'm only human too, and sometimes get sucked into some Troll Fest. (Bulmer/Celtic, for instance.....Nooooo! don't start that one again.)
If I find a genuine question that I have the answer to, then I will reply.
I credit most people on these boards with a fair amount of intelligence. They have heard about Mr Lakeman, and SOH, and don't need it continually rammed down their throats.
On the Cat, it's very useful to me, that I can discuss Concertinas with people around the world (Hello to Bob Bolton in Oz !)
Have just helped someone on the Beeb board doing research into the songs and tunes of the East Riding of Yorkshire, who the best person is to contact.

That is the beauty and purpose of these boards IMHO.

It's always interesting to get a take on what is going on the other side of the pond, and indeed have made several friends because of it.
So Lizzie, great respect. but, sniping about other message boards on Mudcat only makes you look a bit bitter.

Thank God Max has not introduced Smilies.

Ralph

PS. Saw Charlie G a week or so ago, and he's in good spirits, but sad to have had to give up his R London show. He's still doing his World Service prog though. It's not so much of a strain.

Later!

"....So Lizzie, great respect. but, sniping about other message boards on Mudcat only makes you look a bit bitter...."

Actually Ralph....if you'd care to look....I've not been 'sniping' about Ian or his board. And far from being 'bitter' I've always found it quite amusing to have been banned for using Smilies! ;0)

I'm merely broadening the discussion about why the fRoots board has gone so quiet.

I'd suggest you join Jon's 'Lizzie Bashing' thread if you've anything further to say about me though. Thanks.....

Oh...and Ralph..by the way....I too have helped people on the R2 board you know....quite a few people have had the kindness to come over to Myspace and tell me that they've discovered all sorts of different music from reading some of my posts. It's interesting though isn't it, that despite me having written about dozens and dozens of musicians, singers, dancers etc....all you and the usual suspects ever 'throw at me' is Show of Hands or Seth Lakeman.

Why Ralph....as I remember, people even started to buy 'Flat Earth' because of what was being said on the R2 board, not in their millions admittedly, but perhaps...just now and again you'd care to take a look into some of the things I've said....

Take the blinkers off Ralph!

And I'm surprised you've not been over to try and help Ian sort out what the problem is, as he has specifically asked people, which I have to say I admire him for doing, because that can't have been an easy decision.

And now...back to the Lizzie Bashing from ALL the usual suspects!!

Although, I'd much prefer to keep on thread...but...whatever turns you on I guess.....

Lizzie, I've no desire to start a Lizzie bashing thread. I just sometimes respond to or about your trolling in other threads. Rather than bash you as you call it, I'd simply have prefered it that you hadn't started another what's wrong with another board thread.

Opening up oppertinities to attack other boards never in my works out even if the motivation is (ulinke in your case) done with misguided good intentions and is pretty well guranteed to put contributers to both boards in question in a difficult position (even without people opening with comments something like "The BBC pathetic gang"). The next step from in, at least on newsgroups can be a cross posted flame war.

It had actually almost sold out when you discovered said CD. It now has done.

I'm with GUEST Jon on this one. Enjoy your MySpace site. I'm sure it's very good.

All the mentioned sites above, are populated by clever and knowledgable people, and also newcomers who (to some) might ask questions that to the majority, may seem fatuous and inane. But, for them, they are fundamental in their particular learning curve. Both the former and the latter need to be treated with respect.

What nobody needs is someone preaching to the converted.

Instead of endlessly talking about your favourite artists (I'm assuming that I've been deleted from your Christmas card list) Why not start playing music.

It's quite good fun actually

He Banned you (as did Radio2) because you were taking up an awful lot of space, banging on about your favourite bands incessantly, (who everybody else had heard about years ago) and deciding that without "Said Bands" all our lives would be impoverished.

If the fRoots board appears a bit quiet at the moment, well, for one It's Summer....and 2 You're not clogging it up with unnecessary verbiage.

I would recommend that you promote your favourite artists on your MySpace site, Well Done. Hope it continues well.

This may seem a bit harsh, but, in reality, there are a lot of musicians out there, for whom your antics have actually been very negative.

Think long and hard about replying.

Why on earth not?

Subject: RE: The fRoots Messageboard...Do you post?
From: Lizzie Cornish

Ralph...for your information.

FACT 1: I am no longer banned by the BBC, I choose not to go there.

FACT 2: I was banned, for one week, for repeatedly asking the BBC to give me an explanation on WHY they closed down threads on *certain* artists, and *not* others. I am STILL waiting to hear from them.

However, there now follows a very long post, for which I make no apologies:

And now, back to the subject of this thread:

Part of the problem, imo, with Ian's board, can also be seen very clearly on here. Messageboards are often 'ruled' by small groups of people who want things run 'their way' and their way only. Take the BBC board for example, it states this on the board 'details', which I have copied and pasted:

"A place to explore and enjoy this genre and talk about gigs."

