24 Aug 06 - 09:47 AM (#1817803) Subject: RE: BS: Moo! I say, Moo old chap - cow accents From: Bee-dubya-ell Well, yes, southern US cows do moo with a drawl. But let's not confuse cause and effect here. It's not the cows who have picked up mannerisms from the owners, but the owners who have learned to imitate their livestock. For instance, consider the distinctly southern trait of attempting to carry on a conversation while simultaneously chewing a huge plug of Levi Garrett chewing tobacco. Any thinking person would realize that the two activities are mutually exclusive. But, hey, cows can chew their cuds and moo at the same time so Bubba should be able to chaw and tell ya about that cutie he met down at the roadhouse last night. |

I say, Moo old chap - cow accents From: Ebbie Back to the claim - It should be able to test the hypothesis by bringing in 'foreign' cows to the herd and observing whether they understand each other. If I purchase a five-year-old dog from Spain and it is shipped to me in Alaska, will it be able to understand my commands? Will I be able to understand its responses? |
24 Aug 06 - 12:27 PM (#1817964) Subject: RE: BS: Moo! I say, Moo old chap - cow accents From: Rapparee Well, Ebbie, the police and other security outfits train their K9 partners to respond to commands in a language other than English -- German, for instance. The dogs don't care as long as it's consistent. |

I recall that the page a day kitty calendar once mentioned how kitties in Japan have more (& different) vowels than USA kitties, & other stuff about how kitty language differs from place to place. The interesting part is how critters from different countries have a bit trouble understand each other. Seems like I heard on a tv show the other day that whales, dolphins, & other big fishies have differing dialects from one pod to another. |

25 Aug 06 - 08:50 AM (#1818630) Subject: RE: BS: Moo! I say, Moo old chap - cow accents From: Dave'sWife I knew you all wouldn't let me down! I posted this and then ran for cover! **Warning - Those of you without dogs may wish to skip this post. This kind of dog talk bores some mudcatters.** Speaking of dogs and accents - my Alsatian went to sleepover dog school for a month when he was 5 months old because he was just nuts. He wouldn't let you near him with a leash having had an early traumatic experience with the loop pole and the dog catcher before we rescued him. Now, the guy running the kennel, Gunther and his younger assistant, Omar are from Austria. They use english commands but with thick accents. To this day, about 6 and half years later, if we want Puppers to settle down and lay down, we have to say "down" with an Austrian accent or he tilts his head in confusion and looks at us as if to say: "What mean you silly peoples? Surely you are not asking me to lay down? Perhaps you are suggesting I stand here and bark at you some more? Yes, that must be it. Woof. Woof I say." When we invoke the Guntherian accent, in an instant he lays down and stays down. The funnier part is he remembers Gunther with affection and will run to the door to look for him when we say his name but remembers Omar as the guy he got sent to when he was a Bee Ay DEE dog for too long. When he's being very Bee-Ay-Dee all we have to do is say 'Omar" in a long and drown out way and he is suddenly the best behaved dog in town. Omar never hit him or was mean to him, he was just all business and wouldn't play with him after obedience training was over. He believed a trainer should not be anything but a trainer and only praised for tasks performed properly. Gunther was very jolly and the kind of trainer who scratches bellies and pats heads. When Puppers needs reigning in he goes to Omar for an afternoon of refresher training. When he needs to be boarded, he gets to play with Gunther. Somehow it all works. Of course, if we didn't let dog get away with so much, he'd not need refresher courses. We haven't quite learned that dogs aren't children and as a result, Puppers tests us from time to time. We have let him get away with so much because of his recent manifestation of epilepsy ( a year ago). Now that he is virtually seizure-free, we have to start mentioning Omar more often or, gasp, send him back to Omar for a day. A happy dog is not a dog who is running the house but one who knows what is expected of him. Those of you without dogs may wish to skip this post |

Every entry in this entertaining yet completely usable book features an illustration that highlights each breed's most easily identifiable traits, such as coloration pattern and body shape. The book includes a checklist of breeds so the die-hard cow watcher can keep track of sightings, a list of essential garb and gear for cow watching, a glossary of terms, a listing of breeder associations, and more. Fascinating cow trivia is interspersed throughout. Informative, amazing, and amusing, A Field Guide to Cows is the indispensable companion for would-be cow tippers, farmers, city folk, agriculturalists, interstate drivers, 4-H'ers, vacationing families, and everyone who likes to moo at cows."
