Help! Need lyrics to this song. Think I know most, but not sure enough to perform it (even at a party!). Thanks so much in advance.

Henrietta's Wedding (Marais & Miranda)

We've been invited to Henrietta's wedding,
But she won't tell us when it will be. (We can see)
We hear the tears her mother is shedding
Are because of the old ladies tea.

When will it be, when will it be, when will it be, when will it be,
When will it be, when will it be, when will it be, when will it be?

We've been invited to Henrietta's wedding,
Though she can't tell us when it will be.

Though we're invited to Henrietta's wedding,
No one knows who her husband will be. (Who can it be?)
She says she's started to buy all the bedding,
But the husband's a deep mystery.

Who can it be, who can it be, who can it be, who can it be,
Who can it be, who can it be, who can it be, who can it be?

Though we're invited to Henrietta's wedding,
No one knows who her husband will be.

We've been invited to Henrietta's wedding,
And we want to know what there will be. (What'll there be)
From all the news that we hear has been spreading,
There'll be something besides cake and tea.

What will there be, what will there be, what will there be, what will there be,
What will there be, what will there be, what will there be, what will there be?

We've been invited to Henrietta's wedding,
And we want to know what there will be.
(What can it be, what can it be, what can it be?)

We've been invited to Henrietta's wedding,
And we want to know where it will be.
We wonder which way to go to the wedding,
And between you and me, so does she.

Where will it be, where will it be, where will it be, where will it be,
Where will it be, where will it be, where will it be, where will it be?

We wonder which way to go to the wedding, (Ho, ho)
And between you and me, so does she.

This is transcribed from an old scratchy record, so I hope it's okay.

Good try, Stewart, only a few mis-heard words. Here it is- (I cheated and copied the words from the book).

HENRIETTA'S WEDDING^^
(Marais and Miranda version)
Copyright 1940, Marais and Diggenhof

We've been invited to Henrietta's wedding,
Though she can't tell us when it will be.
We hear, the tears that her mother is shedding,
Are because of the old lady's glee.
When will it be?

When will it be, when will it be? (2x)
We've been invited to Henrietta's wedding
Though she can't tell us when it will be.

We've been invited to Henrietta's wedding,
No one knows who her husband will be.
They say she's started to buy all of the bedding,
But the husband's a deep mystery.
Who can it be?

Who can it be, who can it be? (2x)
Though we're invited to Henrietta's wedding
No one knows who her husband will be.

We've been invited to Henrietta's wedding,
And we want to know where it will be.
We wonder which way to go to the wedding
And, between you and me, so does she.
Where will it be?

We wonder which way to go to the wedding,
And between you and me, so does she.

From sheet music in Marais & Miranda, 1960, "Folk Song Jamboree, pp. 15-19, Ballantine Books.

Marais says, "There used to be a Zulu tune of about 8 bars about the coming celebration of Henrietta's wedding- an event that always remained in the future. My theory is that some man at some time told his wife he had spent his money on a present for Henriettta's wedding, and, when this proved to be a myth, he became the laughing stock of the town... then the country... and quite logically, a folk ditty ensued. Upon that fragmant, this published song is based."

Q and Stewart-

Thanks for nailing this old favorite down and for the additional notes. My brother and I also had one of those scratchy 78's back in the 1940's. I'm sure we added our share of scratches to it.

Cheerily,

Thank Joe Offer, too. I just remembered that he sent me the book when he was cleaning out some time ago.

I looked at "Ons Blêrkas," the extensive Afrikaans folkmusic website, but didn't find anything similar (might not know if I did, since I can't read Afrikaans).

I added a MIDI to Q's post. Does it sound right?

Sounds okay to me along with my scratchy record (but where are the scratches?). Thanks Joe.

I remember the beginning from an album we had (we're talking late '40s here), Songs of the South African Veldt, I believe Marias and Miranda

Oh we are going to Henrietta's wedding
But she can't tell us when it will be
And from the tears that her mother is shedding
There'll be something besides cake and tea.

What will it be, what will it be, what will it be?

I've done my own transcription based on the song as I heard it on Spotify:

HENRIETTA'S WEDDING
As recorded by Marais & Miranda on "Joseph Marais & Miranda Revisit the South African Veld with the Bushveld Band" (2013)

1. We've been invited to Henrietta's wedding,
Though she can't tell us when it will be. (Wait and see.)
We hear the tears that her mother is shedding
Are because of the old lady's glee.
When will it be? (When will it be? When will it be? When will it be?)
When will it be? (When will it be? When will it be? When will it be?)
We've been invited to Henrietta's wedding,
Though she can't tell us when it will be.

2. Though we're invited to Henrietta's wedding,
No one knows who her husband will be. (Who can it be?)
They say she's started to buy all the bedding,
But the husband's a deep mystery.
Who can it be? (Who can it be? Who can it be? Who can it be?)
Who can it be? (Who can it be? Who can it be? Who can it be?)
Though we're invited to Henrietta's wedding,
No one knows who her husband will be.

3. We've been invited to Henrietta's wedding,
And we want to know what there will be. (What'll there be?)
From all the news that we hear has been spreading
There'll be something besides cake and tea.
What will there be? (What will there be? What will there be? What will there be?)
What will there be? (What will there be? What will there be? What will there be?)
We've been invited to Henrietta's wedding,
And we want to know what there will be.
(What can it be? What can it be? What can it be?)

4. We've been invited to Henrietta's wedding,
And we want to know where it will be.
We wonder which way to go to the wedding
And, between you and me, so does she.
Where will it be? (Where will it be? Where will it be? Where will it be?)
Where will it be? (Where will it be? Where will it be? Where will it be?)
We wonder which way to go to the wedding,
And between you and me, so does she.