That is what I and others often did. It does *not* however, in *any* way state this:

'This is a board soley for traditional musicians, preferably English, preferably who know each other, preferably with no humour, no empathy, no tolerance and no compassion.....to come in and talk entirely amongst themselves about music and instruments, to the exclusion of all other 'non-musicians' at all times. It is also a board to be used for very personal remarks about other posters. If these wretched 'other posters' (henceforth known as 'trolls') **dare** to remain on this board and talk about subjects which *they* deem suitable/enjoyable/interesting then they shall be bullied rotten, deeply insulted and chased away...etc. etc.'

Nope! The BBC board states *none* of that, just the first quote only.

Now then, Ian's board states this, again, copied and pasted from his site:

"From our own correspondents - the electronic mailbag! Carefully crafted arguments, theories, reactions, diatribes, stuff you'd like to know etc. Unseemly personal squabbling will be zapped. We reserve the right to dispense with correspondents who are terminally boring or wilfully provocative (a.k.a. "trolls"). And not for news announcements - these go on the board below . . . "

Now, that doesn't strike me as being very welcoming actually. I'd get rid of that completely and put something far warmer on. I'm not sure what Ian's definition of a 'troll' is. Or 'terminally boring' either. Obviously he has a low tolerance threshold about certain things. But it's my opinion that the fRoots board is 'controlled' by the same small group of people who wanted to control the BBC one, and that is the group who will ONLY permit what THEY deem suitable to be spoken about.

That is NOT freedom of speech. It is *not* open-minded, it is not fair, welcoming, or just, either. Also, if you have a particular poster on your board, who uses their knowledge purely as a weapon, to destroy the confidence of others, to belittle and humiliate....then guess what? Loads of posters, who may be sitting 'out there' *desperate* to write something on your shiny board....WON'T!

In my opinion, the sooner Ian becomes far more lenient about what is and is not allowed to be talked about on his board, and more vigilant about the way that other posters are often insulted by er...mainly one person...the better and busier his board will be.

Ian Anderson has done a huge amount for World Music and for many, many musicians, but....he could do far more for many others as well. His board *should* be buzzing with sparkling threads and posts. There literally IS a whole world of music out there....and he needs, imo, to ensure that his board is used for the *right* purposes and that is, for the open, friendly, warm, humourous, interesting and *sometimes* serious discussion, of some wonderful music.

And far from hitting the man whilst he's away, I'm trying to get others to come forward with *their* opinions on how it could be made better. Because ALL music is world music! Yes...even that which is discussed on Mudcat...yes..EVEN (altogether now..) Show of Hands and Seth Lakeman! And Ian deliberately put that thread on just before he went away and he *announced* he was going away, so therefore we can safely assume that he WANTS discussion about it. And the more views he has...the better he will be able to sort it all out!

I personally think that he desperately needs to let down those fences, take down his 'radar', open up his boundaries, enjoy his posters.....and RELAX!! And then...THEN...he may be *very* pleasantly surprised and his board may start to bring in loads of people who will yatter on and others who will read it to find out masses about some stunning World Music. And below you will find a miniscual selection of World Music and THAT is what Ian's board should be about...yup...all those different musicians and many, many more.

And I fully expect that people will come on here now and say that a lot of the music above should *not* be discussed on the fRoots board or anywhere else...and *that* to me is part of the whole problem. If you want a narrow view of music, then you will get a narrow audience.

The Folk World is *not* 'THEM * US'....it is '*WE*'

Besides, even though we're now in the dungeon....(never been down here before in one of my threads...it's a bit dark isn't it).....this thread is *still* about..altogether now...'broadening the discussion about the fRoots board'

Erm...can someone tell me why thread after thread IS allowed 'upstairs' when it's about the BBC board, where people do *nothing* but slag off the BBC or Mike Harding, but you CAN'T have a discussion about the fRoots board without being put in the dungeon?????

And I fully accept that I've had a good go about the BBC board in the Musical Racism thread, but that's because of what they did/are doing to stifle discussion on certain musicians. But...I've seen loads of other threads about the BBC and no-one bats an eyelid about them! Hmmmmmm.....I think we need to get Sherlock Holmes on to this one...

Is the Count of Monte Cristo in here with me? Anyway, I know how to get out....I've read his book! ;0)

Subject: RE: The fRoots Messageboard...Do you post?
From: Lizzie Cornish

Nope....the personal conflict wasn't started by me MacKenzie. Take a look above and see.

There IS no hidden agenda either. I've not once 'attacked' Ian or his board...just kept right on track....with a few diversions to wallop people who seem to think that they have a right to be downright rude, whilst I have none whatsoever to respond.

