But their works live on. Aged about 12 I could have sung this one for you, 40 years later there are bits I don't recognise at all. Odd, that, as I have found that I can remember other songs from that time better than more recent material. I wonder what went wrong this time. As you say, a fun song; witty chap, that WSG. |

Has anyone seen the brilliant film "Topsy Turvy" about the creation of this particular operetta? Fictionalized to within an inch of its life, I'm sure, but a great, fun movie. (It's best suited to theatre geeks, though...filmgoers more used to Hollywood pacing will wonder, "Why are we spending ten minutes watching the actors fumble their lines at rehearsal?") The best thing about it is that they found actors who were both brilliant in their roles and could SING THEIR OWN PARTS!!! Shirley Henderson's rendition of "The Sun Whose Rays Are All Ablaze" stuck firmly in my head for weeks. And the casting of Gilbert and Sullivan themselves, as well as their respective inamoratae (is that how you pluralize that word?) was just perfect. Seeing Jim Broadbent as the sleazy promoter in "Little Voice" and then seeing him as the ultra-prim and proper, melancholy Gilbert made me realize just what a brilliant actor he is. OK, I'll stop rhapsodizing now. But see the film! Molly |

I picked up a complete score of The Mikado and The Pirates of Penzance at an AAUW booksale in Brattleboro, VT, while I was back east last month, and am hoping to put the former into Esperanto. (I believe it's been done before, but I can't locate the results.) I've translated portions of Iolanthe and HMS Pinafore in times past. I have at my feet as I type an Esperanto Penzance with two quite distinct versions of "Modern Major General", neither quite satisfactory. I also use their tunes, e.g. in my "comic oratorio" on Jonah, where one of the songs ("Just Kill Me") is to "Tit-Willow". Haruo |