I've recently fallen into a whole vast space of world music. Ian A. and I actually agree about Myspace as well. He's not daft or driven by 'hidden agendas' about Myspace...he sees the value of it all, and I think, he's doing two articles shortly about artists that he's 'fallen over' in Myspace.

I really do think it's a shame that his board isn't being used for the much broader discussion, particularly with the discovery of Myspace and the music it's 'letting loose' into the world.

If you don't believe me how quiet it is, then take a look for yourself! And if you're happy to have a whole board go to waste well...there's zilch I can do to change your mind is there!!

But...you carry on spinning and twisting MacKenzie. That's what you're best at it would seem. Since I've been on Mudcat you've not said one decent thing to me, hence the new nickname I gave you the other day. I'll leave you to moan on....but, as I say, take a look back and count the Moaning Minnie posts from all the usual suspects....round and round they go...wherever I go....

Are you sure I don't 'know' you from the 'hoodies' on the R2 board as well MacKenzie?

And now...back..yet again (sigh) to fRoots!

Blimey! If Ian Anderson were paying me for every time I've mentioned his board, I'd probably be a millionaire by now! ;0)

If Cromwell had gone Ireland and given out sweets, put central heating in the cottages, paid anybody's rent who couldn't afford it, bought a few drinks, learned the language.... I'm sure the Irish would still be raising a glass to him.

However he didn't.

Similarly fRoots pretty much ignored a whole generation of English artists in the folk clubs, letting them wither on the vine - preferring to tackle other more germane matters.

We've managed and survived without the record companies, the media, the Arts Coucil and pretty much everybody. And now theres the internet, we really don't need them.

Although the thread was titularly about a non Mudcat music site, it was started with the intention of hurling criticism at those who dare to disagree with LC. Ergo it could have been about the price of bread or the South Korean missiles. Not only that, but if you look back through this thread you'll be hard put to find anything about music posted in it.

What fRoots does is 'promote local musics from out there, from at home and around the world', What it doesn't do is give space to music that has no sense of roots, place or community. Go figure.

WLD clearly hasn't been reading the mag (or what we talk about in the forum where many complain, possibly with some justification, that the approach is proportionately too anglophile).

To take just the past few months (or else we'll be here all day), fR printed mag has featured a 4-page Britfolk spread, a cover feature on 'the new folk uprising' (including The Gloworms, Lou Rhodes, The 18th Day Of May and Seth Lakeman (NB 2 months ahead of Songlines) and another cover feature on 'the rise and rise of the younger tradition' with The Devil's Interval.

Of course, WLD might be regretting the lack of pieces on blokes in the corner (complete with beard, pewter mug and tie-tied frock who have failed for many a year even to get the tune right and learn all the words of the same 'party piece' at their local folk club. I don't. I say hurrah. The outside world can do without the propagation of this image.

It therefore behoves you not to abuse this tolerence, but I somehow can't see you taking any more notice of that than you have of anything else that people have said.

Sorry if that gets up your nose, but...hey ho!

Oh and please....don't feel that you have to 'tolerate' me at all. I couldn't give a damn about people like you, or most of the others on this thread, who are, imo, the very ones who are doing much damage to some wonderful music, with their blinkered, narrow-minded, aggressive and bitter attitudes, about anyone who is not from their 'club' but who DARES to like Folk Music!

I am not of your 'club' John....I never will be. I do not do 'clubs'. I am inclusive, not exclusive.

However, I will certainly NOT be following you around this board or others, and telling you who or what you can or cannot talk about, or how you should be writing your thoughts about music you love...OR taking digs at you for no apparent reason whatsoever. I will though, occasionally answer you back, if you are personally rude to me.

Nobody has 'followed LC around'. She landed on this site by some mischance a year ago to blether on about some people trying to cobble up an alternative festival in her home town and managed to put off quite a number of prospective punters in the process. I've been a Mudcat member for more than three years and posted as an occasional guest for a couple of years before that. Others at whom she attempts to scatter-gun her extremely limited and distorted 'knowledge' and order around have been here for much longer and have proved their value by their contributions.

She's here now as she has, actually, nowhere else to go. Giok says her 'total self absorption and imperviousness to all criticism, constructive or otherwise, is a wonder to behold'. I say it's worth a try to stop 'beholding' and turn your backs, close your ears and unfold the shitproof umbrella. Enough is a whole lot more than enough. We all have our lives to live and our music to play. Don't we?

If that were true - what would it matter - as no one is being forced to open, read or respond?

And if you feel this - why would you think that others on our forum would wish to see or pay any attemtion to your posted judgement of another?

Why do you also assume that any poster should be 'pervious' to your criticism of them and are at fault for ignoring your unbidden criticism and judgement of them?

Why do you wish to prevent others from contributing by requesting that a thread be closed? Is it not possible for you just to ignore it?

Interesting threads, both this one and the fRoots one. Glad the thread title piqued my curiousity.

Went over to fRoots and read the thread which is the subject of this thread.

The fRoots thread certainly makes Mudcat look like a bastion of warmth and fuzziness. In the old days we would've spoken of "bad vibes."

If Ian Anderson actually reads the thread to the bitter end and does not get it, he will never get it.

P.S. By the way, I didn't post a message on fRoots because I'd have to register first.

If the single thread I browsed is representative it seems to me that Ian has a problem.

If his message board is turning off potential subscribers or turning actual subscribers into former subscribers he'd be better off eliminating it.

Hmmmm. Just finished reading this and the linked-to thread at fRoots forum.

I agree, this and the linked-to thread are appropriate, on-topic discussion items, whether the discussion is here or on another board. There is an online marketplace of folk/world/blues forums these days, and it is perfectly appropriate to have conversations about the positives and negatives of them, especially when so many posters inhabit more than one of them, as is the case here.

So, the question at hand. Why Ian's playground isn't the most popular on the block amongst the sort of posters he wishes to attract?

After perusing the fRoots forum a bit, I'd have to say the problem begins with Ian's condescending attitude and overbearing arrogance. It ends with the fact that like attracts like. He has managed his forum in such a way that he has a forum full of IAA/fRoots sycophants.

Then there is his forum doppelganger, Diane Easby/Countess Rottweiller. She is masterful at yanking the welcome mat out from under nearly anyone who dares post, doesn't she?

Sometimes the problem with these sorts of online forums being sewer-like is technical, sometimes it's ideological, sometimes it's the inhabitants of the forum itself.

In the case of fRoots, I believe it's the last on the list above.

Nope it IS about the music Manitas. I said in an earlier post that I wished a far wider range of music could be discussed there.

Threads on the BBC which truly have nothing to do with music...or pure Mike Harding Bashing ones are allowed on here all the time. I think this thread is important because there aren't that many places where world music can be discussed openly...which is crazy in a way because ALL music is World Music.....

So any helpful suggestions to get more people to take an interest is very beneficial.

No-one has posted on that board since 10.18am this morning (it's now 4.20pm GMT)....yet there are thousand upon thousand of World Music artists. The more people who know about them, the better.

And here are two more:

Martyn Joseph:

fRoots doesn't deserve to be discussed in The Dungeon. World music is important.......we're all in the *same* world.

Nothing wrong with discussing the management of the forums one participates in. Which begs the question, why do so many forum participants feel threatened by this subject?

Every forum/message board has an elite group of alpha posters. How much they are allowed to dominate is a question of how the board/forum is managed, and how much rope that elite group is given by management to hang those who dissent from their party line. Doesn't matter whether the forum is about music or cars or toothpaste.

I haven't even mentioned LC, and don't have any experience with her in any of the music forums I frequent. She is the thread originator, but before coming into this thread, I had never heard of her. I don't frequent the BBC or fRoots forums, nor do I wade into the Anglo music threads here at Mudcat.

If I have responded to anyone in this thread, it was Guest Russ. When I finally got down to his post, I decided to read the link provided to fRoots.

Sometimes posters don't have hidden agendas, and just take things at face value. Now, I don't expect the conspiracy theorists like yourself and a few other Mudcat members to accept that, but it is true. Not all of us has the energy to participate in the conspiracy theory dynamic so many here love to engage in.

Guest Maggie May sounds awfully like a self-confessed geography teacher with a penchant for wandering off into yukky Norwegian jazz who stalked off the fRoots forum when Ian remarked that not only had the plot been lost but that no-one had clapped eyes on it for some time. Seem to remember it arose from said teacher's inability to recognise that the cittern on a Spindel recording was out of tune. Might be wrong about the details . . . but the cittern was still out of tune. Breathtaking to accuse Suzanne of being a 'net nanny'.

Susan,

If you'll excuse me, I think you'll find that, so far, I'm about the ONLY person who *has* put links into world music and spoken about wanting Ian's board to be busier and broader....so that more and more musicians can be spoken about.

With respect, I'd appreciate it if you didn't tell me what I can or can't, should or shouldn't be doing. I'm a free person, this is an open messageboard and many of the people on here have been trying to 'control' me for a very long time. I'm not having any of it....

Therefore, I'd be most grateful if you would direct your advice about world music to them and not to me. Perhaps you would also like to tell them to leave this thread to those who are interested in it, rather than using it for a personal 'bashing' thread, as they do with so many others.

Many thanks.

Lizzie

Since my post followed yours, you must have assumed I was replying to you. Well, I wasn't, but I am sorry my post wasn't more specific that it was a response to Lizzie Cornish.

Diane, I think that you are wrong in your guess at Maggie-May's identity but I think that highlights another problem with this type of thread.

I don't want to get in a debate as to whether or not I'm right but, supposing I'm right. What happens then? Word gets back to the BBC board, possibly a row breaks out over there. Possibly this person comes over here justifyably angry about being dragged into this mess and adds to the chaos in this thread, etc.

Jon, I haven't a clue whether who I think Guest MM is coincides with who you think I might mean. The point is that there can be no justification for Guest MM to be hurling such patronising crap at Suzanne, a respected and long-standing Mudcat member.

Equally, the appalling LC is completely out of order in her inexplicable, self-appointed recruiting campaign for candidates to emulate her drivel at fR, a forum from which her multiplicity of logins have had to be expunged by Rentokil.

Subject: RE: The fRoots Messageboard...Do you post?
From: GUEST,Maggie May

No, I'm not a Norwegian bicycle enthusiast. I'm North American.

Yes Jon, life can get very messy, can't it? And chaotic. Which begs the question, why try so hard to control the uncontrollable?

There is no sin in discussing the management of music fora by the people who participate in them. Yes, the discussions will most always degenerate into character assassinations of one sort or the other, because the personalities that populate the forums are human.

So what? We aren't killing each other. We aren't blowing up markets. We aren't destroying ecosystems, or driving species to extinction. We are talking. If the talk gets too belligerent, participants have the ability to turn it off and walk away.

Why do so many people feel the need to have an authority figure breathing down our necks and slapping down our keyboards when the discussion gets dicey? If someone doesn't like the direction a conversation is going, they should leave it. But to insist that it be shut down, or that people stop contributing, or talking about a certain person, or whatever, it gets very tiresome and boring.

Sometimes one needs to be able to say 'the problem is with so and so'.

In this instance, I said that. I think the problem posed by Ian Anderson on his own message board, is him, the way he has managed the board to surround himself with sycophants, and sent a big dog (Countess Richard here, apparently, Diane something or other on fRoots) out to bark and bite on his behalf.

I said that because there doesn't seem to be a technical problem with the fRoots message board (it functions fine from what I can tell). It also doesn't seem to be a problem of conflicting ideologies. That leaves people/personalities. I just named them by name, is all.

I don't expect there to be a collapse in the world economy for having done that, so maybe folks should just step back, take a few breaths, and ponder my take on it. They don't have to agree with me. But it would be interesting to actually see the subject discussed, rather than derailed by a bunch of fraidy cats, who fear a breakdown in society as we know it if the conversation gets dicey.

Ian Anderson is far away (in Sarawak I think). He 'sends' me nowhere, I am neither his Rottweiler nor his poodle. If anyone would like to check this with him next week, his contact details are on the fR website, though I'm sure he'd prefer it if you just took my word for it.

Some other ill-informed moron was speculating only the other day that I was on the way out from the fR forum because I'd disagreed with the Ed . . . as often as twice recently. Ian's quite keen on diatribes actually, as long as they are carefully crafted, musically -related and well argued. Apart from the Russian porn spammers, only about six people have had their log-in revoked in almost two years. And jolly well deserved it was in each case.

Finally, as for my nickname, I am heartily sick (and amazed) at having to explain it so often in circles where a minimal knowledge of the Child Ballads might have been expected: #68, Young Hunting, floozie throws rat Earl Richard into well/River Clyde, talking parrots, underwater candles (sometimes) . . . It's one of the best-known ballads there is. If you don't know THAT, what exactly are you doing here?

It matters not if you are doing Mr. Anderson's bidding or not, Countess. You are de facto functioning as the forum rottweiller, and he has done nothing to stop it.

If Mr. Anderson is genuinely interested in attracting a better clientele (which I rather doubt from the looks of his forum and his reputation (especially in North America) for being an arrogant, self-promoting boor), he first look to his own forum disclaimer, then his forum management, and then throw your pretentious ass out the door.

I have rarely run into a force of such negativity online as you, Countess.

And I doubt if I was alone in this state of abysmal ignorance.
To be quite frank: performance standards being what they are on the folk scene, I'm sorry to say I've generally dropped off by the time they get past the first thirty or so verses of a Child ballad.

I find the fRoots thread fascinating for all the wrong reasons.

This thread is increasingly fascinating in the same way.

Anyway, in the fRoots thread the opening post was a essentially a request for information.

As of 2:05 PM EST (USA)

Good news:
There were 29 replies.

Bad news:
There were only 12 different posters

Worse news:
A single poster was responsible for 12 (41%) of the total responses.

For those who posted more than once, only the initial post responded directly to Ian's original request for information. The additional posts were responses to the unnamed mega-poster.

Yes, I have better things to do.
Yes, I feel dirty.

Twas in the early morning
Of a brightly-lit Sunday,
I was cooking for the family,
Just a modest, quick souffle.

I heard a knock upon the door
A knock so bright and gay,
I knew it was the gentle hand
Of the lovely Maggie May.

Her words were kind and caring
And her voice was clear yet faint;
She said that sometimes Maggie May
But other times she Mayn't.

Now come along...cheer up! This is much more interesting than what's happening over on the fRoots board at present. All the Moaning Minnies are gathering over there and complaining about this thread, er....despite being the very ones who er......made this thread into what it is.

Don't you just love 'em! ;0)

But guess what.....NONE of them are talking about World Music!! Isn't that weird?

Now HERE is what they should be talking about! Oh...Bill come on..slip off your shoes...socks as well...that's it.....now then.....get those hips moving and boogie on down with me....that's it!

This is where you really show yourself up LC, you make your hip flip remarks about people who have been around this site for a lot longer than you have. If you took the trouble to ease yourself in slowly and get to know people, you'd know what country they come from, and you'd know their name was Susan and not Suzanne.
Instead you come in here telling people 2 and 3 times your age what they should be doing and what they should like music wise, and generally imposing yourself where you're not wanted.
As you are more than a bit loopy, and you are in a nest where you don't belong I have a name for you too. [Yes it works both ways]
Henceforth I shall call you Cuckoo Cornish, don't you think it has a nice alliterative ring to it?

168 messages and counting. Lots of activity but not much being said in this thread. Now if you like that sort of thing there is no problem, you have got it here. Why would you want to repeat the same stuff on the fRoots board ?

No doubt like a lot people on this list, yourself included, I belong to a number of boards. I post more to some than to others. Not all of the boards are the same. What would be the point of belonging to a number of boards if they all posted the same stuff ?

Variety is the spice of life.

Enjoy.

It was Countess Rottweiller who was calling Susan, 'Suzanne'. I don't read Lizzie's posts.

And I just checked in at the fRoots board. Only one mention of this thread that I saw. But it is telling that nearly every post in that thread mentions less than ideal conditions on the board when they post. That tells me there is most definitely an intimidation factor at play.

About what I'd expect, considering whose board it is, and who it's current alpha inhabitants are though.

The purpose of this thread was to abuse another forum and its users and has been partly successful.
It has, in super troll fashion, set poster against poster.

It's interesting though, F dim.

If one looked at the replies in this thread, and lack of related comment about this thread in the froots board as the measure, Mudcat has come off the worst by a approaching 180 posts from a "being the place to enter into rows" perspective in this pointless episode.

One could of course use other measures and find whoever or whatever "guilty", "the best" or "the worst" but I don't think any board comes out looking good from this type of thread.

MacKenzie, I'm very flattered to think that you think that I'm three times younger than yourself! Ye Gods! The Botox cream works!

Rainy.....leave me be...just because you can't moan at me any more on the BBC doesn't mean that you have to come over here and do it.

Siddlemouth Folk Festival is doing extraordinarily well thank you my sweethearts.

MacKenzie....I didn't call Susan....Suzanne....so I await your apology on bended knee with baited breath!

AND...apart from a very few other posters.....I'm the one who has been sticking to the subject of this thread the most....and putting all the links in!!

AND as Grumpy Ed's board is so Grumpy at present, unlike this one, which is sparkling with Fizzy Fun Posters....apart from those who pompously assume that I apparently have to ask permission from them to even blink (!!!!).....I thought that I would give you some more World Music which I KNOW Grumpy Ed would approve of most definitely....and would love to talk about on his board:

Yes....TIGER MOTH!

"No..not that one....!" ;0) (Sorry Ian, couldn't resist that one!) ;0)

THIS one:

And finally:

Ian Anderson, yes, the man who wrote my song 'Everybody's Killing Me':

http://www.myspace.com/vulturama

But...it's not on there anymore!

And now....if you'll excuse me....I'm going out to watch John Tams singing, down by the river, at Otterton Mill! Because...that man is the most gentle, sweet-natured, wise, intelligent, humourous, empathetic and sensitive performer I have ever had the good luck to discover!

And I shall be taking my children along too, because they also love the music of John Tams....AND there should be thread after thread about him on fRoots....but there isn't................

So..I shall leave you all to enjoy yourselves and continue talking about World Music and the discussion of it, or not, on the fRoots board.

Lizzie :0)

PS: And I am NOT a troll, but a Trollop!! Could you at least get your descriptions correct!!

PPS: And MacKenzie....you be sure to bring me your apology upon a golden platter by 9.00am tomorrow morning else I shall turn you into a haggis!!......And please ensure it has the correct amount of grovelling in it MacKenzie!! Actually F diminished, your claim that a discussion in this forum can diminish the fRoots forum simply isn't true. Mudcat simply hasn't that level of influence and sway over the fRoots forum or vice versa. Despite there being a handful of cross-posters (far fewer, I'm guessing, than there are between Charlie Gillett's and the Beeb boards), the fRoots forum is very far off the radar of most people who are regulars here, with the exception of the Anglophile clique.

And besides, we've the Rt Hon John from Hull.

The vast majority of this thread has been people clowning around and taking the piss out of some egomaniacs who worship nothing more than their own opinions and their hyper-developed ability to put down, humiliate, and shame others. It always makes people squirm when you name names. Truth hurts, too. But we are all big people here. People who can't take criticism maybe shouldn't be so quick with the knife between the ribs, eh?

Yes, that includes Lizzie. Yes it was quite trollish of her to cross-post. Yes, this thread is a bit catty. So what?

But this thread also includes another major flame queen, Countess Richard. And over in the fRoots forum, it is clear that nothing that is being said here is having any influence whatsoever upon the thread where Mr. Anderson's question is being discussed.

The fRoots editor, I noticed yesterday (while perusing his and Charlie Gillett's forum), spends some considerable amount of his forum posting time at Charlie's board. In the fRoots thread being discussed here, the editor compared his board to Charlie's and found his wanting. Hence his starting of the thread. The responses to his query does indicate he has a problem on his board. That was apparently evident enough for even the editor to take notice of, so any claim that this Mudcat thread has destroyed the fRoots forum or besmirched any of it's inhabitants is ludicrous.

Does he truly want to know why Charlie has a better board than he does? Maybe. Can he handle the truth? I suppose those who give a shit one way or the other will just have to wait and see until he returns from Gloccamorra or whatever 'world' music capitals he is taking his holiday safaris in these days.

To be continued? Of course, 'tis the nature of the public chat forum beast.

Jon, I think you are looking at this thread through a fairly distorted lens.

First, any thread can pop to 180 here (and can't at the fRoots forum) because this is a much heavier traffic site. It doesn't have to be a flame thread (to wit: MOABS,Drumcree threads, etc). It really is that simple.

Second, this hasn't been much of a flame thread at all. It's been people dicking around on a hot summer slow news day.

IMO, this has been a gossip sort of thread. If it is a cross-forum flame war, it sure hasn't generated much heat. It has generated humor more than anything.

So what's the 'problem' with this thread? Well, I think you will have to invent one, because none seems to exist beyond a couple of Brits being chuffed that some of their own ain't coming off looking too good here in an American forum.

Now for something totally different. Breaking News from The Fark, as odd as this thread.

--New Zealand rugby team reduced to tears over Aussie ad depicting them carrying purses.

--Oil prices at record high due to... *shakes magic eight ball*... Korean missile tests.

--Indiana now offering lifetime handgun permits. In other news, Nugent, Heston, Cheney last seen racing down I-70.

And let this last one act as a cautionary tale to Countess Rottweiller:

--Man who got Jeep stuck at campsite, then pelted campers with rocks after they refused to help, pretty darn surprised when campers hit him in the face with an axe and break a rifle over his head.

Here is his Absolute Beginner's Guide To Usenet, from which you will learn that a ROTTWEILER is a large German dog (from Rott Village, natch). Among other items, you usually need three of these (sans muzzles) to see off trolls who imagined they were unidentifiable online. For some reason though, an anglo player (had to be one of those) has suggested that in my case, I don't actually need them. Pays to read the whole thread or you'll never get what's going on.

Oh sorry, should have realised you don't know how to click links yet:

Dick Gaughan wrote:

"The Golden Rule of Usenet is to remember at all times that the person on the other side of your monitor screen is a human being.

Do not say anything to anyone on a newsgroup that you would be afraid to say directly to their face if they were a 6'6 240lbs ex-professional heavyweight boxer carrying a baseball bat and accompanied by three unmuzzled Rottweilers and a posse of very short-tempered bikers. You never know, they might be - and they might live just round the corner from you. Get the idea? So be as courteous and polite as the circumstances call for.

Be aware that your anonymity is not quite as secure as you might think it is.

On Usenet you can run - but you can't hide. If you post to newsgroups, anyone with a bit of technical clue can normally discover your identity - and quite a lot about you - without too much difficulty. Many naive unsuspecting souls have amused themselves by being offensive and foul-mouthed on newsgroups, posting using a throwaway mail address on something like Hotmail, feeling secure in the knowledge that nobody could know their identity and so nobody could seek retribution - only to be completely dumbfounded and quite shocked when retribution knocked at their front door.

Also be aware that your words of wisdom are archived in several places and can be accessed and read by anyone at any time, even several years later. So do not post anything to a newsgroup you would not wish to see spraypainted on a wall in the main street of your home town. Any words posted to a newsgroup can come back to haunt you at any time."

Take them to heart. Just a suggestion.

And speaking of looking different: My French Canadian uncle (now dead) had an old hore he kept out in the country. Well, an American drove by and affered him $10,000 cash for it. My uncle replied, "No. I don' sell that horse. She don' look so good." The American replied, "Make it $20,000." My uncle said, "I can' do that. She don' look so good." The American offered $30,000 with the words, "This is my last bid." My uncle thought for a few minutes and said, "OK, but she don' look so good."

The American loaded the horse in his trailer and drove off. Next day my uncle received a phone call from him. He was furious. His words? "You sonuvabitch, the horse you sold me is blind." My uncle said, "That's what I said. That horse don' look so good!"

Right then...I've had a FAR happier evening than all of you it seems. John Tams was BRILLIANT!!

Just to refresh some memories though...this is my original message:

"Hi Guys!

I may tell you why his board (imo) is *so* quiet a bit later on! ;0)

Lizzie :0)"

After that it basically went downhill rapidly....er..Message 2, I believe, started it....BUT....it wasn't taken off thread or turned into a 'flame war' by me. I merely answered The Twits back. I am at liberty to do that.

I think message 5 mentioned 'trolls' and then it all went downhill from there. I'd take it up with the guys who *really* started it Maggie....and then....I suggest you go marry *them*.... ;0)

Right, I'm away to remember John Tams singing underneath the stars tonight.........World Music in Otterton. Excellent!

Hey Maggie! Gobble yourself up with jealousy over this then!

ENGLISH World Music!

THE DEMON BARBERS:

http://www.myspace.com/thedemonbarbers

You *can* talk about them on the fRoots board.....FANTASTIC!

Peace ... regarding the thread about your late French Canadian uncle's horse .... initially into the reading I thought it was about an old hore (trollop) he kept out in the country.

Any which you you read into it ... pretty good story!

As far as the crucial one about being as courteous and polite as the circumstances call for, yes I do apply it. As for the principle of actually reading and being aware of all aforegoing references (so obvious to all but those whose inital free month's AOL subscription has not yet elapsed that DG omits even mention it), the current string of anonymous, hooded gatecrashers really ought to speedread through the contextual relevance of Rottweilers, heavyweight boxers, short-tempered bikers and spraypainters, then engage brain before committing fingers to keyboard. If only to avoid making arses of themselves.

Said well Blowzabella. Get a life you people. Is fRoots so important that it needs this? Go over there and discuss it why don't you. Whoever Lizzie is, from reading most of the posts on here I come out with the idea that she's obviously upset some people. On looking at their behaviour and how they express themselves, I'd like to shake her hand sometime. Lizzie at least brings a smile. Concentrate on more important things this world has enough spite in it as it is.

Bill D said.

I made a mistake opening this...and am probably making another posting THIS.

*Smiles* What was that definition of madness you have posted (more than once)? Something about repeating the same actions and expecting different results...

For what it is worth - we are in total agreement for once. You did make a mistake and you are making another - and not for the first time. Or I suspect - the last.

This does sum up much of the pompous territorial hypocrisy that is so sadly well demonstrated in this thread. Perhaps it can finally be accepted that If such a thread as this or any other was not in order on our forum - it would have died long ago and not reached as many posts as these threads do.

If these threads are only popular by the virtue of so many just posting their judgement of it and individual posters - it follows that their problem (if it is one) can be easily solved by them just ignoring it and not repeating - what they consider is the mistake of posting to it...........

It remains a music related thread and should be moved back to where the originator placed it. Any conversations about moving it should be only with the thread's orginator and any other poster told to mind their own business and no form of editing action taken withour first privately contacting the thread's originator.

It's still not a thread about music even though music is mentioned. It was a thread about another forum (which should be discussed on that forum) but now I see it's going to be another censorship thread.

Piffle.

This thread was as music related, if not more so, than many threads which remain on the music related section.

And it became 'another censorship thread' the moment the first post appeared passing judgement and demanding that some form of editing action be imposed upon it. And certainly from the moment that imposed editing action was taken to relgate it to the BS section as a response to these usual posters sticking their noses in to matters that do not concern them and feeling they have some right to post only to call others names. If censorship is thought to be such a good idea - perhaps these are the posts (from the usual suspects) which should be censored?

If any thread is not to your taste - then ignore it and let it die. Please don't encourage the idea that some posters have the right to deny other posters of their right to decide for themselves where their threads are posted and whether they wish to post or not.
